Dagger Stratos 14.5 down the class IV section of the Chattooga River SC. This section is known as Section 4 of the Chattooga River. I was so surprised how well this kayak handled on this run. Even though it was pushing the upper limit of the boats ability. It went very smoothly. I do know this run very well and DO NOT suggest anyone attempt taking this boat down anything over class II to easy class III but I did want to show it could handle this type of river with the right paddler in it.

The Stratos is the best boat I have ever owned. Amazing for long distance endurance workouts on lake mead and Mohave. Awesome and playful in waves. Amazing outfitting...no pegs. Playful and fast enough. Dagger hit a homerun on the Stratos, truly...and this doesn't surprise me one bit with a competent driver.

Observant paddlers would've caught the tipoff when Confluence focused their branding, allocating the whitewater boats to Dagger and the long boats to the other brands in their stable. The exception was the Stratos (actually, its forerunner, the Alchemy). Classifying it with their butt kickers is all the hint you need. Get it out on the Great Lakes or salt water on a rough day, and you can rock garden with ease. No surprise it can also handle technical rivers. Funnest boat since th Prijon Yukon.

I did class 1 maybe even up to 2 on the same river, it was my speed but this right here, you can keep it lol. I would rather watch lol. Good job👍

A few years back I paddled my Zydeco 9.0 down section 3 of the Chattahoochee at high volume. People still trip out when I tell them about it lol. You don't always need a whitewater boat to paddle whitewater lol. You could probably take 1st at the Green Race in that stratos!

I always wanted to know how a sea kayak would behave in a river, and you even took it to a Class IV one! As expected it’s much more difficult to maneuver and control and because of that it’s overall slower than a WW kayak. But I’m sure it’s fun as heck!

I tried my 15' Current Designs on a level 3 river... almost made it. Took a dip when the back got flipped and was jettisoned up on a rock-- had to be rescued.

Trying to make up my mind between a Dagger Stratus 12.5L or leaning towards a Dagger Katana 10.4 Any suggestions? I live in Oregon near a lot of rivers and the coast. Thinking 40% relaxing, 30% touring/camping 30% I want to learn and advance in whitewater paddling. Ocean would a cool option. I'm thinking Katana is what I need but the Stratus looks cool and it would be nice to take it easy, track in a smooth straight line.

Would you recommend this kayak for mixed river running touring up to class 3 and the odd lake/sea use,looking for a good kayak,50 years kayaking last 3 years 1000 mile a year but on a perception triumph 13 SOT up to class 1 rapids and 80 a day touring,SOT was due to replacement knees,but now thinking of a Dagger Stratos

With the rocker in the bow this boat it preforms extremely well in moving currents like off shore wave play and Easy Whitewater. You might not want it for those long 100 mile paddle across like one of the Great Lakes or something similar . It does have a drop skeg that helps lock it in little better for this long flat water days. This video is extreme for a kayak like this but it’s very capable on Easy class 3. There is a 12’ version of this boat now that is way more suitable for rivers and still have bulkhead with dry hatch.

Thanks for the awesome video showing what this kayak is capable of. I am thinking of getting the 12.5 for messing around riding waves in the ocean. How much harder is river kayaking like this, compared to riding waves?

Depends. Totally different skill sets in preparation, technique, and risk tolerance. Riding waves at your local beach is different than playing in an ocean rock garden in terms of knowledge, skill, and prep. On whitewater the length of a boat can have significant impact on precise maneuverability. On the ocean, have length is a necessity to generate the speed necessary to succeed at basic maneuvers.

Back in the late 70's those short surf boats hadn't been invented yet. We ran open boats, with floatation, I ran this section both ways, open boat, and an Old Town saloam boat. It was 13' long!

It's a very long, skinny boat, it's fast, but hard to turn, so maybe good for class 1-3 Rapids, but nothing more, so not for the grand canyon

I'll be traveling there eventually and will be bringing my "Jackson Journey 14" with me. I doubt I hit this specific spot but does anyone know if the Jackson Journey 14 can handle this run (assuming of course the Kayaker has the skills to handle this?) Again I will not be hitting this hard of a section but are there any sections a little easier that my specific Kayak can handle? Thanks in advance. BTW I'll be using a Werner Corryvreckan paddle which I absolutely love for it's torque.

+ShadowX011 this is a very dangerous class 4 section of Chattooga. I paddle long boats in class 5 very fast so had the basics of how to read and react to these rapids but I was still little nervous about doing this run in 14.5’ day tripping boat that would fold in half it shit went wrong. So I would say look into the upper section of this river Chattooga section 1 or 2 These are great pack in overnighter runs that boats like these can handle easily...

Wade Harrison Thanks I really appreciate the response. Yes I pretty much new that this particular spot would not be ideal considering I do not have much experience with extremely rough areas such as this one. I will look into the spots you are referring to and I would definitely love to make the run a night camping trip as well. I'm actually going to be going to "Park City" Utah this coming Spring to do some white water style Kayaking and thank God I will be paddling with a professional Kayaker who is also going to loan me one of his kayaks, lol...so that sounds cool to me but still...I would like to travel around your area eventually as well. 😎 ...I have noticed that most Kayakers doing this type of runs have very short odd looking Kayaks so hopefully I'll fit in the one I'll be borrowing...but there is always a way. :)

If your looking for a day touring kayak you really can’t beat the Stratos 14.5 it’s one the designs that just does everything really good I think it’s been in Daggers line up for like 8 years now because it’s just so solid and sold so well for them I’m surprised they don’t push it more. I have not been that Jackson Journey but looks like it good one also. I did paddle the PnH Virgo last year and liked it also. But if I had to choose I go Stratos first and Virgo second

Certain levels 5 falls section is considered class 5 but I don't think I said it was class 5? But the 5 falls section is for sure class 4ish but in a 15’ Lake kayak I would say it’s slightly harder one missed line and that boat will fold in half with you in it.
