I don’t know, I think I would’ve told my kid to flee the country. Helping with the police confession feels like a betrayal. Especially since it turns out Toni was the actual killer.

That mining worker that noticed a random set of tracks in the desert and decided to follow it deserves a medal. God knows how many of us wouldn't have given it a second thought and kept driving, and Micaela would probably never have been found.

Right!? That fathers voice on that recording was the sound of pure and utter heartbreak and unimaginable pain. That was definitely hard to listen to, because the emotion was so raw and unfiltered.

@@cainesy7913remember that they had no way of knowing she was missing in a serious way until some time passed--I imagine very few employers would take well to someone who ran off every time they didn't get a text from their girlfriend for a few hours, because most of the time, the person is just fine. It's hindsight that tells us otherwise.

It’s honestly refreshing to hear a parent hold their criminal child responsible, all too often you hear of parents enabling their murderer child and coddling them. I loved hearing his father say “and what about michaela’s decisions?”
@@joehogan3691 Can you blame him? It's ingrained into us as humans. It must of been heartbreaking for his father to go through and I respect him for not giving in and acceping what his son did.
Kody's reaction to that was so typical for that type of person. It enraged him to not have the pity focus on him that he turned aggressive, demanding and making threats to regain control of the narrative. I can only imagine how exhausted his father must've felt by that time. So sick of a son who thinks only of himself and his feelings. I couldn't handle having a kid like that. He'd be in therapy so fast long before it ever got to this point.
He's showing what a normal thought process is, something his son is devoid of. He has to protect the rest of the family, he's probably figured out at this point he never really knew his son, and to let justice take it's course.
Wow, Kody's dad seems really decent. He wanted his son to take responsibility and do what's right. He didn't say "stop talking now, I'm getting a lawyer, we're not cooperating etc." He had complete empathy for what Micaela's family were going through and how they deserved the truth. I don't know why Kody is so messed up but his dad is a decent guy.
Apparently Cody's father is the one who drove Toni to his son's lawyer's office to record that confession. He really did the best he could to get justice for Micaela's family.

@@SA-pi3zm With state of the public school system, coupled with the mess of indoctrination and debt that higher education is, children today receive better experience and practical education from a job as opposed to school. The real sad part is that this is the case more today than it has been in the entire modern era.
He really cared. I hope he got some counseling to help work through such a traumatic event. Losing someone you care about is really hard, especially when it's in such a horrific way

Micaela sure is pretty. Toni is hideous. Kody is obviously unintelligent and has anger issues. Javier is an angel. There are no winners in this sad story. Glad to hear she was denied parole again in 2024.
The fact that Kody and Toni really expect us to believe Micaela was so attached to Kody, after Javier said in the beginning she kept telling Kody to leave her alone, is just sick.

The amount of times we've seen obsessive men just jumping at the chance to claim that their victim wanted them is astounding. It's as if murder wasn't enough, and they have to take away their victim's dignity aswell.
Javier is a great kid. Not only did he help police understand Micaela’s daily schedule and habits, but even her moods and thought processes. You could tell he really was concerned about her and wanted to help however he could.

Toni's demeanor during her confession was more disturbing to me than Kody's. I have no idea how much of Kody's emotion was real or feigned, but even if it was feigned, at least he felt the need to feign emotion. Toni is the type who would be a camp guard at Auschwitz. It creeped me out how cheerfully she explained her murderous actions by saying, "I wasn't thinking."
Someone didn't learn a thing from WW2. My guy everyone had a capacity for evil, that's what makes it so insidious. The more virtuous you think you are the more likely you would be the first to break and do something terrible if pushed.
@@hisaonakai9489I know that therapists sometime record patients and those records have to be confidential. I’m assuming that had it been a normal consolation, the recording would have stayed private and there would be nothing illegal about having that recording. Lawyer-client confidentiality does not apply to criminal confessions. Lawyers have to report those kinds of things or they can lose their license. It’s similar to how doctors can bypass HIPPA and contact law enforcement if they think someone is in danger. Or how therapist will report clients who express interest in harming themselves or others. Privacy is important but they still mandated reporters.

