Dale Brown vs Ramsey Dewey... my response

Ramsey Dewey

A while back I did a video colaboration with Chewjitsu testing out some questionable grappling techniques from the infamous Detroit Urban Survival Training. Watch the video here: • Chewjitsu & Ramsey Dew...
And follow Chewjitsu here: / chewjitsu
And Dale Brown of D.U.S.T. fame responded with a comment so long that it challenged the character length of the RU-vid comments section.
This is my reply to Dale’s open letter.

Myself and Tom Deblass both offered for him to meet at a neutral location. Tom offered him $50k to spar with a female student of his. I offered to pay for his flight, hotel and food to meet at a neutral location. Seems his response was to block both of us. The offers still stand and we could find a way to get you flown out as well when that’s possible if he’s down 🤷🏻‍♂️ He also has restricted all comments on his Instagram, will deleted negative comments and will block a lot of people who issue legit offers to meet up. He picks and chooses who he’s willing to meet with in order to make himself look better. He literally tried to hurt Kenji then bragged about it when Kenji was literally allowing him to demonstrate a technique with no resistance. It was not sparring and he was bragging online like it was some kind of victory 🤦‍♂️

Yep. I saw the videos with Kenji. That was just disgusting to see. It’s one thing to be a goofy meme-worthy self defense guy on the internet, but another entirely to abuse people like that. Dale will never agree to step on the mat with any of Tom’s students, but I love the fact that you guys put the offer on the table and put your money where your mouth is. Thanks for stopping by Rob!

I’m a felon and did 5 years in federal prison, my story’s 50 pages in the book Dopesick that’s now a tv show with Michael Keaton. I was on bond for two years in which I trained at a kenpo karate school that was mostly self defense sequences and you always heard “street vs sport.” I trained 4 hours a day 6 days a week, I knew I’d probably have to fight in prison so it was a priority (I also took a college corrections class while on bond). We did VERY basic grappling 2 days a month, and sparring once every other month. In prison when self defense sequences that were “street lethal” didn’t work, the basic grappling did! Every time! I read Geoff Thompson’s books about his realization that karate wasn’t enough so he started boxing and judo. He called judo martial arts best kept secret. Today I’m a brown belt under Egyptian Olympian Tarek Moneir who coached the USA judo team, a blue belt under world champion Paulo Santana, and box with Scott Sigmon. Pressure tested sparring arts are what work, NOT bs self defense sequences. I trained at two locations the kenpo teacher had, each was open 3 days a week, so I got 4 years of training in 2 years. I also powerlift (check my channel, over 500 on deadlift) so I’m not an incompetent weakling, half speed self defense sequences simply did NOT work while grappling did BECAUSE we actually rolled (sparred) when we did it monthly. In a life of dealing almost all fights I’ve been in and seen have been one on one. In prison 99% were. Fights are chaotic, usually a few punches and then as soon as someone gets hit they end up in a clinch and from there a quarter of the time it ends on the ground. Today I train judo/bjj twice 4 days a week 2 hours each session and once 3 days weekly 2 hours each of those days. Training has kept me clean and off heroin since April 9th 2010. I do work with addicts and kids today, life is good. I actually help teach law enforcement in judo, I’ve been doing it for 5 years and made it my life along with bjj and boxing and although not an expert I know enough to help assist and pass it on some helpful information. I know about violence, I’ve seen a lot of it and been in a handful of situations myself. It’s amazing the mcdojo “for da streetz” thing is still actually a thing!

