FYI for those who don't understand: *THIS* is point-to-point wiring. Jack's wired direct to tube sockets with caps and resistors, etc... No pcb board anywhere. I bet you had fun with this! 😲

This has slowly become one of my favorite channels. I found it initially from the super expansive pickup tests and those were incredible so I figured I'd stick around. Glad I did. 👊👍 Great job on this one!

I rebuilt the same amp a couple years ago. I removed every component and all the wrapped lead ends from sockets etc., cleaned it up and and put in all new components. Client still very happy and it sounds great.

I could have sworn that these had a double sided eyelet board in them. The '59/60 tweed GA40 I worked on definitely had a double sided eyelet board with a ton of bumblebee/black beauties underneath it. Huge PITA to work on.
@YeatzeeGuitar
@YeatzeeGuitar 5 месяцев назад
Yep, the versions after this first version had that. 1952-54 were like this.

@@YeatzeeGuitar I love the sound of the tweed GA40’s, but man, they aren’t easy to work on. I’d say you chose the easiest model to work on and it still sounds great. Probably wouldn’t hurt to have a look at the speaker. Hopefully it’s been reconed so you can actually use it live. I wouldn’t trust an original cone for a live performance.
@YeatzeeGuitar

Yeah it's honestly way outgunned for any live use with the band I'm in, my AC30 can be borderline. BUT it's killer at home and I bet it'd record great as well. Do you know how many watts? I can't imagine it's more than a Princeton.

Congrats man! I know what it’s like to just want to enjoy the amp. As you know I have that new to me Super, but man I’m terrified to run it since everything is original and we saw those leaky caps.
@YeatzeeGuitar
@YeatzeeGuitar 5 месяцев назад
Yeah that's one of those cases it's definitely best to not run it. This one's been gone through so I bought it hoping I could enjoy it right off the rip. Unfortunately not quite, but it's solid now! I'll be in touch later today BTW.

AC cord wired incorrectly (neutral wire to fuse holder); a red and striped-white wire insulated with tape (and looking scorched at the other end); a broken off wire flapping in the breeze; an input jack connection with absolutely no solder on it: and a chunk of component lead sitting loose inside the chassis below that microphone input ( probably stuck there with a minute amount of rosin). So much for the work ethic of the previous tech.....😖

Nice job! With how many hands have been in there, it might be a good candidate to partially disassemble & rebuild. Gibson amps are not as cleanly built as Fender's. Particularly the 50's models. Tube sockets can look a little haphazard. Also, it's a little strange to have stuffed caps alongside a bunch of modern poly coupling caps. Personally I'd just yank all that & put it back together. I get why people stuff caps but if you're going to do it leave some type of a note stating what the make & value of the caps are & when the work was done. At this point it's just unnecessary & it would make the amp more easily serviceable in the long term by throwing them out. Those poly caps are good quality & the old brown turds are likely fine as well. Just grab some wire sleeves & go to town. You may want to make some notes of how things are currently laid out in there. Gibson amps can be very different from their schematics.

Yeah it's going to be a pretty major project to get everything to where I feel really about it, tight spaces and a lot of wire overlaps! BUT for once I'd like to enjoy a new amp a bit before ripping it apart 😆

@@YeatzeeGuitar Oh yeah absolutely no need to tackle it right away. I'd put that on the backburner list because the end result will likely not change the sound much if at all from where it's at right now. Sounds great!

IF possible, rotate the speaker so that the diamond shape becomes square. Then the tube could avoid the diamond POINT and have more space to manuver in & out of its socket. ??? LOL

Hey, just found the channel and was watching your fender blackface rebuild videos. Not sure how to get ahold of you but have you figured out how to do the solder dome yet? I just finished rebuilding a 66 Pro Reverb and a 69 Bassman and it's pretty easy. The trick is to fill the eyelet holes just like you are doing and let them cool. Then come right back with the iron and solder and quickly melt a new blob on top of the already completed solder. You add this new blob very quickly and don't melt the original solder too much if at all. The blob is only for looks and if you do it quickly like this the original solder is the actual connection. Hope that helps
@MichaelSmith-rn1qw
@MichaelSmith-rn1qw 5 месяцев назад
On the old Fenders, weren't the domes created by soldering from the underside of the eyelet board before it was installed in the chassis?
@dyamariv3628
@dyamariv3628 5 месяцев назад
@@MichaelSmith-rn1qw Interesting!, never heard that theory but it definitely makes sense! I did notice when I overfilled the eyelet holes and looked underneath there was a nice dome lol

It's already done a 3hr rehearsal. I gig vintage amps all the time, this one is underpowered for our band so it's more a home amp 🙂
