Welcome to Norfolkfords, I am Lewis Eves and in this video Dad will be teaching us how different draft systems work on different tractors.
At Norfolkfords we like to educate those interested in farming, classic machinery, modern machinery and technologies, the trials and troubles of growing British flowers and bulbs for the UK market and most importantly FORDS.
Feel free to LIKE, COMMENT and SUBSCRIBE because all of this helps grow the channel and I always like hearing from everyone who watches. I always try to reply when possible.

This has always been confusing for me. He explains this better than anyone else I’ve seen.

Embarrassingly; I operated MFs for many years as the child of a dairy farmer and never fully understood the two lever system.. Great video.

It all came from the Patented invention of Harry Ferguson. The three point Hitch, otherwise known as the Ferguson System, was the start of it all. Most all of the Tractor Manufacturers, except Ford, waited for the Patent to expire in 1956. However, They seemingly didn’t want to acknowledge its origin, rather They tried to assume that it was Their invention. Ford, under the leadership of of Henry II, ignored the directive of Harry Ferguson, and went ahead and continued using the System on the 8N. A lawsuit followed ,initiated by Ferguson, and wasn’t settled until August of 1952 at which time Ford was ordered to stop production of the 8N. Ford also had to pay for the Patent infringement. After the merger of Massey Harris and Ferguson in 1953, The System was put on existing Massey Harris Tractors. However, They lacked Draft Control because of the Tractor design and, were no better than buying a kit from a Farm and Fleet Store and putting it on other Tractors of the Time. Fergieman

No No No! Your explanation is wrong! Harry Ferguson found that the mounted plough tries to nose dive when you pull forward. The deeper the plough, the more PRESSURE on the Top Link and this force is what is controlled and measured by the Draft Control, Top Link system. This is how we get the weight transfer you are talking about. With 2 and 3 furrow ploughs the Draft pressure is quite good and measurable, but as the ploughs and machinery get larger and longer, the Draft force on the Top Link gets less. And so Larger tractors (and John Deere) use the pulling force on the lower arms to measure the load and depth of the plough.

I struggle quite a bit with draft control on the fendts, can't seem to find a sweet spot for it, probably operator error but it seems very lazy to react
