It so amazing to see how k-dramas are slowly changing into more than just toxic romance. Dramas like D.P. and It’s Okay to Not be Okay are taking on real challenges and issues and I’m excited to see more.

I don’t think the D.P is the problem. Either way they still gonna have someone to catch those deserters. The problem is what they do to the deserters after they catch them & what made the deserters want to run away from their post. Is it from bullying, unnecessary torture, mental health issues etc. South Korea need to find measures to reduce the numbers of deserters.

Why not abolish mandatory enlistment like most developed countries have? Korea is a first world country yet one of the few that still have mandatory enlistment. Europe, America and Canada don’t have mandatory enlistment with the exception of a few EU countries and even in Asia, China, Taiwan, Japan don’t have a mandatory military service. Korea should modernize in this aspect too.

Korea has serious bullying culture due to unnecessary importance given to hierarchy. People should be respected equally regardless of age or rank. Even in kpop this used to be very evident between the members of the group. The young ones were expected to do the chores for the older ones and that’s BS. I know the newer generation of kpop is better now from what i see. The male members dont make it strict for the younger ones to call them ‘hyung’ . And they still can respect each other.
@if8172

'Hyung' or 'Oppa' is like 'Mum' or 'Dad'. They aren't voluntary nicknames anyone can use just whenever they feel like it. Will calling your parents directly by their name change the dynamics between you and them in anyway? If so, then we live in different worlds and I have nothing more to say but my understanding is that the problem lies within the attitude and perception of age differences in Korea, not mere titles or cultural norms. I've known many mature Koreans that would treat everyone equally regardless of their age and how they address him or her.
@mehr430
@mehr430 2 года назад
@@if8172 why not voluntary? If between biological familial relationships I’d understand. But between friends who are just a year apart and to demand that, i feel like that’s kinda messed up. DP has just proven how this entitlement can escalate. But then again, it’s wrong of me to just pin Korea at the center of this. Bullying happens in every corner of the world and bullies exist because the people around them allow them to. We feel the need to fight for our rights but we treat other humans like trash.
@if8172
@if8172 2 года назад
It's called a difference in culture and if you can't abide by it you're simply not respecting it and it just doesn't work like that. You don't see Koreans going to America or whatnot and demanding Americans should be eating burgers with chopsticks. That's just pure narcissism. When in Rome mate.
@if8172
@if8172 2 года назад
I don't know how you managed to end up correlating a show about military insubordination with Korean social customs but DP aspects result from rotten military traditions that somehow managed to uphold it's way even up until now which undoubtedly needs to be fixed. How Koreans address each other is simply a customary way of showing respect towards your elders, nothing less and nothing more. I've known 'hyung's I've treated exactly like my same aged friend and vice versa. If they end up bullying someone, it's on their personality and character, not a tradition as those type of people exist universally regardless of culture.

Just hearing from this video it makes me really upset. I’m a US Army soldier and I joined to serve and protect our country. That was my choice. Inside military bullying is not tolerated and THATS not who we are, we trained together as brothers, we have this saying YOU WATCH MY BACK AND I WATCH YOUR BACK, it all brotherhood. Trainers they trained you to be tough to fight the enemy not to freaking bully your brothers. Military is my second family so why bully your family. Seniors helps the new recruits to go through their training to be a fighting soldiers. That’s why every US military show pride, respect, and honor to their uniform. Their are some deserters too, that’s showing respect and helping each other become Army strong. Bullying is just a very disrespectful and very hateful way of showing to this new recruits and I’m sure they don’t to be part of this military organization. Over here in America you bully someone your done and your out. SHOW YOUR TOUGHT ON YOUR ENEMIES NOT TO YOUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN THE MILITARY FAMILY. SHOW THEM RESPECT AS YOUR BROTHERS, AS YOUR MOTHER LAND NEEDS THEM TO PROTECT THEIR FREEDOM. WHAT A SHAME THAT I THOUGHT SOUTH KOREA IS VERY WELL PROGRESSED COUNTRY, SPECIALLY AFTER KOREAN WAR. DONT BULLY YOUR BROTHERS OR SISTERS IN THE MILITARY, STAND STRONG AS ONE.. EMBRACED EACH OTHER, BECAUSE YOU ARE ALL THE PROTECTOR OF YOUR MOTHER LAND. REMEMBER WHAT THE ALLIES DID TO YOUR COUNTRY, THEY DIED AND FACE YOUR ENEMIES FOR YOUR FREEDOM. IF YOUR A BULLY ONE YOU THINK YOUR BAD ASS, GUESS WHAT YOUR NOT, YOU ARE A COWARD, BECAUSE YOU ONLY BULLY THE WEAKEST. STOP THAT WAY TREATING YOUR BROTHERS, BELIEVE ME THEY WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE SOMEDAY. STAY STRONG AS ONE.
@eden_v3133
@eden_v3133 2 года назад
I agree with you that it would be nicer to get rid of it but in their case, modernization has nothing to do with it. Because even now, in "modern" days, the political situation in south korea is very different to the one in all those other countries. They're balancing a very fickle peace with the north and for that reason they don't dare getting rid of the mandatory service yet. Even if it doesn't seem acute, they can't rule out the possibility of another conflict and then the fact that almost every man above the age of 20 has gone through military training can make a huge difference for them. I'm very anti military but I don't think south koreas situation is really comparable in that aspect

