Thanks for the video! I really enjoy seeing this truck and hearing about it. I spent some time this past weekend getting my donor 5.9 stripped down and learning a bit more about it. It's going to replace the 454 in my '98 K3500 crew cab dually with NV4500.
Definitely will have to keep my eyes out for you and the caboose whenever I'm poking around up north, glad to see you're in CO! Really great build and you did an awesome job elaborating on it in your other video! Those AFC modules are a great tuning tool for the 12v; just drove a truck with one a few weeks ago and was impressed. Very jealous of your rig to say the least! Would love to have an older conversion truck such as that
Hadyn. Thanks. I love my afc live. I can keep it tamed down until I need to pass someone and with the flick of a switch I can be around them in a flash. Its not a race truck but its crazy how much more fun it is to drive than the 454 was. Thanks for watching
Love your truck. I got a 1987 square body Dually regular cab 4x4 pickup I’m wanting to swap the 454 to a Cummins 5-speed now. Your truck seems to do very well.
I used to hammer down those roads all the time in my little Subaru Impeza. I had that daily commute from Red Feather to Fort Collins. Rounding a turn on CR 76 at 60mph and hitting washboards will leave your butt puckered up for the next mile or two.
Gear vendors overdrive, very tough. Years back I was in a money bind and had to sell my one ton 4 door. Never got to do the 12valve switch over. In the future I will look for another and do like you did.
Love the truck! I’ve got a 97 K2500 I’d love to do a 12 Valve/NV4500 swap to replace the 350/4L80E. I considered buying a newer truck to tow with, but upgrading mine and keeping some cash in my pocket is sounding better and better every day.
The GMT400 series trucks are one of GMs best! I will never get rid of my 92. Ordered it from the factory just the way I wanted it and it has been the toughest most trouble free truck. A Cummins swap would be even more trouble free. Gunna need some upgrades on the torsion bars to handle the weight but that would be so much better than a new truck with so many gadgets that always will fail at some point. Good luck
@@goingofftherails9877 Awesome! would love to see a video of your '92. And yep, I got tired of my newer trucks always having some kind of electronic sensor annoying me or prohibiting me from using all of my truck's "tech" features, so I was happy with my roll up windows and manual transfer case on the 2500!
Nice. This is pretty much my dream truck. I already have a 1st gen Dodge as a donor; now I need to find a crew square body to put it in. Did you cut the firewall?
Sweet. No I didn't have to cut any of the firewall but I did have to manipulate it with a big hammer. Pound the pinch weld over and beat the firewall up to make room for the bell housing. The heavy steel firewall is malleable but it takes a lot of beating.
Awesome truck !!! cant get enough of it.This is the truck these cummins engines should have been in from the factory.. I have the same truck with the same factory colors but in a dually and it has a 454 but fuel mileage is just not reasonable at 6 mpg towing 10000 lbs. trailer , I was gonna ask you about the gear ratio in your diffs, but you answered it in this video.... my truck has 4:56's and I was worried that it would be geared too low for a cummins engine at highway speeds.... Do you Think a GEAR VENDOR high / low gearbox would work good? instead of changing differential gear ratio? just curious if you look into this option . thanks.... looking forward to more clips of your beautiful truck, Have Great Holiday !!
KB DiStasio. Thanks and yes I have considered getting a gear vendor. It is a considerable expense either way to change gearing. Changing diffs is easier and is better for me because I don't tow heavy loads very often. Towing heavy with gears so far apart might not be too pleasant . Would be better to use overdrive set up but that ;means more driveline modifications and an oil cooler for the gear vendor plus the expense of purchasing the unit. I might just put taller tires on my truck and call it good enough, but I haven't decided yet. Thanks for the complement !
yes it is possible to fit a cummins without cutting the firewall. However I had to beat on the pinch weld till it was flat and then beat some more to move the firewall metal back into the cab just a little. The metal is malleable and can be manipulated if you have a strong wrist and a steady hand. Took me about 4-6 hours to get it right. Thanks for watching
Hey Mr. Hendrix, can you please explain how you fixed your cruise control? I am doing a Cummins swap on my 73 Chevy C30 crew cab and I would love to use the cruise option. Thanks Mate!
Samuel. I used the existing speedo cable that attached to the existing np205 transfer case. The truck did not have a tach so I ordered one from Geno's Garage that had magnets that I epoxied to the harmonic balancer and strapped the gage to the steering column
Off Road Design. Sent them the weight of front and rear scale numbers and what kind of lift and ride I wanted. Custom built to fit my parameters. I LOVE the ride of my truck now. Still caries the weight of my trailers but give a greatly improved ride.
The original speedometer was attached to my np205 transfer case. So it was easy ... just hooked it back up however is was a tight fit because the transfer case was moved back 4 inches.
