The Weeknd is one of the best vocalists ever, let alone just this generation. The super bowl is a tough way to be introduced to his voice I’d say. The mixing was off and that has nothing to do with his vocal ability. One of the few artists who sing live with little back track. It’s incredible to witness. There’s a difference between using auto tune as a crutch or using is aesthetically. I think older generations have a hard time grasping that. Though he’s a better singer now then he was 10 years ago, house of balloons or any of the mixtapes really will give a way better idea of the raw vocal skill.
Can't you believe this Album didn't get a Grammy Nomination and Blinding Lights the BIGGEST song in Music history and of 2020 wasn't even nominated for Song of the Year.
Honestly, you should’ve started him on House of Balloons. When I was first getting into Abel, listening to trilogy first really eased me into his sound. Also the narrative and story behind After Hours is really important to the listening experience. You don’t really appreciate the greatness of this album until you realize the story.
Love the reaction! I understand where your dad is coming from really wanting to hear his actual voice. You should have him react to the vevo performances he did of a few of these songs. He did one to "Faith", "In Your Eyes" (with Kenny G) and "Alone Again" where he's singing everything without backing vocals or effects. Imo, they sound even better than the album versions!
I’m a huge weeknd finatlc and after hours might be his best song ever. It embodies him and all his music into 1 song. After hours is just the first album to the trilogy of 3 albums the next one is DAWN FM then the story continues with the next one
I'd preferred Dad get introduced to Abel thru HoB rather than this to get more of the growth and the storyline itself from the mixtapes and Kissland until now but I'll take it! Dad mentioned it when he said something along the lines of this being the intro of Abel to someone else. Still, with this being The Weeknd's biggest album to date, it's not too bad. Dawn FM next, since it's the sequel?
I'll be patiently waiting for the next The Weeknd reaction. Especially House of Balloons! As a matter of fact all of Trilogy will suffice 😁 1.House of Balloons 2.Thursday 3.Echos of Silence Happy Holidays to all!💯🔥🔥🎵🎶🎵🎶❤💞❤💞
I really enjoy seeing your dad being honest with his thoughts and I have noticed that like with this vulnerability that the Weekend shows it is interesting how he is able to still challenge the listener in certain aspects of the music. I felt like since this album really opened up on this character that seeped into what is actually happening in his life over the past years it can be quite interesting seeing what your dad will think about Dawn FM which exudes confidence and clarity in a ton of tracks whereas the distortion of After Hours makes that far away feeling from people or people understanding what he was going through battling many issues as a known introverted person. Nonetheless, I am hyped to see what your dad think of Dawn FM that has absolute well mastered music and track continuation and vocal clarity and easy understanding stories in songs.
After hours is one of my favorite albums ever. I’m so glad to see you guys reacting to my favorite artist 😊 even if dad wasn’t feeling it much 😂. hope to see more Weeknd
It’s always ok to not like something! But isn’t it also great that The Weeknd challenges a listener? It means he’s doing something right. I sometimes wonder if he pushes his vocals back because he hasn’t had a lot of confidence? (I know he’s quite shy when it comes to interviews etc), I may be very wrong there- but through his discography I’ve always felt like he struggles to be vulnerable and he masks that with his ‘character’… but in this album he is so vulnerable and I wonder if that’s partly why he seems so far away… almost like someone talking to you on the phone from a distance... I don’t know if that’s a silly observation or not but it’s just something I’ve wondered since he seems so much more confident now and I think the new album really reflects that, I can feel his confidence oozing now.
@@putyouon 100%! Seeing clips of him on stage now in 2022, he has this whole new confidence and he’s enjoying playing with his vocals and his vision. He seems to me in such a good place, and I’m so happy for him.
This is going to be a very rash generalization and I of course mean no harm by it, but I find that a lot of folks from Dad's generation seem to have a hard time with music that comes off to them as "complaining" or "whining" about their problems. A lot of music from previous generations was rarely as emotive and raw about personal issues, usually more focused on positivity or social issues, or when getting personal a la Pink Floyd usually done so in more abstract terms. And certainly I think successive generations of music were influenced by a sort of infatuation with anti-heroes in our media especially in the late 90s and 2000s, and that definitely adds to a bit of self-loathing that can be hard to swallow for previous generations that just kind of want them to suck it up, shut up and just sing. But it very much echoes the divide about mental health between generations to me - with one generation often saying to suck it up (though I've very much seen that attitude start to shift in the older generations) and the newer generation almost being too open about it - like yeah we know you're depressed but you dont need to buy t-shirts that say you're sad as fuck or whatever, it's just kind of cringe. So I think Abel's raw open bad guy that hates himself schtick comes off as "Well fuck you have it bad but you didnt have it as bad as me" or "So what, we all have problems" to one generation, and it's "OMG I SUCK TOO" and "YEAH I'M BAD AND I LIKE IT AS WELL" to the other generation, so I fully get the disconnect. I think if one can get past that weird generational divide what you've got is a guy that both hates and loves himself and has the voice of an angel and the intentions of a demon and it's pretty interesting to me. And frankly I love Dawn FM even more because it's so much more nihilistic and so much more about our own mortality and the fears and regrets that come with it if you don't love yourself, which means it's about growth as much as it's about existentialism.
