I often hear from fathers about the power struggles they get into with their son, or from mothers who feel caught in the middle when their sons and son's husbands/son's father get into battles. In this video I explain to fathers why their son's get into power battles with them and how to end them.
These strategies are taught in Scaffolding Better Behavior & Self-Confidence, the ADHD Dude Parent Behavior Training program available at the ADHD Dude Membership Site. This is the first Parent Behavior Training Program specifically designed for parents of kids with ADHD. Learn more at: www.adhddudecourses.com

We have done years of OT, counseling & even did intensive in-home therapy for months for my daughter. I even have my own ADHD coach, and not one of the professionals has ever told us to stop prompting, to validate and move on when they are making noise or given these details on how to stop power struggles. Iโ€™ve jut watch 5 of your videos and took pages of notes. Thank you so much. You are right, all the things with teaching tools and techniques do not work because she cannot access her previous emotions to learn from. ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿคฏ

Im a single mom with soon to be 8 year old kid. I guess he have a severe kind of adhd. He has his own teacher (aka best friend) and his own room in the schoolbuilding. He does not want to be in the classroom at all and havent bin for most his schooling, except for arts and crafts and stuff like that. He does have friends in school but his social skills are not the best so its verry mutch about other kids who has to adoubt to his games. His a social high speed or low speed. What we choose to call it and do at home is coworking for are day to day life to work. Its verry important to choose your badles. What i found most hard is the surroundings lack of understandment. And there arent so mutch for him to do as after school things, if he isnt bringing a friend home. We have tried soccer, ski and scouting. But it involves to mutch of structure that he finds it verry hard and not enjoyeble. His anxiety gets thrugh the roof. So we do stuff together in the woods and stuff but i wont him to be more around other people, because he is verry social and i want to work on his social skills. Im not saying i know alot about adhd i struggle alot, but i dont want to show that to my son and im eager to learn more. ๐Ÿ™

I am Currently struggling with my 3 year old son. I have been trying to to reach for help from Edwin Lobo I first suspected ASD due to the red flags including delays speech Recently itโ€™s been a rollercoaster of emotions for the whole family my partner is mentally becoming exhausted my child is displaying aggressive behaviour โ€ฆ Everyday is like a battle physically drained canโ€™t remember last time I slept a good 4/5 hours without disruptions The family Doctors done nothing I was forced to register my son with another Family Doctors. Physically I am constantly tired and having palpitationsโ€ฆ I am worried of the system delays to have a proper neurological assessment and a diagnosis to address the real issues with behaviour therapy or prescribed medicationโ€ฆ

Thank you sooo much! Finally someone who really gets my kids. So my next question is when avoiding a power struggle I may let my child take out the trash later (as they say they will do) but then they forget and there I go again having to prompt. Iโ€™m exhausted from being the executive functioning for my kids and from weathering the emotional intensity over the smallest things. ๐Ÿ˜ข
@ADHDDude
@ADHDDude 9 ะผะตััั†ะตะฒ ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
So you have to decide you're going to provide them with "scaffolding" to start using their own executive functioning. This is covered in the Executive Function Crash Course for Parents series here: www.adhddudecourses.com

Oh my goodness! This is a whole new world! I've never felt more understoodwith my son. I'm certain I have adhd, and he does for sure, although he's only 5 and not been diagnosed. He's shown signs since he was a new born. How do we stop his worked up behavior?
@ADHDDude
@ADHDDude ะ“ะพะด ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
Hi Evelyn, the idea is not to "stop" his behavior, but rather how to provide more "scaffolding" to help encourage the behaviors you want. I suggest starting with the "Start Here" or "Behavior" playlist at the channel.

@ADHDDude 9 ะผะตััั†ะตะฒ ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
You're going to need to not give the behaviors any attention because the more attention they get, the more they reinforce the effectiveness. You also need to enlist supporters. This is all covered in detail in Scaffolding Better Behavior.

A couple of things I was thinking, listening to this very good video. First, if the child's working brain doesn't work properly, won't he forget what the problem was by the time you wait to calm down? Second, I've read some very alarming things about when Oppositional Defiant Disorder is combined with ADHD. It said if a person has ODD, they don't really care if they have hurt your feelings.

Hi I am an Indian mom of a six year old bo with adhd, he has been constantly on therapies since he was 3.5 years old and I have seen improvements. But at times his impulsive behavior is too difficult to handle, is medication necessary in his case?
@ADHDDude
@ADHDDude 2 ะผะตััั†ะฐ ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
I'm not a licensed medical professional and even if I were it would be inapropriate for me to provide medical advice online. Please see my videos about the long-term research data about people with ADHD who go unmedicated. For your son's age, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended treatment is Parent Training (provided through the ADHD Dude Membership Site) in conjunction with medication management.
