Are eggs a natural superfood? Some say yes, but others say the breakfast and cooking favorite could even send you to an early grave.

Explore the science of eggs with New York Times bestselling author and nutrition expert Dr. Neal Barnard as he joins “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room Podcast.

You will hear what happened to one listener who ate a dozen eggs a day for year that left doctors puzzled and scrambling for answers.

Other Topics:
- Are organic free-range eggs a healthier option?
- Does the body produce enough cholesterol on its own?
- Are eggs unhealthy for someone with diabetes?
- Are eggs less healthy than bacon?
- Egg substitutes
- And more!

Plus, we’ll unveil a new segment called “The Power Foods Focus” ahead of the release of Dr. Barnard’s new book, The Power Foods Diet. This week we’re exploring the protein in potatoes and comparing it to eggs!

Great show. I am 67,a South Indian lady, and a life long egg vegetarian. In 2021, I discovered Doctor John McDougall and was amazed that he promoted starch and potatoes. Here I was eating white rice ( as most South Indians and South Asians do) and feeling guilty about it as everyone was saying rice causes diabetes. Soon I understood that I was following the McDougall diet except for the egg a day and dairy I was consuming. And of course the extra oil we Indians use in our cooking. Very soon I threw away the evil foods. How good I feel physically! I recently won the Bronze in the world TCS 10 k race.wirh a timing of 1 hour 9 mins. I do the 100 meters in 18 seconds I also coach tennis and teach piano on weekends. My 5 young grandkids are impressed. The only supplement I take is B12 Your show, Doc McDougall's show and a few other wise people are slowly making people sit up and realize that meat, eggs,fish, dairy and oils are not good for our arteries and bodies.

For those who would like to try tofu scrambles and who like that "egg-y" taste of real eggs, you can buy something called black salt or kala namak that has a higher sulfur content than regular salt. And that gives food like tofu the taste of eggs. Kala namak is used extensively in South Asian cuisines of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal as a condiment or added to chaats, chutneys, salads, fruit, raitas and many other savory snacks.

I recently made a great and super easy potato dish. Steamed/boiled some shredded cabbage (the bpreshredded bag stuff for ease), added dehydrated potatoes flakes and some soy milk and/or water, then seasoned with onion powder, garlic powder, and pepper (I added a small amount of nutritional yeast, but not sure if that small amout actually changed the flavor any). Hope someone else likes this. I left out the salt. But, if you eat salt, you may want to add some of that to taste.

I'm am plant based and have been for years, but I just looked up protein for egg and potato and 100g of egg has 13g of protein.100g of potato has1.9g. So by my calcs, pound for pound, an egg has about 6x more protein. Any takers? A better example would be to compare the egg to 100g of kidney beans which contain 25g (9g when cooked, so 1 can has ~25g) of protein.

@@AtheistEve Begins yeah, but doesn't overtake. Anti-vegan influencers jump on these mistakes and use it to cast doubt into the plebs mind. For a normal, say 50g egg to be equal in protein to a potato, the potato would have to weigh 300+g and you just don't buy them in the shops or anywhere for that matter. Think of buying a kilo (2.2 lbs) of potatoes and only getting 3 potatoes. You just don't see that. Sorry but having a science background makes me real down with the weights and measures.

I went whole food plant based no sugar oil or salt and I lost 65 pounds, all my conditions greatly improved, my gums stopped bleeding, and erections and energy returned. I used to have an appetite that was never satisfied; whole foods cured it. I no longer use a sleep apnea machine. Finally, the food is cheap-Beans, lentils, rice, potatoes and seasonal apples. 100g Egg - calories: 143 - protein: 13g 100g potato - calories: 75 - protein: 2.2g Or if you do it by calories... Egg (100cal) - protein: 9.1g Potato (100cal) - protein: 2.9g What am I missing here such that Dr. Barnard is saying potatoes have more protein than eggs....?
@MsTattygrass
@MsTattygrass 7 месяцев назад
He said a large potato has more protein than a large egg. If you weigh a large potato you will see it is probably at least 5 times heavier than an egg. A large egg has about 6 g of protein so a large potato would have more protein - just do the maths.
@McCaffreyPickleball
@McCaffreyPickleball 7 месяцев назад
@@MsTattygrass well by that logic... There's more protein in a large watermelon than a large steak. Watermelon has more protein than steak!
@MsTattygrass
@MsTattygrass 7 месяцев назад
@@McCaffreyPickleball I don’t know the protein content of watermelons just that they contain a lot of water. Most people don’t realise how much protein is contained in plant food and think they need animal products to get enough protein. However many people eat far too much protein which puts greater strain on the kidneys.
@McCaffreyPickleball
@McCaffreyPickleball 7 месяцев назад
@@MsTattygrassit's fine to say 'you can get protein from plants' But he made it sounds like there's more protein in potatoes than eggs. There's only more protein if you eat way more potato than egg. My point was... You could do the same thing with watermelon. "there's more protein in watermelon than egg" It's true but you have to eat way more watermelon to get more protein so it would be dishonest to imply watermelon has more protein than eggs. Watermelon (large) - calories: 1360 - protein: 26g
@MsTattygrass
@MsTattygrass 7 месяцев назад
@@McCaffreyPickleball You have to consider what is a normal serving. A large jacket potato with a side salad will have more protein than say a fried egg sarnie - both of which could be considered a lunchtime meal. If you are comparing weight for weight then of course an egg has more protein than a potato.

The Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score (DIAAS) of potatoes are 100 compared to a DIAAS of 101 for eggs: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7590266/ The researchers work for Avebe, but there are plenty of more studies. It's typically been found that a vegan athlete might need 10% to 15% more protein than an omnivore. So don't believe people like Shawn Baker who claim that vegans need 50% more protein. It's not even that precisely agreed upon how much protein is required to maintain or build muscle mass. Many studies show it's between 1.2 g/kg to 1.6 g/kg bodyweight. People in the bodybuilding community like to claim it's 2.2 g/kg, but that might just be because it's the nice easy number of 1 g/lb bodyweight. On the other end Michael Greger believes muscle can be maintained or built with only 0.8 g/kg and that the main factor is resistant training in old age when muscle is easily loss. It's a 33% difference between 1.2 and 1.6 g/kg, so this is a much greater margin than the excess protein requirements of a vegan. Here's a study on athletes: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6950041/

I still miss egg sometimes - like the crackle of a sunny side up, but I guess that's what rice paper's for. No one talks about this, but if I didn't brush my teeth in the morning and ate egg - my gums would start bleeding. Actually they might've bled even if I did brush my teeth and eat eggs, but if I eat carrots or greens - no problem like this! These animal products, especially dairy - put so many germs and proteins in your mouth to get cavities and all sorts of diseases (well gluten too). Clean foods like carrots and celery scrub your teeth clean. Bacteria feeds on fat, and people just don't about that - because a high amount of fat tends to be antimicrobial, but eggs are well documented to be carriers of diseases like salmonella!
