That last line was good! We keep our reactions genuine, so although we pause the videos/songs to comment, sometimes we do speak over the music a bit, like we always do when sharing music together. Thanks for watching!
@The FrontRoom Green Eyes is one of my most favorite songs. Can you also do Jill Scott's... My Petition? If you do Jill Live then do her He Loves Me (Lyzel in E Flat) she mixes every genre including some operatic moments...
She has said in interviews that this song was written freestyling and she was imitating with her sister how her aunts would talk about the men in their lives ... Legend ❤
Erykah has said this song was improvised during this concert and she kept it... it's now a true classic. Also, her background singers are her sisters and cousin.
@@cliffh.2432 Usually when people ask if an artist wrote a song, they mean did it come from the artist's mind or is it a cover song? And I would claim it was partially written bc she said her band would improvise over that groove during rehearsals. This is way too clean to be totally done on the spot
@@pmcate2 Makes sense, but the story I’ve read over the years from her and you can Google to confirm, they played the music that was used but she would riff/freestyle off the top about different topics with that same music in different sessions, so while they did use that music to do freestyles, the topic was one of many types of freestyles over that same music, but Tyrone was the freestyle that day. She says when she heard the band start playing the music, she knew it was the same music she riffs on, so she riffed. She stated the in many interviews that it was an actual freestyle, off the top. She was having fun and it turned into one of her biggest hits. Hope that helps. To be honest we will never know, I’m going off of years of her interviewing about the topic. You’re right though, the reason it has been a topic over the years is because people can’t believe it was a freestyle.
Erykah really had us out here belting this song out as kids like we had any personal experience with what she was singing about 😂 I think you would really enjoy her recent interview with Tamron Hall. Also, if you’re doing Green Eyes you MUST do I Want You and Out my Mind/Just in Time (both about a 10 minute run time). +1 to watching Jill do He Loves Me (Lyzell in E Flat) Live. Or Getting in the Way!
As far as Jill Scott goes, “He Loves Me (Lyzel in E Flat)” has some awesome live versions. Jill also has a phenomenal stage presence. The song Green Eyes by Erykah is 3 eras of vocal jazz in one song. One of my favorite songs by her.
Eryka is from Dallas she used to be my neighbor when she was with Andre from OutKast I used to speak to them all the time they were both really down to earth good people
My mother was well into her 80s and she and I loved to ride in my car on small excursions bumping the music of Ms. Badu! It was something about Badu that sounded nostalgic to her. She would tap her feet and tap her knee with enjoyment.
I bet it’s Erykah’s voice. Her earlier work had a more jazzy feel to it and her vocals were reminiscent of Billie Holiday, IMO. That could be what caused that nostalgia.
Erykah and Jill have the songs with the roots that is bananas! They both have poems on Def Poetry jam! They are both epic, theatrical, emotional rooted performers.
From my understanding, she wrote that on the spot or "freestyle". She's an AMAZING performer, and if you ever get a chance to see her in concert, absolutely go do it. Jill Scott is another great performer. I see her every chance I get. Unfortunately, this current tour is sold out at all the venues near me. 😢 The first time I remember seeing her live is when she performed with the Blue Man Group on one of the award shows. Its still one of my favorite performances.
I just saw her at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo for Black Heritage Day and it was 80,000 ppl there and the whole stadium stood and sang this word for word. She sang Tyrone and On&On , it was electric!!!!
I love Erykah Badu. This song never gets old! She’s a huge part of why neo-soul is my fav genre. If y'all keep doing live performance reactions, I recommend Jazmin Sullivan and Chloe & Halle tiny desks lives at home. They both did amazing!
Jill Scott has an excellent live album. If you only listen to one song, He Loves Me (Lyzel in E Flat) is the live song to hear. I believe Dad would love Erykah Badu's whole live album.
