Skater Dae-Won Song talks about the benefits of skating in shitty neighborhoods. Hella nostalgic skate tricks from back in the day. For more skateboarding action, check out VICE's Epicly Later'd: vice.com/epicly...
Way back in 2007 Daewon did a demo at evo skatepark in greeneville SC and I was one of a few kids who were skitching on the back of his team's van when they were leaving. He was so impressed that he took off his shirt that he was wearing and threw it out of the van. Needless to say. I still have that shirt to this day, framed and fondly remembered as one of the greatest moments of my teenage life.
I never really got into the world of skateboarding, as I grew up longboarding. That being said, I love skateboarding as a form of expression and self healing. I am now in my late 20's with crippling depression, but the hapiness that Daewon Song brings me is insurmountable. I genuinely smiled the whole time while rewatching this video for the 999th time. It only gets bettter. Thank you for RU-vid, and Daewon. You're a fucking legend!
Such a cool dude! Talks about other guys the whole time so humble: being the first to show of a hard flip, and says some random guy actually did it. Not many people would say that.
But check my instagram... out or his at @daewon1song.... or @Stevensong30.... but real talk if he wasn't you still shouldn't talk to people like that...it makes you sound uneducated and like a giant douchebag....
One of my skate buddies in the 90's absolutely idolized Daewon. There was a time where we spent more time dragging picnic tables around, than actually skating.
Those picnic table parts are iconic classics. No apologies necessary. Anyone complaining is lame as fuck and should make their own videos if they think they know what's best for skating.
Hell yea I went to Alta Vista elementary and grew up in Redondo Beach. I used to skate Torrance High all time. Stoked to see some pros come out of my hood.
Daewon, I never felt line you ever fell off! I still show new friends the old Rodney VS Daewon videos. Sir, you are and always will be a legend until the end of time! Daewon forever!!!
The picnic table stuff is awesome! I would watch round 2 then go to the church down the street and put a picnic table down the 4 stair and 50 50 the bottom part of the bench. It made me and my friends feel like bad asses even though we kinda sucked. Thank Daewon for the motivation!!!
Daewon man I haven't heard anything about him in along time he was always his worst critic when he was always spot on with his skating skills, one of the best skaters in my opinion....
Daewon Song is the nicest person ever. When i spotted him skating in Pasadena years ago, before I could say, "Hi" Daewon gave me the biggest hug and said, "nice to meet you brother."I think we shared a bromance moment lol.
it's crazy growing up WORSHIPPING Daewon in transworld and random photos and not hearing him speak until seeing this. This guy has blown my mind for so long
I remember when Rodney vs Daewon first came out. Unbelievable. And then part 2, part 3, ... I never looked at his pic-nic table skating as anything lame in any way. With the kind of style and command he had of his skateboard, and the difficulty of the tricks he did, there was no way my friends or I could think anything negative. On another note, I didn't know Daewon had taken any sort of hiatus from skateboarding before the release of Trilogy. Man, am I glad he picked up that video part in Trilogy. His part seriously made had me stoked on skateboarding. Watching him skate those smallish beige ledges at that one school ... damn, man, I couldn't believe how clean and fast he rode. And Daewon, it seemed to me, was always behind the scenes, possibly someone who less serious skaters had never heard of. But those of us really into skateboarding always knew of his incredible talent. It was just a matter of when he was going to appear again. Thank you, Daewon, for being an inspiration for me and my friends. And thank you to World Industries and all of Daewon's sponsors who truly care about skateboarding, for making it possible for Daewon to make a living off skateboarding and to continue spreading his zeal for this awesome sport!
I never realised the thing with the picnic tables! Those vids with the picnic tables inspired me so much back then, totally got me back into skating hardcore again!
