When I moved to Hawaii I was blown away when I tried to pull out of a parking lot and the drivers in the street actually stopped and waved me into traffic to help me on my way. That is never seen in the mainland. Then I learned that you must give a Shaka to say thank you. Again...people don't wave thank you when they meet a kind Driver.
Lol when I moved mainland I let car go and I had plennnnny cars behind me honk da horn. Da popolo guy’s face to this day make me bust laugh! He said wow! I threw shaka he went trip hard brah someone being da kine nice. Few years later I get no mo aloha when I drive. Lol
another good tip, always give the "shaka" as a sign of thanks. For example, when getting on the freeway, always give the "shaka" when someone lets you merge in.
We alla time let em in, even if need stop one big line traffic behind us kine. The road is narrow, and lines long, and somebody maybe sit waiting and waiting too long, so mo better stop and let em cut in. Only place I evah live where it's like that.
Mainland folks always mention how polite we are.....I always reply that I was well trained by the Hawaiian culture and it's aloha. Taking off one's shoe's and bringing small kine food whenever visiting, respecting others and all of the things that you mentioned..... These things really do separate us and make us recognizable ambassadors of Hawaii wherever we stay.

Many mainlanders deal with their unease by ignoring the situation, which is just what they should not do. Body language is important and can show deference to others. No need barge in, but can wait jus a bit for others to go, or for them to acknowledge and be polite to you and motion you forward, or go if they think they come first. Eye contact is very important, but can be double edge sword. Make eye contact, maybe a nod, and then use the body language. No stare. And when a situation gets tough, remember that eye contact is often critical to make one situation get more bad. No stare, but keep the buggah in sight form the corner of your eye. If you no 'see' him, he often can not make beef. So he stand there, lookin to talk stink or scrap, but cool down a bit for not being able to engage you first with eye contact. Also, if you find yourself in a place you realize you don't belong, acknowledge others, be deferential, and respectful, but hele on. No stop and talk to the most mean lookin buggah jus cause he call to you and get in your way. Make aloha's and keep on moving like you know where you are and jus moving through . Leave if you sense there is no aloha for you. On the other side. It is NOT OK to be disrespectful or make racist comments to people just because they are visitors or white, or some race you have chosen not to like. It is not OK to talk stink to any haole you feel like. Being 'Local' is not an entitlement to mistreat others. Who knows, the buggah you talk stink to may work at the hospital, or do volunteer work at the food bank, or help your nephew with his speech problems, or take care of your tutu at the hospice. We all live here. And we can be very different, but that does not change our love for the land and the people.
Some people are rude, & act stupid cause they don't feel loved, or think they deserve Love, & are unable to express Love. I'm Not Excusing Any of that behavior at all..When we Pinch ourselves off from the Pure Positive Energy that is flowing to us & thru us,...... U Will Feel All kinds of Negative emotion,& unfortunately some people act out. My brother gave me a Wonderful line to say to "certain" people. say "If you're Trying to Insult me, You're doing A Very Good Job!!" say this politely, & smile genuinely @ the end........... exactly, here on padre island during spring break we get a lot of tourists and they always trash our city ... we have clean ups for it, i can't imagine having that problem year round :(

My husband is from New Jersey/NYC where life is all about "me, me me! I'm more important! I don't have time to hold the door for anyone but myself or wait 3 minutes for you to decide what you want from the deli and I certainly don't have time to talk to my neighbor or let anyone pass in front of me when i'm driving!" My Mom said she spaced out at a green light...for a bit not just a few seconds...the local driver behind her DID honk his horn...but the lightest tap possible with an apologetic expression on his face as if to say "I no mean to be rude aunty but I gotta get to work"

I was waiting for you to talk about how when you're at da beach an da beach stay pretty empty wit plenty room fo spread out beach towel, sit back, relax an enjoy the day, wen all of a sudden someone else comes walking down da beach and out of all the places they can set themselves up, they set up camp 3 maybe 4 feet NEXT TO YOU! Like you neighbors or someting! Dat irritate me to no end... It's one thing if you at Waikiki or some place get choke people and maybe no more room but you all wanna enjoy. But wen beach get plenty room for spread out, no sit so close I can dip my chip in your salsa...or whateva. Whoo, I feel better now, tanks ah?!

