This is the best video explaining the swap I’ve found! Looking at doing It to my 74 k20 already a 5 speed so it should be pretty straight forward. Great video!
That's pretty impressive for a 22 year old. Must be nice to have that kind of power. I had a 6.2l with the banks turbo and it was still pretty gutless.
That's an NP205 transfer case, not a 208. The 208 is a cast aluminum chain drive case similar but inferior to an NP241, in the video you can see that the T-case is cast iron and it's an all gear driven case - no chains. I've had several apart. I believe Dodge used a 23 spline input gear or a 29 spline male input gear with a 6 bolt round mounting pattern version of the NP205 in the '93 and older cummins trucks (I think autos used the 23 spline and diesel manuals were 29, could be wrong). My understanding is that the 29 spline input gear will swap in to Ford version NP205s and 32 spline input gear Chevy NP205s (usually found behind TH400s and some later SM465s IIRC), however, the Ford and GM version were female splined gears. These NP205 cases ran a larger bearing on the input gear, there are smaller input bearing 205 cases used by Dodge and GM in earlier and/or non diesel trucks like the 23 spline input gear Dodge version NP205 or the NP205 found behind the TH350 or early SM465s with a 10-spline male input gear.
@@225mc If it's a 6-bolt round pattern version GM NP205 that should match the transfer case adapter on the Dodge 5-speed as far as bolt pattern. I think you would need the 29 spline male input gear from a Dodge NP205 and the 29 spline female coupler to swap into the large bearing 32 spline input GM 205 case in order to match the Dodge 5-speed 29 spline output shaft, assuming the 5-speed came from a Dodge diesel truck, if it is a 5-speed from a gas engine Dodge truck then you need the 23-spline Dodge female input gear that uses a small input bearing. The small input bearing Dodge input gear would work with other/older versions of the GM 205 with the smaller 27 (TH350 automatic) or 10 spline input gears (older SM465 4-speed manuals) use a smaller input bearing diameter that is the same as the 23-spline Dodge 205 input gear and a figure 8 bolt pattern to bolt to the transmission, but the bolt pattern wouldn't match the 6-bolt round pattern on the Dodge 5-speed. Those versions of the GM 205 would need some custom machining to work with the Dodge 5-speed. I edited my original comment above, as initially I had forgotten about the 23-spline version Dodge 205, so hopefully that is more accurate now.
your front diff (at least in this video) is a corporate 10 bolt. corporate 10 bolts had 2 u bolts on the passenger side, the Dana front axles had the u-bolt on the wheel side of the leaf spring, and 2 bolts on the diff cover side
We are doing a 12v, nv4500 swap on a 64 c20. Hopefully on the road this summer. Keep up the great work. You’re an inspiration to this old guy fellow Canadian👍🇨🇦
Same I have a 94 gmc with original rancho 4” lift it was my dads and we put a new crate 350 and new tranny but I’m feelin a Cummins eventually needing to go in there haha 😆. It’s murdered out too and de badged. Had all dents taken out and new paint job. Always been black tho
Hi friend, I actually just did a swap, 1986 GMC 3500 C/K. 1997 12valve Cummins, and Th400 with 205 T-case. $10K dose sound about right for the swap. They also have an alternator that’s just like GM 1 wire hookup made by PA Performance.
How does the Cummins work with the turbo 400? I have a 84 rear wheel drive3+3.…. Really nice truck with the turbo 400 and a 454 I'd like to swap out for a Cummins engine just worried about the transmission. Any info you could give would be appreciated thanks.
@@samstrucks you are absolutely correct, top speed was 55 with 33” tires, I’ve also deleted 6 TH400, I’m now waiting for parts for my NV4500 so I can swap it back to a stick.
Just picked up a 12 valve cummins 5.9 for my 1979 GMC 1 ton. But it doesn't have a P pump. Though it came out of a wrecked but running truck. I need to find a tranny and P pump now. Someone recommended an NV5600 to put behind it, but I can't really know for certain which tranny I want to go with?
very good video sir, I want to swap a 5.9 6bt, for a 1973 Dodge D200 adventure, do you think it's worth it, and do I have to modify the brakes, suspension? Do you recommend me? greetings
Question on the grid heater relay? I have an 80 C30 dually 2WD (wish it was 4) 1st gen cummins, 5 speed clark outa international.. Need all the right parts to make the grid heater work? Genos has the relay for 26 bucks and i have a big amperage button installed on the lower dash.. As Always God Bless you!!! and Thank you!
Watching from Dodsland Saskatchewan I'll looking at a buying a 82 Chevy reg cab cab and chassis 350 4spd truck... If I buy it it'll sit for many years until I get everything but then it would be a full from off full paint intercooler probably 24 so I can chip it but not against a 12 either it's a base model truck so I'd be going with classic heat and AC and then full power windows locks tilt and cruise 🤙
First off congratulations on the build....love it....my question is how is it holding up with the half ton frame????.... I have a 85 half ton and want to do the same but worried bout frame strength... Thanx for your time
@@chrishagemeister7384 Hey man, Ive got an 85 2wd half ton and I'm looking into the whole 4x4 conversion with a 12 valve. Does the factory 3/4 ton 4x4 front end bolt up to the 1/2 ton 2wd frame if its the same? Ive heard the easiest way to convert to a 4x is a whole chassis swap but is the 3/4 ton front end an option too?
