Daily driver, under 100k miles, under $10,000: lower your expectations

Today we look at potential reliable, available, low mileage, by-owner sub-$10K used car truck and SUV listings, but something has happened. The economy is so strong that beater used cars cost twice as much as they did just a few years ago. Is it possible to look like a responsible adult while skirting a bank note and buying a car cash off Facebook Marketplace in 2024? I don't know, can you fit a full-size refrigerator in a Honda Element?

As someone who for whatever reason loves the 6th generation Monte Carlo I will sadly admit that ANY Impala SS of that era with the 5.3 V8 is ABSOLUTELY NOT a car you should daily drive. The motors are great (but in no way related to the 5.3 LS in trucks) but the transmission is like paper mache when paired with the V8 rather than the supercharged V6. The usually only last 50k miles before needing a transmission rebuild even with babying the thing and since the 5.3 is different than the truck one it will not mate up to any other transmission since it doesn't use the standard Chevy SBC bolt pattern

Honestly what i don't like with the elements is that they could have just done regular fenders and i think they'd look fine. But it just looks like when they were making them they bought a ton of plastic fenders but didn't size them right so they had to make a fender "extension" that they made in metal and painted the body color so you just have a strip of decent fender that's body color and then just a bunch of mediocre plastic. If it was just the fender flares i would have been fine with it but these just look ok at best and even worse when the plastic turns gray.

Honestly, my dad's ex got one of those FJ Cruisers. Black, no roof rails. It was kinda fun to look at, and because it shared the same V6 as my dad's fourth gen 4Runner, I could easily point out one of them turning over. I grew up hearing that V6 start, and I will never forget it. Shame the front windshield on the FJ Cruiser was prone to cracking though. Still was cool.

Look for a 2005 Audi TT 3.2 with DSG. Generally, the DSG won’t let the driver run over redline nor lug the engine, so the engines and transmissions in these are generally in great shape. Tuners and racers prefer the manual 225 with room for bigger turbos and such. So, not being driven hard or monkeyed with, the 3.2’s tend to be pretty good. I’ve driven mine daily since 2007 and its still runs like a top.

It sounds dumb but finding imported jdm cars that are a little more lowkey like corollas, lower trim celicas, nissan & toyota minivans can be found all day under 10k and 100k miles, problem goes into would you be willing to do maintenance or hunt down jdm specific parts. Shit I would gamble buying that second Tiburon for $2500 bucks. For anybody stuck in the rust belt you can find some good deals out in the middle of nowhere Midwest towns, each car always needs some work but they're definitely not "soon" cars as long as you know what you're looking at. So far I've been lucky driving to the middle of nowhere places buying "needs work" preludes (using good judgement of course) and then I do the work then it's fixed and then I enjoy them and then they sell them... I still wouldn't mind getting my hands on another 91 4WS tho.
