There are players on all NFL teams. They can all be held accountable. What can’t be disputed is Dallas does not spend on free agents that can get you over the hump. If you know you have a qb that struggles in playoff games, why walk into playoff games and say “we will go as far as you take us”? Two of the last 3 years the cowboys lost to the 49ers. The other year they lost to green bay who runs the 49ers offensive scheme. You would hope Dallas could put together a defense and offense through draft and free agency to compete with that, but they walk in and say we’re good enough and expect Dak to be the difference. Aaron has a contract through the 2025 season. Dak's not going to sign and sit on the bench for 1-year, maybe? What if Aaron wants to play more and he's playing good. They will eat $49M in dead money if they cut Aaron too.
If Dak holds out until 2025. Here are the teams that might have a chance in signing him. Raiders - Gardner Minshew has one year left, so push him to backup. However, at this point they only have $24.4M in cap space in 2025 and $115.9M in 2026, so a $60+M deal is going to be tough. Saints - Derek Carr contract expires in 2026 with a dead money pre 6/1 cut pf $50.1M and post 6/1 is $21.5M. The Saints 2025 cap space is ($91.6M) and $24.3M in 2026. So a $60+M deal is going to be tough. Steelers - Russell Wilson contract expires in 2024. They will have $78.1M in cap space in 2025. This is best spot for a huge contract...$60+M Seahawks - Geno Smith contract expires in 2025. Their cap space in 2025 is ($25.5M) and $160.5M in 2026. Cutting Geno Smith dead money pre and post 6/1 is $13.5M. So a $60+M deal is going to be tough. The Raiders would be a great spot. He will have another great receiver to throw to Adams, but they will have to structure the deal that gets backloaded with hope that salary cap keeps going up. I don't think he would go to the Saints because they are still in rebuilding stage. Seahawks would be tough for the money, but with a new young defensive minded head coach, would this be the best spot for him, not sure. Steelers can pay him, Russell Wilson won't be resigned, unless he has an MVP season takes them to the playoffs, than Dak is out of the running there. All of the other teams have elite/great/recent draft pick QB's signed recently or have a few years left that the dead money would be large, but anything is possible if one of these teams really likes Dak is willing to cut their elite/great/recent draft pick QB and take a large dead money cap hit for a few years. Finally, Dallas will have $64.6M in cap space in 2025 and $179.5M in 2026 to resign him. Yes, they still need to sign Ceedee and Micah, which they can. Also, Dallas gives him the best chance to get to the Super Bowl instead of those other potential teams.
