Im just your average Nascar fan who watched the 2001 Daytona 500 from flag to flag. Steves win at Rockingham and Dales Pepsi 400 win are some of the most amazing moments in spectator sports
@@pennythedog6605 his first and only championship without Ray Evernham proving Ray wasn't the only reason that #24 team was a success. And based on Winston Cup points and everyone's finishes in the races every year.. if the points format never changed, Jeff Gordon would be tied with The King and The Intimidator as a 7x champion and Jimmie Johnson would only have 2 championships
Honestly, I hate seeing all this again....but Steve Park is the Real Deal!!! I'm glad he's doing so well! Luv to hear the stories And Amen, on that Steve Park win
Somebody new bought the track they're renovating things but all that's been announced so far is it's going to be a music venue, they already announced Carolina rebellion leaving Charlotte Speedway to go to Rockingham.
It is a crime that Rockingham was removed from the Cup schedule. Rockingham is one of the greatest tracks in the history of the sport; it always gave us exciting racing & amazing finishes. In the February '01 race that Steve won, Bobby was right on his bumper going into the final turn & Steve had to hold him off by blocking him in the high groove - it was glorious!
NASCAR was never the same after his passing. Tony Stewart tried to stand up to take his place as the driver's representative but was stood down by the Corporate suits. The suits ruined NASCAR.
When Dale passed all of NASCAR and the fans were hurting, and for Steve to go out and win Rockingham and Harvick to win @ Atlanta in the 29 for RCR it was like salve in a deep wound that helped any and all of NASCAR and the fans to heal from a tragic loss to the sport.
Yeah. Steve Park, driving for DEI, wins the first race after Dale was killed. Jeff Gordon, Dale’s biggest rival at the time, wins at Las Vegas (race #3). Kevin Harvick, Dale’s replacement at RCR, wins at Atlanta in career start #3 (in the race that Dale had won the year before). Rusty Wallace, one of Dale’s closest friends, wins at California on April 29th, Dale’s birthday - and Dale Jr. finished in the #3 position. And, of course, Dale Jr. winning at Daytona in July for career win #3 was the icing on the cake.
@@blendezfamily8727 Irony much? It was meant to happen I believe. Don't forget, Jr. Also wins the Talladega fall race (a year after Dale's last win) then come February, wins the Busch race at Daytona in the #3
Met Steve at Daytona this year. Awesome guy, we talked for a good 20 minutes! Favorite part of the whole day. :) It's unfortunate how his career was ended due to injuries.
Again I will say this.. THANK YOU SO MUCH to the both of you..Steve I am so glad your doing so much better. Dale thanks for sharing with us all.. ya'll be safe and have a good rest of your day. Thanks again
I was at Rockingham the weekend after Daytona sitting near the exit of turn 4 and I remember the stun on everyone's face seeing JR hit the wall. It was about the eeriest thing I'd ever seen in my life.
My dad was at Daytona when Sr crashed he said everybody just assumed he was gonna be alright then he seen all the medical crews then the ambulance was running slowly and that's when he knew something was very very wrong then Mike heltons announcement came he said everybody was numb leaving the track he heard soft cries whispers and he shed a little bit of a tear himself I've seen the video he got of the crash and the aftermath it's the most eerie thing I've ever seen and I wasn't even alive to be there
Steve Park was,and still is a legend of NASCAR period. Led and mentored from Dale S r.and the great Buddy Baker. What a shame that his career was cut short because he had so much potential going for his career and life.
These stories are priceless not only because they are about racing. Dale jr.'s comment about when you loose someone the world goes on. My mom passed 16 years ago at the age of 56. I remember standing at the grave side with my hand on her casket and seeing cars going down the road next to the cemetery. I remember wondering how outside of the cemetery the world just kept going with my mom gone. WOW That has not crossed my mind in years.
Injuries was why he walked away... And DEI folding didn't help... And if he would have had better equipment with RCR, he could have won a title or 2... Many different factors there
I remember this win like it was yesterday. We were mourning as if we had lost a member of our family. Our broken hearts had just a bit of healing that day!
All of these video of Junior interviewing everyone about his dad passing.....as I'm crying man tears. Junior stays solid. I can't explain how much love and respect I have you ya Jr.