Physical assault, accident, and other injuries that a D.P. or any military suffering is worst than beating up any potential colonials or terrorist. Its a mental illness of the military culture started way back from ancient times. Military should protect the citizens and fellow military not hurt, kill or push them to death. Time and effort should be spend about defending one own's country. Military pride and dignity have become the same face of an abuser, terrorist and criminal when inflicting pain and death over D.P. There are a million tasks to accomplish in defending one's country against colonials or terrorist. Why spend time to assault or kill fellow military soldier, unless a criminal soldier? The case of South Korea, as with Israel, is actually pretty special as they are both currently engaged in real-time conflict in their borders (Israel with Palestine, and SK with NK), so the condition is at any given time war could happen and the more able-bodied people able to defend the country the better. Nowadays, most of us don't live with war looming in our horizons, but usually when war breaks, there is the need for more military personnel than what is available and you'd have to conscript from civilians - But civilian conscription takes time and a LOT of training, something you can't afford in a state of war. Hence, SK training as many men as they could just in case the unthinkable happens!

Not only do they have american’s there why not expand the Korean career military? I’m sure a lot of young people who can’t find jobs or don’t have money to marry and start a family would love a system similar to US career military. Housing and other parents. Or they could just take out Kim.. ?
@13dg
@13dg 2 года назад
Pretty sure the numbers would be quite low for their situation, specially since you are comparing 2 countries with a huge difference in population. Both Koreas are not in a friendly situation obviously, so being at risk of a war breaking out in their border makes it necessary for them to do this mandatory service. Is not just about having active personnel ready, but also people in reserve with some kind of training, just in case it is necessary. The "just take Kim out" its quite a naive statement. If it was that easy it would've been done already.
@kristinesharp6286
@kristinesharp6286 2 года назад
@@13dg the conflict was unpopular so it ended with a ceasefire. We will be very ashamed we waited so long to stop the suffering there. But whatever. Only 1% of the population is currently serving the US. But they are career soldiers however most leave around 40. They manage to have spouses and kids all while serving. Housing is provided and everyone is able to eat. Veterans very sought out after for employment in the private sector and many work a job after they are retired or discharged for those not signing up again for another 6-8-10 years. Many who leave at 40 work another 20 years doing something else. Perhaps after getting a certificate or degree. Yet for some reason we have surplus people to send everywhere with just 1% serving. We do have selective service you have to sign up for when 18, males can be drafted. There is talk of extending that to females as well. Last time was needed was 50 years ago. Since they know they can draft 200K a year they don’t have to treat their soldier’s decent in Korea. If they did they would have 60K a year deciding on military and staying in for several years or decades. They would have skilled and young people all in one. Soon there will only be 100K entering a year.

In states of peace why you need to reserve soo much military while there is no war. Its is such a waste of government fund while there is more developement and infrastructur can be build. Infact most fulltime soldiers are just wasting their times and money on eating and other leisures budget. Its required lot of funds to raise permanent armies and just sitting there to standby for war breakout. There are more wasting of money and food supplies if you keep many soldiers in base camp without doing proper jobs and anything necessaries. Infact they trained the citizen just to be prepared to defend the country in case war breakout any time, but im sure the militaries already have many strong elites armies thats was trained specially as task force. So after training they still can live as normal citizen with basic militaries knowledge incase of emergency. And its most cost effective because when you need to raise soldiers in sudden war breakout, the citizen already prepared to jump in the battle and the government dont need just to relies on help from other countries militaries force. Its mean the citizen have the basic to save their own life and their familiy.

@Tralala_Beez 1. South Korea has actually around twice the population of North Korea and is the 27th most populous country so that's definitely not small. I wonder why men might be disinterested in joining the military, maybe because the military is a highly abusive and gruesome institution? Meaning, the problem is not with the men but with the military. If they want people to join on their own free will (which they should) they'll have to improve the institution. Furthermore, they also don't need a lot of manpower (more in point 4). 2. Regardless of whether the US would side with South Korea or not (which is highly likely for the foreseeable future). It's almost guaranteed that nobody would side with North Korea. North Korea is an isolationist country with no real allies. South Korea is a globalized economy which means that they have established economic co-dependencies with almost all other globally relevant nations. Typically, counties will not side or go to war with other countries that they have diplomatic bounds or economic ties with or that are important trading partners. That's also why the the best means of peace keeping and avoiding war are diplomacy and trade - not militaries... that's a child's way of seeing the world. 3. South and North Korea might de jure still be at war but de facto they really aren't. You're making it seem as if North Korea is just seething at the mouth, waiting to burst into South Korea, but they really are not. There's no evidence for that. Infact, recent development has generally been quite positive between the two. Even if they attacked though... by means of having vastly more resources, much better technology and strong international ties both economically and diplomatic South Korea and it's allies would win that war without the need of millions of conscripted soldiers. 4. I hope one day you also realize that we aren't in the 19th century anymore and arrive in reality: Today's wars aren't fought with guns and soldiers, not in the slightest. You could have a every single Korean man knowing how to use a gun and they all could be taken out by a few drone pilots. Today's wars aren't decided by who has more soldiers, they're decided by who has better diplomatic status, more resources and better technology. The amount of soldiers or whether or not the average Korean man can use a weapon is completely irrelevant in modern times. Your understanding of these topics is that of a toddler. In conclusion: Mandatory service is probably not necessary at all and it would do a great good to abolish it (see for example suicide numbers talked about in this video).
