Protection from deportation and the chance to work have been life-changing for DACA recipients. Will Trump get rid of it?
Subscribe to our channel! goo.gl/0bsAjO
The most consequential decision President Donald Trump made on immigration in his first year in office wasn’t about the wall, or who’s going to pay for it, or anything else he talked about incessantly on the campaign trail.
It was his decision to announce, on September 5, that his administration would be winding down the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program - a program he didn’t mention outright, that many people didn’t know about and even fewer understood.
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, which has protected nearly 800,000 young adult unauthorized immigrants from deportation and allowed them to work legally since 2012. The immigrants protected through DACA grew up in the US; people might not assume they are unauthorized immigrants, and they might not have even known it themselves until they were teenagers. The program was supposed to give them a chance to build a life here.
Now, DACA is on the chopping block. Trump, under pressure to make a decision about its future before September 5 (the day a group of Republican state officials were set to sue over its constitutionality), has decided that no one new will be protected under the program - and that those currently covered will start to lose their protection and work permits on March 6, 2018.
The prospect of DACA’s demise is throwing the program into sharp relief: calling attention to the “DREAMers” who’ve been able to benefit from it, and the ways in which their lives have been changed over the past five years.

If you're watching this video in June 2020, the Supreme Court has ruled to preserve protections for hundreds of thousands of DACA recipients. Read more: bit.ly/2YfKB49 The decision marks the culmination of a years-long legal battle over Trump’s decision to terminate DACA back in September 2017.

I'm a DACA Recipient and I came to America at the age of 3. I had heart diseases and I came to America because If i stayed in Korea the doctors wouldn't be able to save me. I had open heart surgery at the age of 5 and now I live in America ever since. I currently work in an animal shelter thanks to DACA and I'm pursuing Environmental Studies as an undergraduate. I'm really grateful that america saved my life but It just makes me depressed that now, our home America which was suppose to be a land of opportunity now ostracizes us. Hopefully congress can pass some legislation that protects us Dreamers but whatever happens America will and always will be my true home.

In total, 74.9 percent of applicants were born in Mexico, followed by El Salvador (4.0 percent), Honduras (2.7 percent), Guatemala (2.5 percent), South Korea (1.5 percent), Peru (1.4 percent), Brazil (1.2 percent), Colombia (1.1 percent), Ecuador (1.0) and Philippines (0.7). Regionally, Central Americans comprised 10 percent of the total, South Americans were 7 percent, Asians made up 4 percent, Caribbeans were 2 percent of the total, and those from all other countries made up the remaining 2 percent.

@karig1224
@karig1224 7 лет назад
James Burgess he's not against dreamers He's against processing this illegally. DACA was not a path towards citizenship. It was merely a bandaid Obama placed since congress isn't doing their job. But this was only a bandaid, eventually congress would've had to rule out DACA because it is against the law to use executive power to bypass the legislative branch which is what Obama did. The DREAM Act on the other hand, is a path towards citizenship. But it is not yet a law. Trump hasn't called for a mass deportation. He's only called out the law breakers, which dreamers were brought here by their parents so they have no fault in this happening. From the beginning, I researched that trump was going to give congress 6 months to pass a bill to help the dreamers. This fight is with congress, not the president. This is the push congress needed to finally get to work and help these people. I'm not into protests, but If there should be any protests it should be towards congress NOT Trump! Side note : before the comments come in about how hateful I am. My parents crossed illegally back in the 90s and I am a US born Citizen. My parents were deported when I was 18 and I have family under the DACA program. And I am a Trump supporter
@karig1224
@karig1224 7 лет назад
And something I forgot to include. In the end, every decision made will revolve around money. It wouldn't make sense to not give the dreamers under DACA the opportunity to apply for a citizenship because many of them are working, have bought cars, homes and studied here. In the end, they would benefit the country economically as long as they are hard working productive Americanized people. It would cost way too much to just round up buses and ship them off to their countries. We had the most deportations done under Obama, but he majority being deported have broken the law in some way and were caught.