Really considering a Cummins swap in my ‘85 Suburban. It’s a 1/2 ton 2wd and it’s already a Diesel. It has a gutless 6.2 diesel. I want to use it to tow my Camaro. So I need more power. What about glow plugs? My suburban has a glow plug harness the turns on the glow plugs, can I use that same circuit for the Cummins? And what year truck should I look for as far as a complete swap? I want to keep it an automatic. Thanks and great informative video.
Thanks for this video. I’m about to go through this with a 24v. How tight was it running the exhaust down by the front driveshaft??? Prior to watching your video I didn’t think a passenger drop diff would work
Great video man, I recently bought a 1975 K20 and want todo a 12v Cummins swap myself. Just wondering if you could drop a link to where I could find the engine mounts and cross-member, thanks.
Hey I’m just wondering, did you have to cut a new hole in the truck floor to fit the getrag shifter in or does the original hole work? I’ve got a manual squarebody I’m working with.
I’m looking at doing a similar swap but it’s with a 94 so I think the t case would be on the wrong side you know if the dodge axles would bolt up to the Chevy frame semi easily or have any other ideas also thought about putting the body of the Chevy on the dodge frame instead 🤷♂️
I actually gave up on trying to find a 4BT So I was just going to put a 12 out in my 3/4 ton Chevy Lo and behold I found a Box Van that was running that had all Chevy parts with a 4BT I had no problem hooking it up to Chevy transmission because it already had a Chevy transmission
Have a 87 reg cab with a 6.2 1 ton I want to leave the 5-speed manual that's in it here with Granny Lowe to be able to put a Cummins in there and leave the original transmission is it doable
Currently doing the wiring on my swap now… do you take all 3 wires including the ground wire from the alternator to the battery? Or do you take the two hot leads to the positive and the ground to the negative… thank you
I can imagine paying u to swap my 5.7.Its under 90k miles on it. Though. turbo400 rebuilt./crew cab/14bolt/Dana 60 front/205 transfer. New ac/stuff. Good video. I guess Alberta is on the far side of Alabama. I dont know?
Howdy. I've got an '84 Suburban, with the (dreaded!) 6.2. I'm gonna do a Cummins swap. You used a Dana 44 front, correct? Do you think it's really sufficient, or would you recommend a Dana 60 instead?
Hey Sam, I’m right in the middle of my swap and your video has helped me a lot. One question though. What did you do for your fuel system? Was your truck a TBI with the in-tank pump? That’s what I’ve got and I want to know if it’s alright to run the system as is once all the gas has been replaced with diesel.
Yep you’ll be fine. However I’d just pull the sending unit out and delete the intake pump and just have the pickup tube. And use the block mounted cummins mechanical fuel pump
Year before last we met 3 guys from Alberta staying at the same dump motel in Wendover Utah/ they were on bikes heading to Meheco. We was there checking out m/c speed trails at Bonniville. Really pretty /the Flats.Yellerstones nice too.
of course this is an alberta truck lol I'm on the fence about putting a 24v engine or a 4bt into a square body stepside and save the 24v for a different project. I feel like a 4bt would be more suited to a truck like this, the 6bt weighs way too much
@@zachdavis1776 Zach, I went with the 4bt. I am doing a S-10. I didn't have sufficient room for the 6bt. 6 is quiter, but your choice. Good Luck on your adventure
@@samstrucks yes I know that it's just most known don't mean to hate on it I kind of came off that way but it's a Chevy 6.2 Detroit's get like 30 miles per gallon and you can still crank power out of them if you need it
I don't know what the big deal with Cummins swaps in squarebodys drop some money into a decent later model 6.2 or 6.5 would be equally up to the task as any Cummins...you want a Cummins buy a dodge also diesel power in a half ton truck is not really that practical especially if you live in a rural area or where village and small town stations don't sell a lot of diesel fuel it can become contaminated with water or sediment which is murder on injectors as well as multiple fuel system parts...just my 2 cents
12 valve Cummins didn't only come in dodges, they came in ford's f700, busses all kinds of machinery including cranes ,I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't come in some model chevy.they are very simple to work on unlike v8 diesels. They are a great industrial long lasting engine that will not only outlast the dodge truck it came in but probably outlast anything it comes in if taken care of. Maybe he wants a dang good engine in his truck, nothing wrong with that, just my 2 cents
And how many older diesel dodges like pre 2000 do you see around? I know up here in Southern Ontario its a rare occurrence...you see lots of new or newer ones just because there much cheaper than gm/ford not because there good
