HEADS UP. The 1.4 class packets are not reflecting the changes yall made to round & tower shields. (+1 AC for round instead of 2 and +3 for tower instead of +4)

Okay... The Mixed Ancestry is so fun, probably the best implementation of 'half-races' in a game ever. One of my all-time favorite ancestries in DnD is the Winged variant Tiefling, now i can do that with a Faerie-Daemon combo ancestry. This system is really fun, the wide arrange of choices similar to Pathfinder and the openness of games like Apocalypse World, City of Mist, Blades in the Dark, etc. is a combo I didn't know I needed.

Love that they are talking about all the fun stuff they have and saying they have to get the base game foundation solidified before diving into it. I'm at that point in the first ttrpg I'm creating and I don't think I've related to them more than that moment. I'm honestly super excited for this to come to fruition. You can absolutely tell they are incredibly excited to get to play it regularly in its fully released format. The art is incredible, the narrative flow focus is a breath of fresh air for ttrpgs, and the GM stuff has really helped with the few playtests I have run so far. I can't wait to see what else they have in store for Daggerheart!

The best way to design a GM screen imo would be something where i can slot in cards, just like with the player sheet. If i need survival rules at hand, i slot in that relevant card. If i find that i have always troubles interpreting the 5 dice results, that card goes right in the center.

40:00 - The way I try to run rolls with fears, especially outside of combat, is always to apply a minor penalty or make the player spend a minor resource instead of taking fear. For example, let's say the player is trying to climb up the side of the cliff, they roll success with fear, but rather than take a fear, I describe how the player slips for a second and suddenly panics, the adrenaline kicks in and they take a point of stress instead. Maybe the party is lost and trying to find their way in a swamp, and if they fail with fear, maybe they find a corpse and freak out that they're lost and it's hopeless and hence they lose a point of hope. Or let's say they try to open a very nasty door and decide to headbut it, maybe instead of taking a fear, I just have them take damage - reducable by armor of course. The good thing is that it's immediate so the player knows exactly what was the consequence of their failed roll, it's not something that comes in later and they know exactly what it is and can plan forward with that penalty in mind. If you gained a lot of stress throughout your travels you can always decide to rest early. This is really cool with Daggerheart bc there's SO many resources to use for such rolls, so a lot of it can be really thematic. Losing hope, or gaining stress are great for mental checks in particular, where maybe you don't want a simple act of persuasion to carry super big consequences, but maybe the person just becomes so nervous they gain stress. I think we've all been there in real life. But there's also physical resources like armor, which maybe if you roll really bad you just lose an armor point, or maybe just take damage, depends on the check. It is really flexible, there's pretty much one stat that you can impact for any situation that can come up.

@@emmajk7433 There was a comment on some daggerheart video a while back about the old Fungril skill that gave me this idea. Someone said that the fungril in the party used the mushroom network ability and rolled with fear and the GM said that their call was interrupted by the last words of a dying fungril, and that gave me the idea that yeah that is a moment that DESERVES to mark a stress for the player.

We had 2 ongoing campaigns where we switched characters to play daggerheart. One was a flashback 300 years in the past, the other was a mission that the original PCs didn't want to take. It was amazing. everything that happened was canon. (We play in Portuguese-BR in case anyone wants to check it out)

31:50 - You should really apply this to the Borne's too, because it makes sense for a person to grow up in more than one place or more than one type of education. Maybe you were born in a castle, but got sent to a monk order, or maybe you were a nomad originally, but then you settled by the sea or maybe you were a lord, but your house was killed and you lived on the streets before starting your revenge quest - you might be familiar with this one.

I had a 5e noble giant character whose family got toppled and ended up living in dire straits as a rogue, was super thrilled to be bitten by a wererat as a way to give him a dex boost for rogue work. Just as another example of the mixes possible.

While I do agree, I feel like it doesn't revolve around where you were born, and rather, how you grew up. Your examples feel a bit shallow, no hate.

@@egorsdeimos3523 Maybe it didn't come across entirely, but my point is that people can grow up in multiple places with multiple educations. Early in life they may have one then later another. For example Percy has the noble background from his early life, but as a teen he was living pennyless on the streets haunted by nightmares. You could make a case for him having both the noble and street backgrounds.

@@egorsdeimos3523 Honestly, you could probably make an argument for pretty much any combination. Wanderborne + Loreborne sounds really interesting for me personally, for someone who travels around gathering knowledge from all over the world. You can replace lore with order too if it's a more religious hermit type character or wander with sea if it's a nautical campaign.

On the Failure w/ Fear vs Failure w/ Hope issue, had a thought: What if the "GM Move" list was partitioned out to sort of show "Basic Moves" and "Major Moves" to give some space to what the difference between the two forms of failure response can look like. Then you can also have the prospect of "If none of the Major Moves feels right, you CAN just do 2 different Basic Moves" as well as "If you want to spend a Fear after a Failure w/ Hope, you can use a Major Move instead of a Basic Move".