+JustDrummin24 But has President Trump or anyone in his administration even mentioned getting the DREAM Act passed through Congress now that DACA is being rescinded? If it has been laid out as a plan, then I'll be more understanding of Trump's actions. Otherwise, I'm certainly not in favor, even as someone who is generally supports stricter immigration policy (though, no, I don't support the border wall plans).
@karig1224
@karig1224 7 лет назад
brendan95delany Here is the full statement from Donald Trump made on Sept 5th. He doesn't directly mention the DREAM Act, but mentions support for the dreamers and is pushing congress to help them in a way that benefits the dreamers as well as the American people. It's a little long 😆 "As President, my highest duty is to defend the American people and the Constitution of the United States of America. At the same time, I do not favor punishing children, most of whom are now adults, for the actions of their parents. But we must also recognize that we are nation of opportunity because we are a nation of laws. The legislative branch, not the executive branch, writes these laws - this is the bedrock of our Constitutional system, which I took a solemn oath to preserve, protect, and defend. In June of 2012, President Obama bypassed Congress to give work permits, social security numbers, and federal benefits to approximately 800,000 illegal immigrants currently between the ages of 15 and 36. The typical recipients of this executive amnesty, known as DACA, are in their twenties. Legislation offering these same benefits had been introduced in Congress on numerous occasions and rejected each time. In referencing the idea of creating new immigration rules unilaterally, President Obama admitted that “I can’t just do these things by myself” - and yet that is exactly what he did, making an end-run around Congress and violating the core tenets that sustain our Republic. Officials from 10 States are suing over the program, requiring my Administration to make a decision regarding its legality. The Attorney General of the United States, the Attorneys General of many states, and virtually all other top legal experts have advised that the program is unlawful and unconstitutional and cannot be successfully defended in court. There can be no path to principled immigration reform if the executive branch is able to rewrite or nullify federal laws at will. The temporary implementation of DACA by the Obama Administration, after Congress repeatedly rejected this amnesty-first approach, also helped spur a humanitarian crisis - the massive surge of unaccompanied minors from Central America including, in some cases, young people who would become members of violent gangs throughout our country, such as MS-13. Only by the reliable enforcement of immigration law can we produce safe communities, a robust middle class, and economic fairness for all Americans. Therefore, in the best interests of our country, and in keeping with the obligations of my office, the Department of Homeland Security will begin an orderly transition and wind-down of DACA, one that provides minimum disruption. While new applications for work permits will not be accepted, all existing work permits will be honored until their date of expiration up to two full years from today. Furthermore, applications already in the pipeline will be processed, as will renewal applications for those facing near-term expiration. This is a gradual process, not a sudden phase out. Permits will not begin to expire for another six months, and will remain active for up to 24 months. Thus, in effect, I am not going to just cut DACA off, but rather provide a window of opportunity for Congress to finally act. Our enforcement priorities remain unchanged. We are focused on criminals, security threats, recent border-crossers, visa overstays, and repeat violators. I have advised the Department of Homeland Security that DACA recipients are not enforcement priorities unless they are criminals, are involved in criminal activity, or are members of a gang. The decades-long failure of Washington, D.C. to enforce federal immigration law has had both predictable and tragic consequences: lower wages and higher unemployment for American workers, substantial burdens on local schools and hospitals, the illicit entry of dangerous drugs and criminal cartels, and many billions of dollars a year in costs paid for by U.S. taxpayers. Yet few in Washington expressed any compassion for the millions of Americans victimized by this unfair system. Before we ask what is fair to illegal immigrants, we must also ask what is fair to American families, students, taxpayers, and jobseekers. Congress now has the opportunity to advance responsible immigration reform that puts American jobs and American security first. We are facing the symptom of a larger problem, illegal immigration, along with the many other chronic immigration problems Washington has left unsolved. We must reform our green card system, which now favors low-skilled immigration and puts immense strain on U.S. taxpayers. We must base future immigration on merit - we want those coming into the country to be able to support themselves financially, to contribute to our economy, and to love our country and the values it stands for. Under a merit-based system, citizens will enjoy higher employment, rising wages, and a stronger middle class. Senators Tom Cotton and David Perdue have introduced the RAISE Act, which would establish this merit-based system and produce lasting gains for the American People. I look forward to working with Republicans and Democrats in Congress to finally address all of these issues in a manner that puts the hardworking citizens of our country first. As I’ve said before, we will resolve the DACA issue with heart and compassion - but through the lawful Democratic process - while at the same time ensuring that any immigration reform we adopt provides enduring benefits for the American citizens we were elected to serve. We must also have heart and compassion for unemployed, struggling, and forgotten Americans. Above all else, we must remember that young Americans have dreams too. Being in government means setting priorities. Our first and highest priority in advancing immigration reform must be to improve jobs, wages and security for American workers and their families. It is now time for Congress to act!"