As soon as I heard Javier talking I knew he was innocent. He was giving up all the information he knew, even told the police officer that he thought she was unsafe, something murderers usually don't do. He sounded very honest and I felt so bad for him because you can tell he really cares about her
his rock solid alibi as well. If he was guilty he wouldn't disclose information what can easily be disproved. You know he is innocent the moment he tells his exact whereabouts.
Honestly, he seems like a very sweet kid. I hope everyone involved in this case is doing okay in their healing journey. I can't imagine the pain of loss they're still feeling to this day.

His phone call to his dad was a clear indication of his narcissism. He was only crying about himself. How he was having nightmares. Even his dad tried to remind him about Mickeala and he just got pissed about it.

I have a lot of respect for Kodys father. A lot of people don't empathize with the victims of their chikdrens crimes and only think of themselves. He did the right thing by helping Micaelas family get the truth from his son. You can love your child AND do the right thing as a fellow human being.
I came to the comments to say the same thing. As a true crime enthusiast, I don't think I've ever seen this. It's almost always the opposite of this, with parents claiming their child is innocent or even assisting them with the crime. His parents are truly amazing people worthy of much respect.
Listening to his Dad just ripped my heart out. It seems like he did his best but with some people something is just broken. No amount of talking, listening or attention is enough. Nothing is their fault and if its obvious that it is, all the attention deserves to be on them because of how THEY feel. If he hadn't fostered a relationship with his son, he wouldn't have confessed so quick.
my heart always breaks for the parents of the kids who do such heinous things when you can tell the parents don’t deny their child’s guilt, encourage their child’s confession & help the investigation when they can. i can’t imagine being in his situation. obviously my heart breaks even more for that poor girl and her loved ones but there’s also room to feel for the parents who do the right thing when their child is likely guilty or obviously guilty. it would be absolutely sickening to have such an evil child who could do something so disturbing and heinous then continues to feel bad for himself even during the confession. hope cody’s having a horrible time in prison
It's pretty amazing that the police keeps telling us "Call IMMEDIATELY if you think someone is missing, the first hours are the most important" and then when Micaela's mother calls, they don't start searching for her until the day after. Nice job guys, knew that I could count on you :D
It is the first 3 half hours that need a quick response . But of course the Police have no end of teenagers leaving home . or staying at a friends without saying . but its no excuse a beautiful young girl goes missing they should act as a just in case . however by time she was reported missing she would have been dead . I agree I do believe the girl hated her Micalia so much she persuaded Kody to kill her clearly it was planned with the plastic wrist bands and the shovel it may have been in the car , however you just dont FIND Plastic Cuffs like that , they wanted her dead , as it said . there may have been arguement ,s but they took her to the desert to kill the poor girl . What she must have suffered and the fear and horror for her must have been unimaginable . Safe in Gods arms . May God give her family help and love , and both parents of the two killers

It's like the police isn't worried about actually protecting people and instead waits to recover the body. You are not investigators. You are the protectors of the citizen. Your job is to protect the citizen, not wait until they are found dead
The way Toni is just nonchalantly telling the lawyer what happened is bone chilling. She shows no emotion whatsoever. She sounds like a true psychopath. I’m glad she told on herself. I don’t even know how she got the possibility of parole after this senseless crime. May Mikayla R.I.P.

Considering how over reported this was, how you can see/hear a 100 different videos and tv shows, and read the entire court room testimony, there's really no good reason Toni got a slap on the wrist in comparison. It's more like legal leap holes and "Hey, they both said he gave her a concussion first, so what if she took his knife and slit her throat. The diary stuff is circumstantial! "
One thing ive noticed in multiple interviews is a guilty suspect who was the last to see the victim, will claim that the last time they saw the victim was in passing with another person and give a very ambiguous description of the person
I could tell immediately that Javier was genuinely concerned and in no way involved in this tragedy! The world needs more kids like Javier! So sorry for your loss...

The father’s voice in their first conversation, at the station... Man, he is in an awful spot: loves his son, knows he’s broken, having to set the boundary that says “no escape from your horrifying crime”, possibly even somewhat scared of him, and just begging him to do the right thing. That’s heartbreaking. That’s real character, too. Huge respect to the dad for pushing him to face the consequences.