It’s so great that he’s finally known for how unbelievably amazing he is, instagram showed the world that Daewon is in a whole league of his own. He is and has been my favorite skater for a long time
I remember when i was little backin like 99' I was skating with my brother at my elemntary school and Dae-won came and started skating with us, my brother recognized him from the VHS videos we used to watch. Hes a pretty cool dude. more recently he came into the restaurant my brother worked at and gave him some prototype dvs shoes.
the talk Rodney said they had when everyone quit to make girl. Rodney said he figured Daewon would leave too, but he said “Well, I guess it’s just you and me Rod”
Other than the blatant destruction of property, why was there ever reason to give Daewon shit for the picnic tables? That was so innovative and mind blowing to my friends and I at the time. I saw Daewon on the Tony Hawk tour and he literally ripped everything in the park. From the huge hubbas, pads, and transition. With what seemed to be little to no effort. Daewon IS SKATEBOARDING.
----It always bothered me WHY Mullen & Rocco screwed up & dropped the ball with the whoooole Love Child team including Kareem & not having they're World Industries decks released in time.. -By the time these dudes decks dropped= it was 2 years later and the World hype has started to fade some.-I don't even remember world decks from Daniel Catillo,Spencer Fujimoto,,Jed Walters..-The 1st Daniel Castillo deck I recall was on Chocolate.~~These dudes were soo popular the 6 months after Love Child and people woulda been all over these decks had they dropped...~~~if I'm not mistaken, that summer was when everyone had Jeremy Klein vegetables deck,,,The Mike Vallely elephant deckB4 his infamous double kick barnard..-The Rocco deck with Pooh bear on it.-and of COurse Jason Lee's 2 bind decks. Esp the big hat on little guy dr.seuss graphic..-Maybe Jesse Martinez was in there too.. Not to mention the 1ST Gonz blind deck..~~But had the love child street kids dropped decks @ same time! it woulda been a bum-rush to have them.--As I type this I think love child mighta been 18 months'ish later and afterwards And that could explain why the decks never dropped in time...ANYONE ELSE WITH A BETTER MEMORY CARE TO set the record str8 on the dates...--Daewons picnic tble joke is sooo funny..i laugh everytime ---Picnic tables---Look how easy he makes grinding and doing disaster slides on the top part. wtf!!!at best i could just slide the top part...the only grinding is the seat part for me :D but i was never a high high ollier..---tthat love child 4 step at the end of Daewons line woulda been a huge ollile for me..i woulda had to 180 up it most likely I wish Daewon could KNOW how eff'n EPIC his infamous long-line to open Love Child..--He is SOOOO Humble...-That kickflip wasn't "LAME". it was slo mo and showed style & uber control. everyone respected that kickflip..-The whole Love CHild video and Video Days made all teenagers now focus on style. ===Daewon is also the only due who could skate to The Killers(when were young) lol
I totally agree dude. I'm 16 and when i first skating I skated vert until i got good at it. Then I switched to street and it without a doubt helped me get grinds when i switched over to street.
Rodney Mullen vs Daewon Song Round 2 was the first skate tape I ever saw. Which is kind of weird because I started skating in 1989. I remember thinking, Holy shit you can Ollie on to a table! That's insane!
yeah. Geoff Rowley..the main guy on Vans, helped Volcom become what it is today and owns one of the best skate companys ever in Flip. oh,he was also skater of the year and put out gazillion iconic videoparts. Haslam is a great skater, second best behind daewon when it comes to tech skating, but he still needs to prove himself. that's how I see it. longevity counts man.
i remember seeing him in the decka video (dont remember the spelling, i was like 5). shit was crazy, but after that i never saw from him again until almost round 3
vert can be a little boring to watch which maybe i think is why people hate on it.. watching older vids where it was a big thing i feel like it was very innovative and street skaters definitely pulled tricks from that. Really like how Dan talks about how skating is good for bad city kids. Love spike jonze.
I always wondered if he kept his tail truck tighter. I always have my tail tighter, although it can be annoying when you get it turned around for various reasons. But that's cool, I always wondered if it was weird to do that, I never actually asked anyone else for some reason.
actually to skate fully padded a wooden vert ramp is way much safer than skating rails and stairs in street, injury speaking i'd say vert is a lot less dangerous than street
When was his last part put out? Haslam and Daewon both drop atleast 3 videoparts a year and put out a full length almost video. Rowley had like 3 tricks in a flip weight of the world video... His extremely sorry part was mostly a montage of ditch skating.