I believe DACA is fair but before you get upset let me tell you why: The people protected under DACA are those who have been brought here *under the age of 16* , this means that this is the only home they have ever known. Now tell me how a 4 y/o is going to be a drug dealer or rapist. This is not including people who have made a choice to come to America, these are mostly kids strung along by their parents because their parents wanted them to be here. Now, I don't care your race but imagine you are choosing a collage to go to, you have made it though your life straight A' s being a law abiding citizen. Then one day you are stopped and told you aren't documented and you are going to be sent to a foreign land when all you've known your entire life is America. These are these kids feel.

So do people really not know that many immigrants specifically migrate to Mexico first from other countries before entering the U.S. Because Mexico receives many immigrants everyday from all over Latin America and truth be told many are actually Central Americans. That Mexico doesn't want and in fact even had to tell the Trump administration that they can only accept deportees who are Mexican nationals.

Levon Gevorgyan don't you get it? Many lives are going to be impacted for the worst. My mother came here illegally because she wanted a better life. She didn't come to sell drugs, or to rape or kill anyone, she came because she wanted her future to be better. She came here and worked her ass of at 15+ different jobs. No, immigrants aren't "stealing jobs". They're taking jobs at fast food restaurants or small shops etc. These are jobs you don't see many Americans do. All people want is a good life. Mexico isn't a very good place at the moment and people are trying to find a better life for themselves, they just want to be more successful. Most immigrants have no intention of harming anyone in any way. They're trying to get away from their toxic countries for the better, and trying to get to America legally is so hard, you need lots of money, and many jobs in Mexico don't pay enough. A lot of immigrants come from nothing, so you can't expect them to fly here legally. Please understand this :(

People can't choose where they are born or how they are born anymore than they can choose the color of their skin. Illegal immigration is a problem but kicking out people who have already lived here all their lives is not the answer. So many people are saying "its a fact that they're illegal and should be deported back to their country". The fact is that its sad how us 'real americans' value uncontrollable statuses such as where and how a person was born, over the work and effort they put into being a contributing member of society just like any other 'real american'. We look at our history and think that our ancestors were fools for believing they were better than others just because they were lucky to be born a certain skin tone, and we understand that its unjustified because your race isnt something you can control being born as. But here we are in our 'progressive and enlightened' america following the same train of thought about people lucky or unlucly enough to be born in this country. Again, illegal immigration is a problem. But kicking out people who have already lived here all their lives is not the answer. They've worked just as hard if not harder than anyone else to live here and deserve to be called american as much as you and me. But unlike you and me they didn't have the privileged of being given citizenship because they were lucky enough to be born here. They deserve to be american because they've earned it.