I became a Steve Park fan watching him race (Featherlite) tour mods at Thompson Speedway (CT), then was fortunate enough to get to meet and talk with him in Loudon, NH his second year in Winston Cup. One hell of a driver, and a really nice guy. I'm happy to see him looking well, but really missed seeing him drive after the injury. Just happy that you're healthy, Steve.
Park winning that race was one of the greatest moments for a earnhardt fan. I didn’t even wanna turn on the race but I did. Then harvick winning in Atlanta the following week . Throw in the Pepsi 400 at Daytona that year. If it had not played out the way it did I don’t think I would of continued to watch nascar without the black 3 out there
I remember that race and it brought a happy tear when Park won. I was so bummed out for Jr, crashing on the first couple laps. I knew what he was sitting in that car thinking about at that time. We all cried when Dale died, but the 2001 year that Steve and Mikey and Dale Jr. won, it helped a lot. It was the start of healing for the fans. Do it for Dale!
Can you get Johnny Benson on your show? What I love the most is the true racers who have won at so many levels then come to cup and end up working soooooo hard for the one or two wins. As a race fan that is all I care about. Is the driver who digs and digs for the one victory. Johnny was the one who did that. Not only one of the greatest wins in all time but the WHITE 10 car year.
WOW I JUST Remember that moment when the TV announcer came back on after the accident happened and said " He's Gone ~ Dale Sr has passed away." I just sat down on the floor and cried - I couldn't believe it had happened ~ disbelief - and then All I could think about was Dale Jr and how sad I was for Him ~ the TV briefly showed Jr afterwards and His face was flush and full of sadness I couldn't help but cry right along with Him & Everyone else too - Terrible Tragedy 😢 Thank You to Steve Park, Kevin Harvick and most of ALL Thank You Dale Jr for the 2nd of those #3 Healing Moments ~ God Bless 🙏 You and Your Family Always🙏 Michael C.
Steve Park may never make the NASCAR Hall of Fame. However, he's a Hall of Fame human being. Had that accident not happened at Darlington we'd be sitting here much longer listening to stories of Steve's wins during his career... I have absolutely ZERO doubts of that.
Grew up around short tracks, drove some on dirt then life came calling. Sr passed on my 25th birthday. Worst day ever until my dad's passing, but on that day in Feb '01 I turned the TV off right after the race finished and for some reason, somehow, I knew what happened. Helton's presser wasn't a surprise to me, to this day I can't understand why. I just knew it. Was a Sr fan all the way back to the Wrangler days when I was a kid. Michael's win that day obviously was overshadowed, Steve's win at the Rock and then Jr's win in July got me back into racing the next year. That whole year helped me to understand life's too short and enjoy life. Former car owner now but still a sponsor. Love the sport. 15 years ago I thought the good Ole days was the 80's and 90's, but these guys here in this vid, they're tough, paved the way to today. Early 2000's DEI success was the real good Ole days.
I was 13 in 2001 and a fan of Dale since 92 at 3 years old. Myself and my family cried our eyes out when Dale passed. Still to this day his death just seems so unreal. Such a great man to all that he came in contact with. Would do anything for anyone. Dale Earnhardt is a true American Icon. Just an all around good person. Did so much for so many. In my honest opinion DALE EARNHARDT is NASCAR!
Hate what happened with DEI. I’m glad Jr is doing well and made his own path. We all miss Earnhardt tremendously. This podcast has allowed his fans to see behind the curtain and we absolutely love it & thank you for it.
I was 10 years old when i saw the 2001 daytona 500 we were all pulling for mikey man and it was like a flash you hear "big trouble the 3 car into the wall" it seemed like a normal crash at first but i could tell by the way Darrell said "i just hope Dale's ok" that gave me a bad feeling
i was home that day too, and am a Mikey fan. that accident did him in emotionally, and felt so sorry for Kenny. I can not imagine what he saw and how it effected him. he will not talk about it to this day
As a Driver, Team Owner and Announcer, Walturp could tell by the actions Schrader, the Track crew and 1st Responders that it was bad. Probably had a Scanner going to. I knew it was bad when they weren't showing Dale or his car. Usually they show the after crash , driver getting out of the car. Once Schrader started waving frantically, they never showed another shot. Then the Ambulance going off track at a slow speed convinced me. I had tickets to the Rock the next weekend.