Before judging that man too hard maybe you should think a bit about the society you all live in. You love the roll of alpha, masculine men and feminine, petite women, like Barbie and Ken. The males are supposed to be tough, aggressive and go-getters, to take what they want and support their wives and children. Women are supposed to give their men and children what they need, support them, adore them and take care of every single need they have, clean the house, nurture the children and pamper their hard working husbands. So, caring, nurturing men are looked upon as gay or weak and tough females are looked upon as dominant or lesbians. This is the reality your children grows up in and what do you think happens when teenage boys don't get what they want? They take it or throw a fit. Kody was violent and unbalanced. He was also violent and involved with a toxic girl who's whole existence was to be a girlfriend of Kody, an accesoir. Not a self reliant and secure young woman. This is probably more what made Kody go along with the heinous crime than anything else. Kody's dad spent all his day at work, seeing his son maybe in the evening and weekends. How much of all this do you actually think he knew about? You are the only country I know about that have all this "teenage drama" where young people think you can swipe the problems away by killing a friend. It doesn't happen anywhere else! Maybe it is time for you all to vote progressive, start paying taxes used to create a society where both parents work a normal 6-8 hour day, with paid and mandatory vacation and stuff the rest of us already have. If you ever have the misfortune to encounter a person like this, and try to “fix” them, you will experience the truth of the futility of that effort. Blaming the father for his son’s behavior is not valid. There’s no suggestion that the father abused him, or otherwise pushed him into this criminality or hostility. Consider this: Are your parents responsible for all of your behavior? Are you nothing more than an extension of your parents? Do you have your own mind, making your own decisions, acting as an independent person? Do you blame your parents for all of your own mistakes, or worse, blame them for your crimes? Other parents in this situation have attempted to hide their children’s crimes, and protect sociopaths from the law, while subjecting society to future murders. Kody’s father did the opposite, to hold Kody accountable, and to keep him from killing anyone else. So yes, he deserves credit, for seeing the situation for the catastrophe is was, and urging Kody to make the morally correct decision.

It's so frustrating that the lie they chose and stuck to was that she, who was terrified of him, wanted to get back together with him out of nowhere despite years of stalking, past abuse, and her current relationship. One last attempt to disrespect her.

It’s clear to me that he had mentioned Michaela before and thus Toni’s crazy fear of jealousy drove her to persuade him to kill her. They got the sentence they deserved… a lifetime a part.
Toni should never get out of prison. She’s already proven she’s capable of cold-blooded murder and if given the chance, she would do it again. She’s beyond creepy.

They didn’t ever mention why. My guess is because he was not her attorney. She was contacting him to see if she could be represented by him. He told her that it depended on what she told him.

Javier is a great kid. You can just tell. Hes worried about his friend / girlfriend, hes very honest, he asks the right questions, he goes to work, gets good grades, and takes his girl to the taco truck for lunch, etc. His parents should be very proud of him! Im so sorry for his loss.
When they asked him if he had any questions, his mind immediately went to finding his friend and how the police were going about it. Parents def raised a good one.

Massive props to Kody's dad for actually confronting his son and enforcing how immoral his behavior was and encouraging him to talk and tell the truth. When the narrator said they left his father alone in the room with him, I rolled my eyes, figuring his father was gonna tell him to shut up and that there was an attorney on their way right now. I feel awful for Kody's father, because you can tell he's absolutely torn up about this and he sounds like a good dad. RIP Micaela, you are missed.

Kodys dad seems like a seriously stand up man. His plea to his own son to do what's right for the victim while also not trying to sidestep anything, even saying what he's done is heinous. We see many parents try to do the exact opposite. You can tell how much it's killing him as a dad though
Really makes you wonder if he was always like this or it just took a crisis like this to sober him up. I really, really wonder about how good of parents these people really were. I'm sure there are some outliers - like parents that were great and their kid was fucked up by circumstances beyond their control - but its got to be in the vast, vast minority.
I actually think Kody wouldn't have been involved in killing Micaela if not for Toni's presence. If he was alone with Micaela, she would still be alive.

If Toni ever gets out on parole it'll be awful. She so casually explained the murder and didn't seem to care she took someones life. Even confessing that they had a chance to save her but didn't. Jesus christ.
I love how her sentence was life with no possibility of parole for 18 years but she's already having parole hearings at 10 years. It's a joke how we treat murderers with kid gloves while drug dealers get 100 year + sentences. Murder should be LIFE no possibility of parole EVER. If you took somebody's life, your life should be over, forever. No second chances just as there weren't any for the victim.