One common misconception people have about immigrants is that we think they come to America and see it as the best country in the world where everything is better. That couldn't be further from the truth actually, most immigrants report that living in America is much more difficult than it was back in their own country because our economy, health care, work environment, and the social norms are so different from what they're used to and its much harder to live here mainly because of financial reasons. But they had no other choice other than to come here because their home countries are in poverty, (due to 'great' countries like our America among others monopolizing on 3rd world countries and preventing them from developing so we can benefit from cheap labor and resources), or because their home country is in war, famine, over run by drugs lords, etc. They are not safe to raise a family in. People come here not because they wanted to, but because they didn't have a choice if they wanted to live in decent homes with reasonable opportunities for their children. To say that they are in the wrong for not going back after learning this is to say that they are in the wrong for choosing not to go back to a country where they would experience much suffering, struggle to survive, death, or any combination of the three.

Listen, I understand where you are all coming from. I do. My parents immigrated to this country too, but you have to realize that the world is not fair. You CANNOT save everyone from their pain and suffering. Could you imagine if all the wealthy and affluent countries just started taking in anyone who wanted to come? EVERYBODY would leave the poor countries, but chaos would ensue right after. When you accept people into your country, you also accept their problems. You have to look after yourself before you can look around you.

I don't know how to answer your question but it got me thinking about a lot of things so I did some research. We issue about 600,000 green cards per year, and give about the same number of people citizenship. There are 4.5 million people trying to get green cards through normal channels, and there are 11 million trying to win a "green card lottery" which is easier to apply to and anyone can win, but is extremely unlikely to. There are 50,000 winners per year. So at least 15 million people want green cards or citizenship which is 5% of our population. At the same time, it will take 25 years for people currently applying to get here, if no one else applies in the meantime. No wonder we have so much illegal immigration. I think we could smoothly handle a few percent of our current population per year, but we handle 0.2% per year. Talk about broken. Still, in japan it's way lower. Seems like about 10,000 foreigners became naturalized japanese citizens per year. We are so far ahead!

Life in this country has been great for me, I'm thankful to be here and have opportunities even without an education, the American dream still exist for everyone legal and illegal. All you have to do is keep trying, never give up and work your butt off. For all my fellow immigrants being scared with the end of DACA, don't be stay positive, and just keep in mind that if there's a will there's a way. Never stop dreaming! grab life by the horns! and more importantly, for anything in life ,all you got to do is try and don't ever be afraid of failing. The only memory I have of Mexico is when my older brothers got jumped by some narcos n nearly killed right before my eyes which is why I think it got engraved in my mind n can still remember even tho I was like 4. I can't even remember how Mexico looks, that my birthplace but I live most of my life in the United states which makes it my home as I don't even know what it feels like to live in mexico, all I know is I don't want to go back to that horrible place. I agree with him basically because he saved them... If he didn't do anything the program would've ended like DAPA did, these folks would've been deported immediately (or at ICE's leisure) and that would've been the end of it. Instead he ended it by giving the folks enrolled on it 4 months leniency (this will give Congress enough time to fix it hopefully, meaning that nothing will change for DACA recipients except they'll now have a pathway to citizenship).... However, if it's phased out that's fine on me too. These folks didn't do anything wrong but their parents did... everyone else's relatives came here legally and the US accepts some 1 million per year.. Despite my sympathies for these folks their parents really screwed up... Most other countries would've either imprisoned them(like Mexico), enslaved them (like the middle east), or relegated them to slums/ concentration camps (like Europe and Australia). The US gave them defacto legal status and many States just let the whole thing slide. Long story short we've been MORE than merciful to these law breakers.... I hope it all works out for them, specifically for the DACA kids, the DAPA recipients should've done it legally.

When Juan says “...we sold all our toys, and embarked on this journey” Vox uses an image of a plane, to imply they just boarded a jet and came to America. So this family entirely composed of illegal aliens just flew into an international airport in the U.S.?!? Or is it more likely that they travelled overland from Venezuela, and crossed into America illegally from Mexico? This is the exact reason why it’s hard to trust large media corporations nowadays, because the story’s are all slanted one way or the other; but hey, don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story.