This was very well put. And I think you definitely have a point. I wasn’t sure why my dad was so bothered by the “complaining” or being direct but this could for sure be part of the reason.
He stopped submitting stuff to the grammy’s because of getting snubbed for this album. He was submitted for this album but they decided not to nominate him.
Your dad was not into the lyrics at all lol but ℹ honestly think he would have felt the songs and understood some of them by watching the music videos first or live performances he does
I would agree with your dad, even as a huge Weeknd fan, some of these are over produced. Abel needs to cut back and also let his voice trump everything else so we can hear him clearly like in BBTM or even in Starboy.
Your dad is a HATER! Lol I’m just kidding, it’s nice to hear the opinions of someone his age (no offense) because not everyone is going to like the music. But now he needs to listen to Dawn FM , I think he will love that one!
I'm probably the same age. I'm an 80's girl and my favorite artist is The Weeknd! He's an amazing artist! Vocals, lyrics, sound and honesty. Thanks for the reaction!
While i feel u explain things extremely well, near perfect...based off your dad making the auto tune comment i think u definitely should've abandoned this and went to HOB. Or really anything but this
Well, The Weekend's songs is not for boomers. It's a gen Y and Z music. They're not feel connected and do not care about the message because the concept didn't attach their realities. It's like a 30yo guy listening Kpop songs, music made to 15/16yo teens. Usually don't fit and that's ok.
Not true, it's how open minded a person is. I'm probably around the same age as his dad and The Weeknd is my favorite artist. I have his brand and signature tattooed on my arm. I love his honesty and with that voice. He's so expressive with his vocals. I feel the pain he's expressing and he uses the production to get the point across too. Please don't stereotype age groups.
Your dad has good music knowledge. For the record, on Scared to Live, Abel did not even know he was borrowing from Elton John at first. He and Elton talked about it at a Christmas party and Elton was super flattered. BTW Elton is a MASSIVE Weekend fan and they even wrote a song together that Elton has talked about. It may or may not be released at some point.
At the end of the review with what Dad was saying, I think he'd like the mixtapes given how intimate they are. It's dark still but really brings where the content of this album comes from. That being said, hell naw I'm not unsubscribing. This is something I wish I could do with my Dad, were he still living, so I get to live vicariously thru your content. Great work as usual, and here's to 100k in 2023!
It's tough to pick a starting point to introduce people to The Weeknd. I think doing it this way with After Hours first, if you guys go through his whole discog and your Dad is open to it, After Hours will hit so much harder on a 2nd listen after hearing everything else. I'm looking forward to seeing more from you guys!
this sad album because it represent Hell life like lot Drugs, lot sex,La life, famous and in Too late he said it we are in Hell, it disguised as a paradise with Flashing light and his come up day Goals is to Live in LA but now his Goal is to live LA and listen to dawn fm to understand more the Team of After hours album and it Trilogy After hours it about Hell, Dawn FM it about purgatory he cover art only can tell the album , after life is heaven or Paradise or stuck at Hell
i understand his first The weeknd album but to understand the weeknd as the character or world buliding or movie feeling story or Twisted or one of the best Production in music history with the instrument tell there story or The cover art much the feeling of the album first listen to Trilogy and Kissland
I think he would be a much bigger fan of Dawn FM, which I like a lot more than After Hours. More sonically cohesive and less “all over the place”, which doesn’t imply that that characteristic of After Hours is bad, but I’d rather listen to Dawn FM
This is not a good album to introduce somebody to the weeknd you have to start from the beginning so they can know what to expect sex money, drugs, toxic relationship and then you’ll appreciate the art😂💀
Damn pops dont like much lol first reaction iv seen was astroworld and pops didnt seem like he liked that to much and this is the second reaction and pops definitely dont fck with the weeknd 😂 hard guy to please
Watch you guys every day and I'm halfway through the video. Not sure if I want to finish only because your dad seems to have already made up his mind about Abel without really understanding his music. It's really a journey that you take with him throughout his discography, and everything makes sense once you understand him. But I do like how you pointed out that everything he does is for a reason because it's so true!
