D.U.I. Fatality Survivor interview-Peter 

My Mother passed away at age 54. I’ll never forget what my 81 year old Grandfather said when she died. He said he had lost his parents, his wife, siblings and friends. But none of those hurt him nearly as bad as loosing his daughter, my Mom.

Hearing stories like this really opens your eyes. You never know your last moments with someone. Especially your kids. Don’t take them for granted. Don’t take life for granted.

The media portraying you as drunk when a car flew into you and killed your son is horrible

I haven’t been the best dad and watching has really touched me . I will try and be a better dad after watching this . God bless this man .

The coma dreams he’s talking about are not the same as regular dreams and almost impossible to describe to someone that hasn’t experienced them. I have a TBI from a car wreck that killed a friend of mine. Every dream I had in the coma my friend was there. When I came too I didn’t believe my mom telling me he was dead because those dreams were so real. I relived the three days before the wreck in those dreams but everything was perfect. In the dreams there was a car wreck but nobody was hurt. It almost seems like our brain tries to protect us from the trauma by creating a different memory.

Man, Your experience,strength and endurance have touched me deeply. I have bone marrow cancer and you frustration with the whole punitive treatment when you need pain medication is insane. My heart breaks for you, Peter.💔 I lost my adult son three years ago. It was a one vehicle rollover. They kept him alive for two days. I had to make the call. It destroyed what I called my life. No, you are NEVER okay again. I totally get what you said about friends. The person I considered to be my best friend, since third grade, totally abandoned me. Another blow. Yes, people disappear. Put your arm and heart around that person and tell them you're so sorry and you love them! That's all you have to do! I hope you can get help with your physical pain. You are not alone. 🙏

I understand being a chronic pain patient & how you are essentially judged by others who just don’t understand how you would do anything to not be in the position you’re in..especially by healthcare professionals that are supposed to be there to help you. The pharmacists are the absolute worst about publicly shaming you. It took me years of being in horrific pain before I found the right pain management Dr..they’re out there.. keep looking.

His matter of fact attitude is admirable and the fact that he doesn’t sugar coat shit is refreshing. It also makes me not take every second w people who are in our lives for granted. I also have someone close to me who went through something traumatic and I distanced myself for fear of being faced with not knowing what to say or how to say it. I remember this. Julian was such a beautiful boy, and his pictures just show him shining from within. Peter, you are a remarkable human being to just be able to breathe, much less to go on with your life with such strength and grace. I'm over here in Tehachapi, so I know what you are saying about the isolation, and how it feels to go back "down the hill." One minute at a time, my friend. Love to you.

I was nearly killed by a drunk driver. His defense tried to portray me as also driving drunk. I was on my way to work as a nurse, there was no way I was drunk. I’m not a drinker when I’m not going to work, I darn sure wasn’t drinking on my way in. I was dragged through the mud by these people that were defending a 23 yr old who had 4 drunk driving incidents in less than two years, who had no drivers license and no insurance. It was hell. I lost my home, my vehicle, my career, and my memory. I’m brain injured, have constant pain and horrific nerve damage. I will never be the same. Unlike this man in the story, I have not forgiven the kid that almost killed me. Forgiveness is not mandatory, it’s something someone earns by their behaviors. The guy who hit me is not sorry, he’s just sorry he got caught. He is owed not one ounce of forgiveness.

I went to jail for drunk drinking and hitting another car years ago, and the misery of that experience and the embarrassment will never leave me.

Most emotional one of Mark's videos I've seen. I can't imagine his pain. And the medical system in the late 90s gave everyone opiates which was wrong but the situation is worse now . People suffer in pain that should have relief, and guilt free relief.

Gosh, I feel so badly for this guy, he seems like such a great guy. Incant begin to imagine what he’s been through. As a nurse, the pain relief issues infuriates me. I hate that people he was close to have abandoned him after he suffered such a loss and hardship, I’m glad he and his wife could find a way to stay together for each other. Amazing man, a big heart that had room for forgiveness. I lost a daughter at 7 years old from a rare fatal disease. It does get easier, or we adjust to our new normal. I just wrote a book about my journey. I think my daughter is proud that i did it event hough it took 18 years to write. I didn't give up. I love that you aren't selfish and you still show up for people.

Thank you for sharing your story. This was hard to hear but there's something deep & teachable in your story. The friends & family who are staying away from you are probably scared they won't know how to support you after something so traumatic. That's sad that they feel like they can't reach out.

I had a stillbirth when I was six months pregnant. I will never get over losing her. I can’t imagine losing a six year old and also coping with serious chronic physical pain and mental issues. I knew someone who hit a toddler while driving drunk, and he killed the kid. After he got out of prison, he killed himself. It destroyed him. It destroyed the childs family. His suicide destroyed his family. A few weeks ago, my brother and his family drove by an accident. My 12 year old niece saw a bloody body crushed under a flipped car, dead. The driver was under the influence. Please, for the love of God, dont drive under the influence. The ripple effect of these things is atronomical. The destruction is unfathomable.

To me this was your best interview yet. I was so touched by Peter. His humanity, good intentions and how articulate he is explaining the situation. He spoke so many truths. I would be absolutely honored to have him as a friend.