We have had 3 amnesties I remember. Each time they say in the future they will enforce the law, especially against employers who hire illegal aliens, driving down demand for our poorest workers. DACA is more of the same. You have been violating our law for so long, we give up. If you have no job and not much hope of getting one, take a look at the house with the garage sale they used in one of those videos. You will never own your own home. That nice place the illegal was in took one house out of our inventory. The 1% just want workers, they don't care about you. Having destroyed the unions, they can make a large pool of desperate people fight over lousy jobs and the remains of the middle class will kiss their feet in fear of the very real chance that they will be poor soon.
@MB-yw6rd
@MB-yw6rd 7 лет назад
"...hinting that they were probably unconstitutional..." that's so dishonest... The reason why DACA and DAPA are so contentious is because both programs were established by presidential executive order and not by congressional action. A federal district court in early 2015 issued an order to block the initiatives from going forward while the legal case proceeded. An appeals court affirmed the ruling and added a broader one, saying that the program also exceeded Obama’s statutory authority. Because the Supreme Court split the decision 4-4 (due to one judge’s recusal), the case gets remanded back to the highest appeals court and that decision is upheld. These are the ONLY facts that matter

I'm from Texas, but moved away after high school. My friend reached out to me yesterday (after not talking for the past year), asking if he could potentially come stay up here if DACA doesn't get replaced. I told him absolutely and I would have an air mattress tomorrow if he needed too. This makes me so sick. His mom left after he was born, his dad died when he was 8, and the only family he had left was distant cousins in Texas so he was taken across the border from Juarez. He's been working his entire life, learned English, got an Associates degree, became an assistant manager at his job, bought a car, and he was talking about buying a house. DACA allowed him to step out the shadows. But, now they have all of his information and now he's at risk of being deported!? There are so many lazy Americans who mooch off the system and don't contribute, my friend only wants to contribute and America is all he knows. This is his home.

GonzalezJio I'm sorry but it cannot be, for if we do not uphold the law it will send the same message to the rest of the world that 'America doesn't care jut illegally enter' & thus it becomes a perverted self fulfilling prophecy where it forever continues in which we have 'laws' but they're not really enforced and a 'boarder' and it's not really observed and then we have a 'Constitution' that is just some damn piece of paper. Our prosperity, the thing that largely attracts all, is built on many things but among theses are: personal liberty & responsibility, a free market capitalistic system wherein hard work and entrepreneurship reap rewards. A fair system of equality NOT of outcome - we are not socialist - but on equality of opportunity. We don't care if you're purple, if or where you came from. If you're ambitious you have what our country admires. Please come legally, that is what we ask, thank you.
@ZacharyDial
@ZacharyDial 7 лет назад
You're saying "please come legally" to someone who came here when they were one year old. Like I get what you're saying and agree with 90% of it (theoretically at least, I'd say it's actually way too rosy a picture of America) but I don't understand why we should be able to deport people who really are no less American as us just because of some paperwork. Like sure we have laws, but some laws, including our immigration laws, are pretty much garbage and they don't apply equally across socio-economic status... so as great and awesome as you make our country to be, it's obvious that the laws aren't applied equally and that the opportunities aren't at all equal either. How can we have equality of opportunity when we won't even let people who in every way are indistinguishable from legal Americans stay here? And by that I mean, equality of opportunity for the person who was one year old when they came here. I mean I don't see any reason to keep ANYONE here if this is what we'll do. Why deport these specific "criminals?" Why not deport those in Wall St. who ripped off millions of people? Or people who smoke marijuana? Basically what I'm saying is we can't deport people just because of their legal status. I'd argue these are the people who are going to work the hardest, and be the MOST law-abiding. They'd make our country actually be a better place to live because they'd do the jobs most of us wouldn't. There are MILLIONS of jobs open RIGHT now. Mike Rowe talks about it a lot, yet they go unfilled. Why not instead of deporting them, expedite their paperwork and get them the jobs we won't do? I see a solution to two problems this way. I only see creating problems yours.

