I was at Catterick Garrison on and off through the late 80s to the late 90s. I always remember a conversation I had one night regarding the many barracks areas, if those walls could talk, the amount of men who went through year after year, decade after decade, all with their own story to tell. The history in Catterick...!

I always remember that during 16 weeks basic training at No 9 Royal Engineers,Cove,Hants in 1952,we had to enter a Nissen hut filled with Gas,then take off our Gas masks and find our stumbling way out. Don’t suppose that’s allowed in recent years.

@An0n3mu55 Thank you for bringing me up to date. I thought with H & S it would be banned.

My dad's brother Derek Bowler was based here. He died in a motorcycle accident outside of the camp. He was on leave. I believe his motorbike went under a truck in 1956. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I also believe he is buried in the Military Catterick Cemetary

@Helen Robson Hello Helen, thank you very much for the response. I have a photo of Derek's headstone in the Catterick cemetery. In my research, I cannot find anything in your papers as of the accident. If you have any information, it will be gratefully received. I am writing my families story and if I can't verify it I can't write it in. Rae x ps. hilhorstrae@hotmail.com

@@bobawolf My birthday was April 1940, I was exempt as outside the dates for NS. From the local recruiting office I was offered the Scots Guards or the Pioneer Corp as a 3 year regular or any other regiment for 6 years or 9 years. I choose the Argylls for 6 years. My School chum was born Dec. 39 , he was called up. NS went on after that but only for those that had been serving a civvie trade , once their trade training was over they still had to do their NS, hence NS were still around in the early 60s.