The guy gave off this, "Bruh, I went to work and then suddenly everything was fucked" energy. You know immediately with his tight af clock in time this kid's alibi was tight af, he was at work. Based on the time frame and age, he probably is working a restaurant or retail job, the kind of shit people would notice if you went off somewhere for a couple hours. It was obvious he was at work.

You can tell how politely Javier was trying to stress during his interview that this was not normal behavior. He knew they would look at her past runaway and assume that was all this was, and he was trying so hard to make it clear that if this was in fact the case, she would have told someone. Poor kid

The only people truly suffering from the loss of Micaela, is her family and her boyfriend. It’s so heartbreaking, knowing that you can have someone with you one day, and then never see or talk to them the next day.
I am SHOCKED that it took the police several days to even request the school surveillance footage! They’d have had their suspect detained and found her sooner!

They obviously didn't make any real effort to coordinate with each other on what to say. "Oh, those texts? Yea, I needed my ex girlfriend to help move some plywood". Just dumb kids. For all her murderous planning, she was not very bright and he was just as dumb going along with it. Violent but brainless, both of them.
I'm so glad it wasn't the boyfriend. I thought for sure they were going to find he didn't actually go to work when he said, but was pleasantly surprised when the camera showed he went to work and was there until 10pm. I hope he got some mental health help. Even a high-school relationship, it van be traumatic to have someone you care about and are close with pass away, especially in such a horrific way.

I haven’t seen any comments specifically noting how chilling it is that Toni, in confessing her part in the murder, self described as not being mad, just kind of frustrated at Micaela. This is someone who so genuinely thinks mild frustration is worth killing over that she can so casually and flippantly talk about it as though she were ordering pizza or chatting at lunch.
It’s because these days everyone is desensitized and it has greatly skewed their moral judgement. They watch violence in the news and in entertainment daily. It has become acceptable to use vulgar language in normal conversation. Sex and porn are pushed on our children through the media, internet and now at least in some areas through the public school system. This slow drip of filth in our daily lives has allowed most young people to look at violent situations as just another thing that gets posted to the internet.
She honestly comes across (and speaks as though) she has some mental disabilities, possibly a brain injury or something. No idea. But it is absolutely terrifying, you're right.

The fact that Tony got the chance to plead guilty to second degree instead of being sentenced to first degree murder without possibility of parole is disgusting. She was just as involved in the crime if not more than kody and she deserved the max punishment as well.

@ssssssssszzzz I'd say theres a pretty good possibility that this dad is exactly what he seems. In toxic or traumatic households it can be very hard for an abusive father especially to hold their temper in high stress situations. They don't typically think about if they're being watched and sometimes don't care. Cody showed no signs of fear of his father either of him just being there or of his reaction to telling him what he'd done. The dad broke down in tears right along with his son and encouraged his son to fess up and give the family and police all the answers they needed and basically be a man do the right thing. Also made sure to say he wasn't going to abandon him and he loved him. These are not typical of the parents that we usually hear about breeding monsters and murderers. Jmo
That father speaking to his son is a broken man. You can feel the emotion in his voice. You can tell he is a good man, a man that will do the right thing even though it must be the hardest thing he has ever done. Very heartfelt.

I don’t think she would get into a vehicle with him if she knew Toni was there too. Especially “if” she was trying to get back with Kody. She probably got tricked and Toni popped up and that’s when she demanded out of the car.
I pray Toni never is let out of prison. The idea she was given such a short sentence with parole that soon is outrageous. I think the lies are still deep in this story. So many unanswered questions.
The way Kodys father broke... I felt that. He was hurting for that girl. His heart was shattered by his son. My heart goes out to him, his family and Micaelas family. No one should have to go through this. I hope Kody and Toni rot in jail and are miserable everyday they are imprisoned.

Toni should have absolutely got life without parole. The chilling calmness of her retelling the timeline of the murder, admitting that they kicked and punched her as she was trying to get up, the fact that she could tell micaela was incoherent as they beat her, she did everything that Kody did. Her sentence is appalling. For me, Toni was the mastermind/jealous girlfriend who convinced her violent boyfriend that they needed to get rid of her. Kody was so in love with Toni that even when confessing to the crime kept Toni out of it.
I totally agree, she probably would have gotten it if it wasn't for the plea deal that she earned herself. hopefully they deny her parole again and she actually gets to serve a life sentence