Man, being an American kid from Latin descendant who's just starting college, I now better understand the dangers for my future in this country. It would be terrible if I got deported along with my family right at the start to a good future. My parents weren't joking when they said education is the key to success. College is more important now than it ever was before, especially if you're undocumented. This is why I thank God, my parents both earned their legal American citizenship papers back in 2009 when Obama was president. My siblings and I don't have to worry about anything. Thank God for Obama. Thank God for my parents taking action. Even though I am not affected by this, doesn't mean I don't care. Of course I care! My friends and extended family aren't legal here. They are in high schools, in the military, in colleges, in the workforce in science in journalism in tech. They need your help to get the final step of the way.

Funny how US just goes and disrupts Iraq, Lybia, Afghanistan and Syria and bombs their cities with citizens but then refuse to even take care of the same children whose lives were disrupted.

If those neighbours and children are in the country illegally, then they should be deported. They should not be there. It's like letting people stay in a hotel free of charge without booking a room or anything, just letting them stay there while everyone else gets into the hotel legally.
@callies8907
@callies8907 7 лет назад
Except this is a country, not a hotel, and risking life and limb crossing a border and then paying more taxes than the potus does more than covers the "charge." And these are people trying to survive, trying to go to school and get jobs, not vacationers trying to cheat the concierge at the best western.

No they aren't. I do not care if they were born in America, if they're parents aren't legal then they aren't Americans. I'm glad they're ending DACA, it's completely unfair that illegal immigrants can come into our country and have a kid and suddenly get all the benefits and they can't be deported just because they had their kid in the US.
@ICanChangeItLater
@ICanChangeItLater 7 лет назад
Les Salazar you don't even know what you're talking about. Your first sentence is wrong. People under DACA weren't born here. The video isn't about people who have a child to be allowed legal status, it's about people who were brought here as child. DACA does not concern their parents.

You were brought to and lived in the US for 18 years. You've come to love the culture, people, and opportunities. This is your home. Tomorrow, you find out you're undocumented and are forced to go to a country you know nothing about. You don't know the people or the language. You had no choice in being brought to the US. If you cannot see the value of DACA, you are what hinders the progress in the US we so desperately need.

because Canada has a merit based system, the same system that was called Fascist by the media for being too harsh compared to the American one.. Australia has the same issue... Latin Americans seem to have a much easier time of it in the US 5 of the top 10 immigrant groups in the US are from Latin America including Mexico which makes up about 26 million inhabitants by it's lonely.... compared with Canada who's top 10 immigrant groups list is dominated by Asians

I hate how everyone complains about, "Oh, they are breaking the law. Punish them." I'm sure everyone has broken the law before. Speeding, littering, and etc. I don't see everyone hating on DACA complain to other laws. That's how humans are. We pick and choose what benefits us the most.

Unconstitutional? On what grounds? This is a pretty hilarious statement being that this Constitution was created for a country comprised mainly by immigrants. Being uneducated and not caring about being educated or not even wanting to aquire knowledge and information in this day and age is just ridiculous. I'm not even American and I know more about American culture than most ignorant Americans who have such a blatant disregard for human life and safety. This generalization that every immigrant goes to America to commit criminal acts can only come from a place of ignorance. I especially love when people say "They come to steal our jobs." or the "They come here and don't even work and live off my taxpaying dollars." Which is it, buddy? Either they have all the jobs or have no jobs at all. Can't be both. Quit being so bigoted and start developing a heart and, hopefully, a brain to match.

I see no problem with sending someone back to their original country who didn't come here legally, including people who came as kids. If they're fleeing violence, let them come as refugees. This is one of the reasons why we Democrats lost last November. We made it the hill we died on and I don't think it was worth it. Also I absolutely hate that the name they chose for the people who are helped by the program was "dreamer." They should've chosen a neutral term, not a positive one. It makes anyone opposed to the program feel like a villain. I'm not denying that there may be some racists/xenophobes who oppose DACA, but others just hate to see people dodge the consequences of a committing a crime.