I like Muay Thai, and actually have been grinding a broom stick down my shin daily for a decade (one thing the karate mcdojo got me doing). I practice kicks, but in actual fights I’ve been in the balance on different surfaces I mostly wouldn’t have felt comfortable throwing a kick. @@astrosherlock374 haha, it’d be cool to train with you too bud! I’m not on the level to be a coach yet, but I’m pretty good at assisting people in class. I’m not a natural, but I work harder than most and train twice as much as most. When I mess up a technique a thousand times before understanding it it’s actually helpful once I do understand it, because at that point I know all common mistakes most people make and can articulate exactly what each limb does and how to turn which way. I think one day I’ll be a good coach, that’s the plan and dream! Self defense schools in general are a joke, but if you combine a few legitimate combat sports arts and do regular sparring I think it’s possible to make something that would help people learn how to fight quicker. Geoff Thompson really did well combining what was useful from his karate training with boxing and judo, great instructionals ALL available on RU-vid! They’re old, but some of the best for actual real self defense.

Your have is easily opened and in fact you cannot hold your self up on a chin up bar using your hands, you can be pulled down very easily. The hand to hand skills you show in your videos would not work in reality, and exactly NONE of the (alleged) successes of your organisation can be attributed to them. I've also received the "you're taking away people's hope that they can defend themselves" argument, and I truly don't understand it. There are two things that really break this argument down. First, isn't telling people that a bad technique won't work, and might get them hurt, better than giving people FALSE hope and confidence in techniques? And secondly, telling people that bad techniques don't work is not the same as saying that there are NO techniques which will work, these people act as if by pointing out their bad techniques you're also forbidding any alternative techniques be practiced. And as you mentioned, you've always advocated that people should get out there and train themselves, test what they learn until they find what works for them. Sorry you had to have Dale flood your comments section with those, but thanks for giving a thoughtful, well-structured response to it.

To my eyes, it translates to "you ruined the party". You know, the "hope to defend". Like lyrics of a power metal song (ew). It's a bit of a pitiful state but, at that point, I don't think there's turning back. It reminds me of mild protests in my University, where some weird people group kind of on their own but also somewhat loud, an odd mix, and they bark in a slow and pitiful manner like a drunk dog. I used to find it "inappropriate" but today I find it sad. Like I want to help these people. And yes they praise their holy political techniques and whoever goes against them... The same as the self defense techniques. Whoever goes against them ruins the party!

