I loved this one! It's true, I get so excited when I think someone might be from Hawaii, but I don't dare try my bad pidgin on them, so I just ask. Usually, they're not, but sometimes they are, and then I feel so happy! A little touch of that aloha stays with me for a while.
Howzit Andy! I live da mainland 30 years now. Yah da pidgin fade but no worry, come back real easy when I talk wit da ohana or I come back home to Waipahu. Sometimes when I'm talking to da haoles, I like describe someting but only da pidgin word coming to my head like kapakahi or hemajang. One regulah English word no fully describe em. As a 50 year resident of Hawaii and a haole I love to hear pidgin. I don’t speak pidgin because I was not born and raised in Hawaii and did not grad from a local high school. I think most haoles sound ridiculous speaking pidgin, it just doesn’t sound quite right. I totally understand it though and love to hear it. 🤙🏽
Mr. Q aloha Mr. Q. I so agree... I have had the privilege of living here nearly 36 yrs. However, sometimes it just starts slipping out... not making fun... it’s like if u go live down South, pretty soon that Southern accent is gonna come out of your lips. Of course, Pidgin is its own language! Not an accented English. (Same thing happens when I am around Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Venezolanos o Peruanos, etc. Se me pega el acento de ellos. (I pick up their accent.) Being from Argentina, having left Keiki time to Seattle, language is truly important to me. Accents matter. Spoke English at home... miss speaking in Spanish. The pidgin was so strong in WA until my mom passed a year ago. Even my mainland-born son was all about the pidgin. He totally loved Andy's video and said that pidgin is his first language cause he's grandma's boy!
But Ey, me from one Louisiana Creole people kine. Ai know wha it laik to loose your language l’dat. Neva stop keepin Pidgin. Louisiana Creole people were forced ro speak standardized English during WWII. It was a decline of French (Cajun) and Creole. In Hawaii I am so proud to see people wanting to learn and pass down their culture. As an African American, we los our religion (voodoo), language, and culture. We truly don’t know what it means to be African, but for y’all in Hawaii, you still maintain something. It’s honestly inspirational and inspiring. Mahalo. Merci. Thanks.

I know that our Hawaiian Royal family spoke proper English and native Hawaiians generations ago did, as well. It was our immigrant great grandparents who threw English words together and annunciated words differently, so joile, we had Pidign slang. But its more about how we learned how to express ourselves such as describing a beautiful sky, we say it like this....."Wow try look at da sky nice yeah" ...not this way, "Gosh look at the big beautiful skies, its just breath taking." lol that would sound hilarious actually haha Anyways I could listen to you all day long because you make me laugh! You have no idea how much this helps me. I look haole AF but my step dad is full on Hawaiian, we used to spend Christmas hanging out with Pops Pahinui, he would let me play with his electric trains and my Tutu taught me how to throw net. I moved to the mainland and I get the same way, I am so stoked to talk to other pidgin speakers you have no idea. Sometimes when I'm cooking I'll start talking to myself in pidgin just to practice. I look totally Lolo but I don't care, I refuse to become totally haole-fied.

My husband was raised in Ewa Beach. We live on the mainland now. I love his accent and his pigeon, but he won't use it here. Unless he sees another Hawaiian. He will come straight out and ask them lol. I love it because then it's on. He gets happy and I get happy cause I get to hear the accent again. Next best thing to being home 🥰
