I have a silly question...is the pot tuber formed initially by taking a cutting, rooting it in a 4 inch pot and then growing that cutting through the season?

Hi Angela, thanks for your question. Yes! Exactly that. The pot is buried in and dug up at the end of the season, ready for storage. B

I really like your timing video. How many cuttings can I take from a regular tuber (not pot tuber) and then still use the tuber in the garden? I have already started a collarette from last year (smaller than a decorative dahlia or dinnerplate). It has at least two sprouts. I would like to get another plant but do not want to deplete the original tuber. Pot tubers not readily available in US. Thank you for sharing your expertise. I grow in US 7 but take pre-started dahlias to friends in zone 5 which has a much shorter growing season.

Hi thanks for you comment and question. Ahh you want the best of both worlds! You will find the tuber begins to slow down and put out less shoots as it becomes depleted. I cant give you a single figure as varieties have different habits, but you can probably still plant the tuber after say three weeks of doing cuttings. Once fully depleted the tuber clump will look thin and dishevelled and should be discarded.