@@DetroitThreatManagementCenter Even assuming your guys really do go out and beat up ne'er-do-wells, it doesn't mean the particular techniques that Dewey criticized are functional. Just like in the curriculums of many systems and styles, there may be some good stuff and some bad stuff. If someone is taught basic boxing, and then to back flip in response to a push and fire off a chi ball in retaliation, and they later win a fight, guess which strategy I think they used, the boxing or the chi ball? It's entirely possible that your hand to hand training has plenty of useful techniques and viable tactics that you convey to various officers. It's equally possible that, figuratively, among any hits you score in your curriculum, there will also be misses. There is no perfect, infallible system, and bad techniques do exist. To claim otherwise would be the true pontification. Oh, and while I have your attention (never thought this would happen!), even if they're not your most advanced students, you probably shouldn't be letting these guys get the idea that you should have your opponent fall over your tucked knees in Yoko Wakare: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FalM0ZlBfRM.html It also would probably help to get a more solid grip on the opponent before dropping yourself to the floor. Furthermore, if done properly, they'll actually be rolling over your chest, not your knees. Also, I have noticed that all stupid people are sickies, so they like to be sadistic. And because they are sickies, they don't take well to criticism. As someone whose been in more "street fights", than is reasonable here is my input.... fighting is fast, brutal and usually very clumsy. Even trained fighters tend to fail to implement "technique". It's best to avoid a situation where violence may occur. 2nd best to flee or give them what they want., the 3rd option is to grab a force multiplier, and bluff. Lastly to fight. If you fight, know you will be frightened or angry. Probably both. The blood pumping through your muscles and the adrenaline in your brain will make you clumsy. It will come down to whoever is more aggressive and better armed. Dale's videos are useless, and Ramsey is wise enough not to pretend MMA experience makes him batman. One more point violence does something to you.. all my youthful violence is still carried with me. I am a Adreline junkie, I have anger issues, ptsd, nightmares, intense guilt ect. It destroyed my marriage, not because I was violent toward my family but because they couldn't handle the anxiety depression cycles that were a direct result of my violent past. @@joeberger3441 Yeah that's why I said: "tend to". There have been cases where boxers and MMA fighters have done well when attacked. But these are actual competitors with several fights under their belts. They were probably also involved in brawling before converting to fighting. Just as many pros have been mugged or involved in a home invasion and not been unable to respond appropriately. Here is my experience. The other day working the rough side of downtown Houston. I stop at a gas station where half a dozen men are going about their business. However, two men are involved in a violent altercation. One clearly homeless man is slapping around another homeless man in a wheelchair. The men several carrying concealed weapons (This is a safe assumption in texas) instead of intervening suddenly find somewhere else to be... Because the scene made them uncomfortable, they didn't know how to respond... And they shouldn't really. All I did was walk by and say " HEY!! stop that" problem solved. Because I understand violence better. That type of indecision is magnified 100x when you the target of the violence. I could tell stories all day but if you haven't lived a life where violence was normal, it's hard to explain... And I don't know how to do it without coming across like a want to be a tough guy... I like fighting, not just the technical side of it... I like the feeling of power I have when breaking another person... But I also hate that I like it. A took a job as a meter reader when I was young, and have survived uncountable dog attacks. I have scars on my hands and face from being attacked by two great Danes. I very easily could have died.... I enjoyed every moment of it. And I feel guilt, deep remorseful guilt for feeling that way. The kinda guilt that keeps you up at night, and makes you cry without knowing why... I haven't been in a fight in ten years, im practicing pacifism, but even the chance of violence makes my heart race makes me feel alive, and makes me feel dirty inside... MMA won't prepare you to be the type of person that survived multiple violent situations, and that's a good thing. Pray you never become that kind of person. I rarely comment twice, but this video had the gears in my brain turning, trying to be fair and impartial. I come across guitar players that say, "yeah, but he is technical, so he can't shred." A technical guitar player is technical, because they know theory very well, they know every scale, every chord, every technique. Dale, basically is doing the same thing: Saying that a highly trained combat fighters would be lacking in a street situation is the same as saying that a technical guitarists can't shred. Very illogical and I hope that he is just being defensive at the moment and not really separating from logic.
@markb6679

You are confusing technique and knowledge of theory when it comes to guitar playing. A musician could be technically excellent whilst not knowing what a chord is. "Shredding" is not a quantifiable element of guitar playing; it's just a vulgar metaphor. What you refer to as shredding requires good technical ability but does not require very much knowledge of musical theory. None of this is my fault. :)

The context of security work tends to be very different from civilian self defense. Security and law enforcement rely heavily on teamwork. Whenever possible, they want to subdue an individual with the help of as many of people as they can. Even bad techniques will work if there's 3 of you going after one guy. So having successfully subdued individuals with a team really has no relevance to an ordinary citizen looking for advice on how to fight in self-defense. Fun story for people who believe in disarm techniques against firearms. I was 24 and working for bikers in a weed grow house. After a year the relationship went sour and when I went to get my final pay after our last crop they decided to put a scare and beating into me first. Walked in the house turned around and got sucker punched right in the mouth, guy's ring left a decent scar you can see when I shave. As I took the shot I reeled forward ready to counter, then the 9mm came out of his little paper bag. I froze instantly with my hands up, was ushered to the basement by his goon and promptly threw myself down the stairs so the enforcer wouldn't have the chance. Boss man bolted down after me and shoved the pistol into my mouth screaming and yelling. After having my face slapped around and my ribs kicked in from the 6"4 245 lbs kickboxer, boss man held the pistol to my knee and told me I would never walk straight again. 6 hours went by that felt like an eternity. Thousands of thoughts went through my head and not one of them was thinking it would be possible to disarm the weapon and escape using Steven Seagal level bullshit. However staying calm and complying was incredibly easy and got me out of their with minimal damage.

