Dr. Neal Barnard responds to a viewer who is adamant that dairy is an essential part of the diet. They say without it it is impossible to achieve optimal health.
Dr. Barnard presents convincing facts that tell a different story when he joins “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room Live.
The dairy health expert also answers other questions sent in to The Doctors Mailbag.
- How does the quality of protein from plants compare to milk?
- Do vegans have weaker teeth and bones?
- Is skim milk healthier than whole milk?
- Are dairy-free milks unhealthy because of added sugar?
- And many more.
Have a question? Post it in the comments or chat and we’ll answer as many as possible during the live broadcast.

I’m so glad to be free of the last tiny amount of dairy I was eating. Watching the recent Panorama documentary in the UK was the final straw! If dairy farming is THAT difficult, that they have to impregnate the cows, kill the calf’s and carry on breeding freak unnatural animals that produce huge amount of milk, with udders almost touching the ground, something is very wrong! If something is that difficult, changes need to be made. Buying from small “dairy kind” suppliers is not the answer for our enormous ever growing population of humans. My love affair with cheese is well and truly over!

YES, dairy is bad for me. Let me explain. I learned many years ago about the negative effects of dairy to my body. Immediate issues: inflammation, indigestion, and sinus problems, to name a few. Likely long-term effects: high cholesterol, heart disease, and last but not least, cancer. So, I made the decision to eliminate dairy, and remained dairy free for years. Recently, I started eating dairy again, for about a month. My body had an instant adverse reaction. Now I have stopped consuming dairy, and I feel so much better. I will not do that to my body again. It was a very awful and painful lesson.

It’s surprising how much dairy effects the human body. For the last 20 years I thought that I developed allergies when I relocated to Texas. However that was not the case. 3 years ago a suggestion was made to maybe avoid dairy. I went from blowing a running nose daily all day to not needing to grab a tissue at all. I was never lactose intolerant either. But I’m so happy to be eating plants and not ingesting dairy. That little piece of advice was a game changer. Very true. All this obsession about what is good for health and if you look at what makes sense, in the simplest terms, the milk of each mammal is suited perfectly for the baby of that mammal. For how fast they grow. For example, a calf grows to full size in about a year. For humans to take that milk and drink it, they are taking something into their body that is suited for extreme growth. On the most basic level it doesn't make sense. When you take away all the bias and all that. It's important that we have empathy for other beings, otherwise the world will never ever become kinder. It just won't. And there are so many alternatives. Why would someone insist on drinking the milk that comes from another species? It's really bizarre actually. I mean why not cat milk or dog milk? You know it's just a cultural thing.

I used to love dairy products and ate them every single day. Then, I quit them. Within a week, several, seemly unrelated, health conditions started to improve: breast and uterus issues, joint issues, skin conditions, stomach issues, allergies. I was healthy overall, or so I thought. I attributed my maladies to aging and environmental factors. After realizing what dairy was doing to my body, I don’t miss it at all; not even cheese. I see them as poisons. Many people, of course, wouldn’t believe this is the case. I didn’t believe it either; but try it for yourself and see how you feel after a couple of weeks. I got breast cancer 7 years ago, and was told to avoid soy like the plague, because of the high estrogen. It's in EVERYTHING we eat these days (processed food, like deli meats, cooked ham, biscuits, cereals, etc) so the last thing you need is to be eating more soy if there's a risk of bc such as a family history, environmental issues and so on. You may have heard that menopausal women are often advised to boost their soy intake for that very reason - they need more estrogen. But this can be a double-edged sword, so be very careful with soy!

I am personally convinced that dairy is not good for people (or for most people at least). But I have just watched an interview on ZOE with researchers that seem balanced and are quoting (supposed) good studies that say dairy has much to recomend it. I am good to stay away from dairy but for people sitting on the fence - how do they decide between serious and conflicting information?

I was getting vertigo, one doctor said it was a disease, mannier's disease, I read an article about dairy causing a fluid build up in the ear. I used to eat yogurt daily, tons of it. It went away when I quit dairy.

Help! Before going plant based, and getting my health back, I used to "run hot". Now that I have my health back, unfortunately I "run very cold". I also have Raynaud's, a painful condition that pulls blood away from fingers and toes when I get cold, which is all the time. I run a bit now, and my resting heart rate is about 48bbm. In the winter time, even a brisk walk isn't enough to warm me up. I don't hear much about this in the plant based community. Is there anything I can do to get warm?

Bragg liquid aminos have a lot of sodium. So, if you're eating whole foods plant based for high blood pressure (like I am) you'll probably want to avoid that, and miso paste as well. No need to season with extra salt.

Dairy is dairy. There's no way around it. It all comes from the same source. It all has lactose. There are many alternatives. I use a coconut based yogurt. It's way better than any of the other soy yogurts I think in my opinion anyway, The texture is thick and wonderful, culina is the brand. And either way it all comes from the same cruel industry, if you care about that some do some do not. As far as health, there are so many alternatives. There's no reason to eat dairy.

Cows eat plants. So if there are pesticides on the plants the pesticides will be concentrated in the cows and when you eat products from the cows, you eat concentrated pesticides. So you better decide to eat plants from biological farming.😉

Cut up Broccoli add to a deep bowl, Cover your Broccoli in boiled water, cover it. Cook your meal then add the Broccoli to your plate. The following week he told me he tried it and it was so delicious, he couldn't believe it. He went vegetarian and stopped dairy milk in his coffee & ceral.

Is nonfat Greek yogurt an exception? No saturated fat, very little lactose, studies that suggest added benefits over other nonfat dairy products.... - is it a healthful food overall? Is the estrogen content reduced by the activities of the yogurt-culture bacteria? And what about the probiotic benefits?

I no longer consume dairy and am a PBWF guy. But this argument is very one-sided and does not take into account some of the benefits of low fat, lactose free, or fermented dairy options in moderation. Diet is not a zero-sum game. When influencers ignore the opposing viewpoint for the sake of promoting their own agendas, I hold them suspect.