I like the idea of the base being very abstract with optional mechanical varients. It allows for a "here is the core, plug in what you need "mindset. It also encourages homerules. "If I could plug in this feature, what if I do THIS instead"

Me too! Having played a fairly rules light system before where we had to do a lot of back work to get what we wanted, I prefer Daggerheart's rules medium take where the core rules are fairly broad, but there is still a lot of room for customization and flavor. I don't think it is for everyone, but I have really been enjoying it!

One tool that my table came up with (because we didn’t want to use the optional initiative rules) was an “on deck” area where players who want to act next can throw a token, almost like putting a quarter on the arcade machine. Then, when a player would next be up to act, the “on deck” players can figure out who should go next. It’s made combat go really smoothly and it has made it so nobody feels like one player is stealing the spotlight. It also presents a lot more opportunities for tag team moves.

I'm so so excited to see everything you guys are doing with this! I absolutely love all the adjustments you guys have made. One piece of feedback I would like to give is just the way the "updated" pdfs are formatted: there are a total of 49 updated cards in the updated cards Doc, but for some reason all the domains and subclass cards are all seperated, leaving a ton of empty space and making the pdf 13 pages. If all of the cards were Collated to maximize as close to 9 cards as possible, it would only be 6 pages. this would be super helpful just in general since printing out colored pages (for those of us that don't have a printer) can get pretty expensive. Thanks!

I am glad to hear you speak to the idea that combat should be dangerous. One of the problems I found with 5e was that it seemed like playing in the shallow end of the pool. Making combat dangerous increases the feel of the game as well as the sense of accomplishment if you succeed. It also incentivizes players to find a way to accomplish their goal without combat. In terms of the iniative discussion, and this thought come to me as you were discussing armor effecting evasion, is that perhaps armor could affect the number of actions a player could take before the GM acts as well as perhaps the action itself. By that I mean using a large weapon or casting a big spell might limit your actions.

I am loving it, and our gm kinda hinted that he might change some tables from other systems into dh (he loves the drama and thrives on fear generation) my favorite part is still experiences! You know how in some levels you get to freely add another experience? I think that maybe it's funnier, narrative wise, to have the option to (1) either get a new experience; or (2) get a +1 onto an existing one. I am playing as a bee-faerie-bard and I'd love to have my sweet lips experience to be naturally enhanced after a few levels (apart as paralleling be able to enhance them every level up)

So no magic boots that increase evasion, note taken. About those NPC moves, if they are Against the players, they are GM moves. If they are in favor, they could be resolved by a player moves, though this requires more thought. BTW, I love the way adversaries work in Masks, you could add moves into adversaries, and the mathematical part and you are done. Another good idea comes from Fate, where by creating advantages smaller NPCs could assist a bigger NPC. This could be modelled by some kind of action that manipulated fear for a certain characters. Or perhaps some of the smaller guys have an ability to increase the dice of the Main villain unless stopped, and in that case they should appear special somehow, or the mechanic should be disclosed forcing the player to make decisions between attacking the main NPC or the smaller NPCs.

Very happy to see Damage Proficiency (still think Damage Potency work better) get added as free includes at tier advancement. More freedom of choice is better. I like getting a 2nd feature for Human but a little disappointed that the re-roll is only once. It is probably the original intention, but I liked the fantasy of the least remarkable race being able to force succes through sheer willpower.

As much as I like the idea that tables don’t HAVE to implement changes from the latest update…but there’s a problem. Those who are playing on Demiplane have no choice but to implement the changes. The character sheets and cards are updated to reflect those changes.

The mixed ancestry totally came up in production meetings because of Laura and Ashley trying to figure out how a frog and a mushroom could be biological siblings 😂

NPC’s could have a feature where they move when the players roll enough fear or hope. They could be different actions and assist different people in the party to swing the encounter the default could be to assist the most social party member unless a specific story moment gives them a different favorite. Example the party has just rolled 3 times with fear triggers the NPC Beth to tackle the enemy closest to the bard. Or the party just rolled 3 times with hope so Beth now grapples the most powerful villain regardless of who they are targeting. Then there could be 2 different actions for social scenarios as well. Maybe also for exploring.

Both the idea of adversariea twaeking or robbing the domain cards and the idea of NPC specific moves are extremely cool and I really wish we could see some examples of them in the 1.5 version!

