Thrand pits the Romanian made Dacian Falx against the Nepalese Khukuri / Kukri to see if how well they cut versus each other and to pierce Chain Maille armor! over ballistic gel with gambeson or padding. The Dacian Falx was made by Iamandi Christian in Romania and the Gurkha warrior Blade Khurkuri crafted in the Himalayas, Nepal imported by Medieval Shoppe Australia

Instead of penetrating for lethality, I think the blade shape allows one to go around the armor in ways Roman infantry was no experienced with. Most roman infantry were only armored at vital parts but there are plenty of exposed skin
@Thrand11

Agreed but the accounts say it did penetrate early Roman armor and cut though shields not just go around it.

Man, it is so good to have you back. Could you test a reverse katana or saber strike where the blade is pointed forward like the falx? It would be a false edge strike, but with the intention of hooking down similar to the falx. Do you think that would be effective against armor? Basically, flip the sword over and strike with the tip as it’s curved forward on the curved sword. You could just do a false edge strike with the tip on a saber since the guard would be preventing you from holding it reversed.
@Thrand11
@Thrand11 Год назад
We could try that in a future video
@pinarppanrapir9489
@pinarppanrapir9489 Год назад
I'm curious about that as well! People keep saying the bowie back tip cut is better for fighting than using the true edge, so a comparison between true and false edge cuts would help me understand better.

@ElDrHouse2010
@ElDrHouse2010 Год назад
@@Thrand11 I heard the Oakeshott Type XVIIIc wins almost every contest. Rn there is a cheaper model of it that comes with a cool (but lame) metal ring leather scabbard being sold in Kult of Athena that Skallagrim reviewed. Around the 300-500 price range, not like the Albion Principe (that even tho its a bada$$ sword it is expensive). That blade shape might be the optimal one for cutting. Who knows. Its thin, its wide, it tapers. Dont test it against metal though I dont see the reason we all know slashes just wont cut it.

i wonder how big of a difference a kukri is to a knife the same size in various things. Surely it must be harder to make a kukri just from the shape alone so the benefits must be huge over a normal knife. Maybe it's just for the extra hacking power on wood.

if your blade gets stuck on the shield you are dead, there is no point in testing shield penetration.

Ive got a old kukri about twice as long. Got it from a pawn shop for only $10 when I was about 13. It has silver inlaid handle and a silver lion's face pommel. Im not sure exactly how old it is as specifics in documentation on them is pretty thin. But the closest thing I found was Nepalese military officers kukris from the colonial age. Most similar were between 1780s and 1860s. Old enough that the handke wood has petrified into near stone though.

In the Dacian times, the long blade was called a Falx, the shorter blade was called a Sica. Sadly it was not made as wide as the Khukkri. Maybe because the Sica was made to go in a sheath too. It’s strange that they didn’t, they were pretty good metal workers.

@@Thrand11 I really wish we could find a smith that could do that Napoleonic Khopesh. Oh, other idea I had was some wooden armor I was working on. I used too crap of base wood but my idea was a wooden lamellar which was slats of wood covered in glued canvas akin to an array of small shields. Didn't hold up great due to the poor choice in wood (just some cheap thin stuff from a local lumberyard), but I wonder if better wood would have helped it hold up.

Firstly the Khukuri is NOT based on the Kopis or Falcata, we have a continuous use of recurves, both knives and swords. on the Indian subcontinent that lead to the khukuri over a 1000+ years. Please do not keep spreading Eurocentric misinformation. Secondly, Khukuri were definitely used in close range circular stabs to penetrate armour, both Indian mail and mail covered gaps in Char Aina armour. There is even a British period account/source mentioning that khukuri were used to stab and rip out and we are still taught that in Khukuri use today. Do you think the Gorkha were stupid to try to cut through Dhal, overlapping ring mail, Char Aina etc? They fought against armour even just in British service from 1819 to the Indian Mutiny to the Anglo Afghan wars. Hanshee Khukuri have more acute tips for penetration and were used against armour, wider tips developed when the need for that penetration wasn't there. I like your videos usually but this is an apples to pears comparison.