For me, the thing that sets this channel apart to almost all of the other 'music reaction' videos.. Is you guys authenticity. No unnecessary drama attached, just sincere. Amazing how naturally talented you guys are for this concept. I also like how both your comments never feel as an interruption. But always nice background info from Kai or new approach from dad. Everything just hits the mark. Keep up the good work!
Uuuuggghh!!! Erykah Badu's "Green Eyes" performance on NPR's Tiny Desk concert is oherworldly!! Thanks for reminding me of that. I absolutely have to listen to it again!!! ❤️ You should do a video reacting to that!
1997 was a fantastic year for music. I remember seeing Erykah Badu, Butterfly from Digable Planets, Saul Williams, Common, etc in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, where I was living at the time. And if my memory serves correctly, Erykah had performed at Ian Friday's Sunday Night Tea Party and she may have also done Tyrone there, too. Any neo-soul/house/hip-hop old heads out here?
I'm glad you did! Tyrone, I remember when you did the other song by Erica Badu I had mentioned Tyrone and I think some others did too, so I'm glad you did it
Playing catch-up to your channel. At 37, most of what you’ve covered I’ve been around to experience at inception. Watched about fifty of your vids., both emotional and fun, but for some reason you and your father’s initial reactions to “Tyrone” made me shed tears. Thanks for the content!!
I love watching you and your dad. I feel like I’ve learned so much about rap and hip pop from your videos. I’m black South African living in California, Orange County.
Love how much you both genuinely enjoy performances! My favorite live album along with Depeche Modes. I recently saw her live for her b day show in Dallas. Shes still got it and then some! The live version of Next Lifetime from this performance always moves me to tears.
The Mama’s Gun review was GREAT!! I really enjoyed all of it, even pops getting emotional on Orange Moon which is easily my very close second favorite joint on the album (Green Eyes being the first). What a thorough and thoughtful review for what I consider to be Erykah’s best work (Although ‘New Amerykah’ isn’t too far behind) and one of my all time favorite albums of any artist. Erykah is one of the greatest of our time. She’s such an amazing artist. Her first two albums could be considered neo-soul but on a grand scale, her music can’t be categorized. She’s just…different. And it’s awesome. One song I’d strongly suggest is “Telephone” off the New Amerykah album. It’s a song she wrote to and for J Dilla after he passed away. Beautiful song. Have your tissue ready, pops. I’d love to see y’all review a Jill Scott album as well. Words & Sounds vol. 2 or 3 would be great. Who is Jill Scott would be great as well. A totally different sound and vibe from Erykah though the same genre as Erykah’s first two albums. Still, great great great albums by Jilly from Philly. You won’t be disappointed.
Thanks for reacting to one of my favourite songs of one of my favourite artists 🖤 I got so exited, when she sung it on the first concert I visited of her, and I screamed like crazy, when I heard the melody starting. Than I realised, that it wasn’t the biggest hit in Germany 😅 Not many people got exited too😂
Both Erykah and Jill Scott dropped live albums after their respective debut studio releases...and both albums have standout moments like this one (Badu's album also has a studio version of this song).
If you can find the liner notes for the Mamas Gun album especially for “Green Eyes” you will have a new love and understanding of the song!! Mamas Gun is my absolute favorite…can’t wait for this
Jill Scott- It’s Love (Live) .. Jill Scott has a live album called “Experience: Jill Scott 826+” that is AMAZINGGGGG!!!! I love what you two are doing & please keep up the great work!
Cool review but you guys talked through the Grande Finale and most EPIC part of the video. 😬🤦🏽♀️ lol A suggestion would be to pause the video if you just absolutely must talk. Lol The moments you think are brief and inconsequential are often anything But. I've noticed you've started doing that quite a bit... the talking during the performance. ;) Please - just pause it even if you believe that you're only communicating for seconds. You killed the vibe... what we all were waiting on you fellas to witness as we did the first time. ;) Ciao
Yes! PLEASE do Green eyes 💚!!! That is my absolute FAVORITE song 💯. I also asked in the past for it so I’m excited to see your guys review and your dad’s reaction 💛That song gets into your soul.