I've not had a chance to play it yet, but with the armour. Does it protect against everything? Or can something's bypass some or all of it? I.e. full plate would protect you against most stuff, but getting hit by a hammer/blunt weapon would still hurt. Still protect you somewhat, but still be vulnerable.

armour decreases damage coming your way. If an attack hits you (an attack roll is higher than your evasion), you can mark an armour slot to decrease the incoming damage by your armour score. doing so can change which damage threshold is met and makes you mark less hp

So npcs are flavour but have an equivalent to the help action...maybe they could have a "legendary action" a limited resources they could spend depending on the character motivation and situation, but nothing that could steal the kill...maybe reducing fear/ or party wide stress reduction.. Just thoughts off the top of my head while waiting for a bus so go easy on me 😂

Also, why doesn't the DM roll with two d12s as well. from a fairness stand point if you're using doubles is a Crit, that gives the players a 29% chance to roll a Crit and the gm a 5% chance as the gm uses a d20. On top of that, if you give the gm the duality dice, can't you also have a similar thing happen. IE, if the gm rolls hope they gain fear, if they roll fear they lose fear, or something.

I still don't understand what I'm supposed to do with Fear outside combat. I'm not going to negotiate with myself about how much Fear it'll cost me to push the plot forward in an interesting way. And I'm not going to let anything happen just because I have a huge stack of Fear if it would disrupt the story. It gets in the way - not helping.

Critical fails would be nice. Like doubles from 1 - 6 is a Crit fail. Doubles from 7 - 12 are Crit successes?

I kinda hoped Daggerheart would be more rules light... I love all the roleplay and world building it evoques, but some mechanics like armor slots and damage thresholds feel awfully complicated

I was thinking about how to make a “monk” in daggerheart the other day. Warrior with handrunes and I think it’s called whirlwind for your flurry of blows, plus take as much evasion as you can

@@demonhunter2310 warrior is the only viable method for a martial arts type character, but it’s still not quite right for it. Bone and arcane would be the domains I would give for it.

To be honest, Daggerheart as system it feels like great tool for someone who is natural gifted for storytelling. I have feeling if you give it to Tolkien to use it as a tool it will be amazing. Also if you split TTRPG in 3 section (Combat, Exploration and Roleplay), and for Game Masters that have more focus on Exploration and Roleplay this system is perfect. For me as in audience is so fun to listen amazing adventures and stories that Critical Role makes with any system and I think that Daggerheart is perfect system for them to us it to tell those stories. Now here is a but… But I as a Game Master, I am not creative enough and my ability to improvise is bad so I would like some system that is fully focus on combat. I would like a system where combat is so fun to do, that you can do a combat for hours and hours and still be fun. Systems that I tried so far, I always need to heavy homebrew. Daggerheart definitely have some great things that I will use as inspiration to improve experience for my players.

In the end they said this game should hold up over 10 Levels and over 100 Sessions. Boy I wish there was a format that has exactly this scope :D at this point it's quite likely that they will play Campaign 4 in Daggerheart I think. Probably after trying one or two mini campaigns with the system

What?! Do you think that they will play Campaing 4 with Daggerheart? I don't think so. Each CR campaing is 140-160 episodes long (if we calculate the 2 years in private of C1). Now they are level 13 to 14 in C3 and normaly they finish with level 17 to 18. I think that if the campaings would have finished with level 10 they would have felt less epic I think Daggerheart is more to short-medium campaings I think they will do something like Candela but more extended. And D&D will release the revised versions of 5e in September, November and February so If C3 finish with 140 episodes or so they will match the time and start C4 maybe in spring-summer 2025.

Please, please, please lower the healing hope cost level. Half of my druid ability is healing n I can't even use it as it requires 3 hope n I only start if 2. I now only hoard hope to burn up with heals n never do any other fun things. It also sucks burn 3 hope for a whole 1 heal. My suggestion is make the amount of healing equal hope used to heal. Spend 2 hope to give 2 heal. Note this is on a public forum so it is by law free to use. Please use it. Please

As I understand it, you can build an Unarmored character but there's not currently a good option for unarmed damage. That said, I haven't looked at 1.4 in detail yet.

@40:30 - A failure is already it's own punishment, it's often not great to pile on more punishment to what's already a failure. A failure with fear is already worse than a failure with success or a success with fear... why does it need to be yet even worse? Let's not get into the critical failure mindset, because while it CAN be narratively interesting, it's usually just mechanically a bummer.

I sincerely hope the final/release draft goes beyond 10; it feels very underwhelming at the moment, sadly. My tables at 9-10 are really not enjoying it-rather, they're used to feeling incredibly strong/versatile/ skilled/ arcane master at that point and 10 isn't doing it for them here. Which really sucks because we all really want to enjoy this; we're going with the assumption it will get more fleshed out and hopefully ten will feel better or at the very least, they add a few levels to add in some more power/ abilities. Or At least Mythic levels like the OwlCat Wrath of the Righteous if not making 11-20 the new 20+.

I love being able to crit, just like players. The ability to just gain a fear on crit is great. The insane damage in D&D that can be dealt in a critical hit was never fun. But giving me more fun fear moves? Great