I love this... I think the whole country could benefit from taking on the attitudes and ways of thinking and interacting that are part of the culture in Hawai'i. Mainlanders are too much with thinking only about self. I am a mainlander (Texas) but trying to think more like Hawai'ian!

I live in a place where the tourists stop in the street to talk story, as you describe, it is so disrespectful, I give them a few moments, then I go to the horn. My experience in Hawaii was enriched by getting the low-down from my kamaaina friend, who knew just what to say to me to keep me from getting beat up, a number of times. It happens so fast, that you don't know until it is too late. A tip, if you see the locals drinking and they give you the stink-eye, better keep going. All the best regards to you aloha!
Worked in Hawaii for 2 weeks. Didn't have much money and the Hawaiians I met genuinely looked out for me. The kindness of the people has stuck with me throughout my life and no place on the mainland compares 😮

This jerk from across the aisle--younger, able-bodied tall guy--stood up and instead of helping me, pulled his bag down, practically pushing me aside. An older local guy ended up helping me and said "Yep, das how they are!"
ha! Funny. I forget sometimes why I do what I do. Here on da mainland, some people in line like you said too damn close. So I take a step back and ba bam!!......hit em right? "Oh sorry, I didn't know you were so close". Lol den it happened again annoda time in the pharmacy line. Da lady behind me got all out of her mind yeah. So I yelled to the pharmacist....eh betta get her da crazy pills quick cuz she lolo.
Honestly, from a girl in Utah, all these tips can be applied in life. Especially the tip about an US society. Too many people with their mental eyes closed. We can all benefit from being kinder, nicer, and more respectful. Myself included.
I'm local, and it's crazy to hear how different it is on the mainland. In Hawai'i, Aloha goes round and round; it's normal and we don't really think much of it. But on the mainland, I've heard that politeness is rare and isn't really considered normal. That's crazy to me. #spreadaloha

I gave da shaka signs for letting me in da lane, other driver thought I was giving da finga, now days I just wave my hand to say thanks for letting me in brah. California driver are lolo/loco, love it when you give the shaka sign and the other driver gives it back.

Was just in Hawaii visiting my mom, and H1 Ewa-bound pau hana time stay hemajang! But, people are usually very courteous about merging traffic. I live/work in LA, and drivers here are all out for themselves. Almost no one acknowledges courtesy here. Sometimes driving here makes me all huhu!
+robetheglobe Drivers in Hawaii are probably the most courteous on the planet. Of course, I haven't sampled EVERY place where people drive, but the absence of honking horn and people stopping to let you in is incredible. Now I live in Fiji and there is simply no aloha spirit on the roads. Its a shame.
Holding up traffic to talk story with people is INCREDIBLY disrespectful to the people you're blocking. I cant believe I need to explain this but here we go. It shows you think your chit chat is more important than anything they might need to do, whether it be getting to work, going home after working a 16 hour shift, they have a screaming baby in the backseat, or maybe they just need to go to the bathroom. This habit contradicts your complaint about tourists acting like "we no care about you we only care about us...think about everybody, and not just yourself." at 6:30. If you wanna talk just give em a shaka and call them on the phone later.
seems these are common or 'universal' than just Hawaii from my experience...I wonder if it is customary in Hawaii to do the 'drivers salute' which tends to happen more so in rural areas here in Australia but for other reasons (less vehicles, acknowledging the other drivers existence a kind of 'half assed' wave so it looks like a mini salute lol). Other times and in suburb/cities this salute/wave is used as a 'thank you' mostly. Like if someone lets you into traffic or makes space to change lane or merging lanes etc or 'gives way' in some other way...you give a little salute type wave. In Japan I never witnessed this salute/wave happening but in a way they dont need to. Its an unusual situation on their roads. Main experience was in Tokyo and from a child/passenger perspective. Road lanes seemed to mean little, traffic moves very slow and stops a lot with cars changing lanes and on weird angles...everyone lets everyone have way. Very cooperative and polite traffic. I could call it very organized chaos haha. I can't ever imagine there to be a 'road rage' situation. Funny about standing too close in the post office line....this elbowing tactic used to be common with netball players.."oops, didnt mean to' lol. Tailgating in AU will usually result in the front car going even slower, slam on brakes or at least tap brakes (to make light come on)....think there is a universal dislike for tailgaters lol. Unfortunately the honk of horn has become normal in majority of Australia for virtually any reason or no reason....impatient! Except in King Island where the locals will joke that if you see another car at all its a 'traffic jam' hahaha (only visited there once. maybe again some day)...finances limit travel, huge costs and distances....such is life. Never say never, maybe I will visit Hawaii (visited Mauii in 80's), but I might have to buy a winning lotto ticket! haha Love the show, keep up the great work Andy! :)