Hearing from someone who lost a family member and hearing what they need and want from their friends is so helpful. It's hard to know what to say and what to do for people that go through something so tragic. I have been on the receiving end myself but hearing it from him is even better. One of my friends recently lost her husband in a car accident and they have four young kids. It's been difficult to know how to be there for her in the right ways. But the right thing is definitely not to disappear. That much is certain.

I too lost my son. You said it, only people who have lost a child truly understand. I am so sorry you had to go thru this. Also, the pain med situation is not fair to the people that have pain. I lost my son and my husband and got kicked out of the home we rented for 18 years not even a year later because they wanted to sell. I've been basically homeless with my step daughter ever since. They died in 2020 3 months apart but I'm still here.

I was driving my semi truck and this hit me hard, i started tearing up. I can’t imagine the pain of losing my 6 year old daughter. I hope this man finds the strength to keep going. He has a beautiful heart despite everything. God bless you and your family Peter😢

so sorry for your loss. We lost our son to cancer 6 years ago, and still to this day it hurts, and although your lives are forever changed, you learn to find your coping mechanisms to get through a day at a time. I feel his pain in every word. I hope one day, you will be able to see some light in your lives again, although it may be a different light to the one you had before, but it is there. I totally agree with you that each day that passes is another day closer to when you will see your son again one day. I often think this to myself. I have a wonderful medium who is able to connect with my son and it is so comforting to "hear" from him at least 3 times a year. I also find that writing a page of my day's happenings to my son each night is also a comfort -it is like I am chatting to him (albeit a bit one sided :-)) Hang in there, thinking of you. So sorry again for your loss.

As a person who has also lost a child, You are going to have to find a way to forgive Yourself and concentrate on the Present. I had to think more about making the remainder of my life better rather than worry about what Could happen. I too lost ALL of the so called friends who said if there is anything you need call me. Oh Peter, I am so sorry for the loss of your son. I have two sons and there would be nothing in my world that would devastate me more than losing one of my children. Please know that everyone is thinking of you and praying that you heal from this or attempt to at least you’ll never be the same, but hopefully you can carry on, and have some kind of normal life. Rest in peace, little boy.!!! I must say you are very understanding probably more understanding than many other people that would just go off, but that won’t do you any good you need to stay healthy and well for the rest of your family. I sure would like to just give you a hug. Sometimes a hug helps not gonna take it away. Sometimes it just helps to know that somebody cares about you.

I am truly sorry dear. I did a workshop years ago around energy balancing. It made so much sense. So take for instance, when you win a lottery, your energy will always try to balance to neutral and maybe counterbalance with a negative (like a pendulum) and vice versa. I lost my baby before she even took her first breath, she would have been 31. That pain still sits in a corner of my heart. I have a grandson today who is just a year now. I just cannot imagine losing him. I sat and listened to your interview today and heard you, every word. Your compassion and kindness are remarkable traits considering all of the pain you have and are going through. Your loved ones are blessed to have you. thank you for talking about living with chronic pain. Many ppl don't understand the torture one lives with. They don't understand why the depression strikes, as if you're supposed to just get over it. Thanks also for pointing out how the pain triggers memories of life's most painful moments. Sat down thinking I'd watch the first 10 mins but was completely enthralled. Peter forgiving that man in court is truly incredible. To show compassion like that in that circumstance to someone who has no one in their corner, wow. I think the world is a better place with people like him in it.

Hi Peter. I lost my son to a single car wreck in 2014 . He was 22 (No drugs or alcohol involved). My wife left me within 2 years... I'm at peace with my sons passing and my wife leaving now. At the time I didn't see it coming but it can happen like you said in these circumstances (95%). Just keep your head held high and keep moving forward. Worked for me. I'm in the best place I've been in 20 yrs.

I am also a fatal car accident survivor and I relate so heavily to the part in your healing where it feels like everyone abandons you. “Well I didn’t know what I would say.” You don’t have to say anything JUST BE THERE.

I’ve watched probably two hundred of your interviews and this one tore me up the most. Maybe it’s because I have a 7yo son but I physically feel sick and just wanted to keep weeping for this guy the entire time. He’s such an A+ human and he hasn’t let it make him a monster which is miraculous.. no one deserves that kind of unbearable pain but especially a guy like this. My heart just hurts. I pray this video saves many lives in his son’s honor.

Peter, you are full of such grace. You are a beautiful human and I hate that you have experienced what I imagine is the absolutely most painful loss. I watched my parents become old overnight when my little brother suicided in 2000. They never recovered.

Survivor's guilt is 100% real. It takes about 5 years for a traumatic brain injury to heal. I'm a disabled former emergency nurse. I've had chronic pain for 37 years. I have 2 herniated discs in my spine (neck). They fused naturally so no surgery is indicated. my mom’s aunt lost her 2 daughters, her only children, after a drunk driver hit them. they weren’t even teenagers yet. seeing how that affects someone firsthand changes you. there’s no words except i am so so so sorry for your loss.

I’m at a loss for words…. I’m so glad Peter reached out to you, Mark. I hadn’t seen this when it was first posted but saw his video where he supported you wholeheartedly over the whole Whitaker/Tyler drama. I’m truly in awe of this man’s courage and grace to face each day. His wife must also be an extraordinary human being. She suffered not only the loss of their child as well but her husbands health, their financial security and the life path they were on is forever changed. My heart goes out to this entire family.