Something I've learned as I got older (34 now, so plenty of learning left!) is that experts often stop learning so can have outdated knowledge. I had surgery this week and taught the consultant who did it all about the specific condition. It wasn't new to him in terms of seeing the thing, hence he was happy to operate, but he wasn't aware of the latest information and the classification of exactly what it was because the definitive paper on that had only come out recently. Good doctors (which he was/is) do tend to stay roughly up to date, but in other fields I've often seen people not do that. It may well be that they're using skills and knowledge that was 100% correct at the time. Hopefully the familiarity of younger generations to the internet will reduce this issue, but I suspect it'll still be common- so many people still drive with their hands at 10/2 and shuffle the wheel...

At rest it's balanced but even the tiniest movement changes the balance in the system, whereas 9/3 gives a straight line through the pivot which means it's always perfectly balanced no matter how you turn the wheel. Also, wheels are designed for that so it's comfier anyway (and doesn't involve holding your arms up as much). I have A LOT of respect for Dale's security company, which very pointedly emphasizes deescalation and careful selection of personnel over violence. So, it makes me sad to see him presenting himself as an ultra-macho tough guy on the internet. Maybe he needs the cash that comes from internet notoriety? (I wrote this part before the 20ish-minute mark where you presented the same conjecture) As a point of clarification, from what I understand, most of his security is actually UNARMED, with the goal being that NO ONE gets hurt (including the "bad guy"). So, with the emphasis on deescalation, I imagine his training is very effective at creating self confidence in his students, which can be a very strong deterrent to acts of violence when paired with sound judgement. I think he understands that the self confidence he gives to people is the most valuable part of his training (for better or worse), and that's why he's so protective of the training, and repeatedly alludes to the trust his students have in it, regardless of its actual effectiveness in a fight.
@bw5020
@bw5020 2 года назад
I felt the same way almost verbatim. Deescalation is another tool of self defense. But it's disheartening to see him act a fool. He's projecting and self aggrandizing when it ain't necessary. :(

A "contrived situation": one in which one side often holds all the cards, but presents it as balanced to the victim*. It's also called the Socratic Method. It's total effluvia, but widely accepted as a critical thought mechanism by those without the ability to think for themselves. *Rigged games of chance and sport fall into this category. You've spoken on just that topic when discussing the "unfair" fights you audited and participated in. When the refs and promoter know who's going to win in advance (no matter what objective reffing would say) it's a contrived situation, too. I know you've been there and done that. I enjoyed the stories.

It’s too easy for anyone who’s trained even a little in a serious art to pick them apart (DUST). Most of his takedowns can be disproven within your first 2 or 3 classes under a serious coach. My favorite ones are his demos on “BJJ black belts”. I’ve asked him several times to give up the names of the schools where these actors train to no avail. Bullshido at its finest.

Kinda but he didn’t do any of the techniques how he showed them. He actually had to do the things people pointed out when he called them idiots. Like, deflect the gun, and burst at no point did he magically step to the side and hold the gun out of battery. Basically proving himself wrong. Some of his stuff can kinda work but not like his stupid tiktoks and he really is just a jerk. Yes if I stand still for him he can poke me or trip me. I think Ramsey makes a fair point pointing out flaws in Techniques it’s the only way someone improves, he isn’t telling people to be raped and murdered. Also only thing that video really proves is he is stupid enough to play with a real gun.

In the late eighties the Red Berets came to Hollywood to patrol the streets. They all wore identical uniforms and red berets and they would walk the sidewalks, usually in pairs, sometimes in threes. In my experience they were cool and were not looking for trouble and they were ready to respond to trouble. They disappeared sometime in the late nineties. Now there is a private security force occasionally walking the streets, dressed like L.A.P.D. without holsters and guns (they have nightsticks and cuffs). Most of them are overweight and a bit arrogant but if you joke with them they will usually loosen up. I felt safe with they Red Berets, no so much with Hollywood Security.