And this one ACTUALLY happened to me: Mr. Young Punk was taking zips from my wife's drink when he thought we weren't looking. I kindly asked the waitress when she came if I could punch his lights out. His defense was "Oh, I have never seen a more beautiful woman, I, I, I'm sorry". The waitress brought both us a full new order and told him he just bought us a round. Oh, by the way, his mommy was there begging me not to knock him out!!
My dad was in the Navy and I spent many years in early childhood on Oahu. When I was a kid, they called me "hapa haole" at school because my father was white and my mother is black. I've lost a lot of my pidgin, except a few terms like "more better", but I haven't lost any of the manners I learned in Hawaiian culture. This video talks about most of the things mainlanders do that annoy the hell out of me (invade personal space, tailgate the car ahead, honk the horn, smell the food or make a face at the food, be selfish and not think about all the people). I complain to my husband about these things, because I was taught more better manners when I was a kid. My husband doesn't understand why these things make me so mad. Your video reminded me of where I got that from. Mahalo.
Not from HI but from the Caribbean & it's pretty much the same flow here to. That said, if you're fast lane get over not only is it the law but it's common courtesy & it's safer.
howzit Andy. here is the situation when I feel the car horn is appropriate (even for Hawaii) and one of my pet peeves. I'm at a shopping center parking lot in a through lane near the mall entrance. get plenty open parking stalls nearby. in front of me is a driver in a car stopping to drop off walking capable passengers on the curbside and blocking the lane. I give the driver the short horn beep just to let the guy know I'm in the back waiting on him. you mentioned in today's video that people should think of other before themselves. now, shouldn't that driver think of me and others stopped behind me as well? pull over somewhere else on the side godfunnit or park the car and let your lazy a** passengers walk another 50ft. sheesh!
Just because someone is "walking capable" at a glance doesn't mean they can walk long distances. I have to be dropped off at the entrance to stores even though I appear perfectly healthy, because in actuality I can't walk very far. You are not capable of judging accurately so it's much better to bypass the judging.

The only acceptable honk is the quick double tap when saying bye or hi or even thankyou. Cause sometimes the window no work so no can throw shaka but the horn does so double tap umlol

You know how Americans talk stink about the French? On our trip to France we learned that the French have much more ALOHA than Americans--a lot like Hawaii people. The difference is that French are more private and reserved rather than outgoing and friendly. Without even having to ask, French people would help us if we looked like we needed help. I loved that.
That happened to us in Denmark. A couple approached us as we stood on a corner trying to get out bearings. This is why everyone should travel; experience the aloha spirit from strangers.

I grew up in N.Y. My Parents were Very Big on RESPECT. I could never understand Most of the Rude stuffs people did. I've lived here Longer than N.Y. 37 yrs. I Love the people here, I Fell in Love w/ the aina though... words don't explain what my Soul feels about this Beautiful Island I call home,& All the Islands. for lack of a Better term it's Magical to me. I am So Blessed, The Beautiful people I've met, places I've been. and people I will meet,& Any place I go, it's been & will be a Wonderous journey. Always meeting Great people, & Everywhere I look, it's just So Obvious to me, Heaven isn't some place up somewhere,& can only "see" after we die. Oh No This Earth is Heaven!!! I'm so happy I'm not in charge of keeping the planet spinning in it's orbit. It is true u will find what u looking for. I Look for Beauty, Kindness, Wisdom, Strength, & well being. I thought the horn over here was mainly to get the attention of a friend you see in another car. You just tap the horn couple times and wave. And the door situation. Usually everyone is like oh sorry and move to same side and oh sorry and laugh and pick a side and walk. Also no forget to mention we get 45 speed zones where I got two tickets already. I thought the whole freeway was 55 too. Only H3 and going Waianae was faster I thought. But we get those 45 speed traps people. Be careful! And always blinker and say thank you. My dad never does. It annoys me. He doesn't blinker and he doesn't say thank you.