I'm from Dublin IRELAND and I never got to see DALE sr race. I became a fan of NASCAR when Juan Pablo Montoya went there from F1 and fell in love Wit NASCAR. I wish it was still on TV over here because I miss it and only get to see little bits day's after the race is over on RU-vid and I know who has won
Steve is such a great guy. I’ve got numerous pictures with him through the years. He is such a nice, humble and personable guy, which is what made me a fan. My brother worked in the sport for many years. I love watching these interviews because they bring back many memories.
I’ve always wondered how good Jr really could have been with Sr. around. Do you all think it would have been different for him? Not to take anything from Jr. He had a great career.
I absolutely think that Junior would have won at least a championship and a LOT more races. I’d be willing to say junior would have 50 career wins if Sr never dies. Michael Waltrip also would have possibly even had a championship. DEI would have been a powerhouse team like Hendrick.
There's always a what if. And with steve if not for Darlington park could have been a contender for a cup title. Mid 2000 into 2001 he was finally coming into a rhythm of consistency
Jr. ..... You still got it man .... But please. ..... Don't feed your itch .... I don't mean to ... I don't mean to tell you how to live ... I just feel similar inside ... If you want to ... I get it man ... But you IMHO are where you should be. .... ... Focus on those lost tracks and Forza tunes .... You know?
Park the Shark! 🤘🏻 I use to call him that because of the paint scheme his car had in 1999 at Miami.... I think it was Miami anyway, he was my favorite driver. I use to play Nascar Racing Season 2003 and would run all his paint schemes. My favorite was the reverse paint scheme his car had... that was pretty badass. Miss those days.... Fun stuff!
I remember the Rockingham race well. The #3 vortex hats all the drivers were wearing, Jr.'s freaky crash and Park bringing home a win. What an emotional day.
The way everything happened was so for the lack of a better word....strange. You had Dale die on the last lap of the last turn at Daytona of all places then Park winning the very next race on lessons he learned from Dale then the JR winning the very next time at Daytona. I'm sure Dale would've loved to live longer and see his grand kids and everything but on the other hand he died doing what he loved and I'm sure it was a quick feel nothing type of death. Its almost like the whole thing was scripted. Life is a crazy ride. All you can do sometimes is strap in and enjoy.
He didn’t. Teresa fired him because apparently 2 life-threatening accidents on the track can’t excuse poor Motorsport results. That same week, RCR fired Jeff Green because he wasn’t getting along with the rest of the racing team. With both Park and Green being free agents, DEI hired Jeff to drive the No. 1 while Richard gave Steve the opportunity to drive the No. 30.
I loved Atlanta with Harvick because he was handpicked by Dale Sr. But I love at the end of this video where Jr says, "that's right man" in agreement with Park. I always liked Park and wished he'd never been hurt.
After meeting Steve and Kevin at the preview that year then just a couple of weeks later Dale was gone. Some reason when Steve was interviewing I got to stand there and talk with Kevin and had a moment together then Steve came back to the table and the 3 of us laughed and talked for a few. Little did we know what was about to happen. I'll admit I cried when Dale passed. Then the next week Steve wins Rockingham and that moment we talked all came rushing back at me and I bawled for seemed for an hour. I'm teary eyed as I write this. And then when Kevin won it all came back again. A special time for me thanks to Steve, Kevin and NASCAR for making it happen.
Man I loved watching Steve race. It made it even better that dad's name is Steve Parks. It was hilarious watching them meet each other back in the day at Watkins Glen.
I know you’ve had your differences with Kevin the past few years however, I really think he would be a great guest for 2021. I’m sure a lot went along with him being thrown in the 29 car under those circumstances, and coming out and winning in his third race. I would kill to hear you guys talk about all of that. Kevin Harvick: Replacing a legend. Sounds like a good podcast title!
I remember Steve living around here in Ellington CT, racing at Stafford Speedway and area tracks. Watching him race was a real treat. He could win in anything he drove, he was that good. I also remember his repair business as he would come buy and borrow the use of our tire machine. Great memories. Does anyone know if that’s Andy Johnson next to him in the last victory lane photo?
Was at that Race. Camping for the weekend. When Jr. Wrecked , the Crowd did a collectively held our breath. So many changes, not for the good of Nascar came after that.
Still taught me how to do Rockingham is the funniest part he taught everybody how to drive Rockingham he taught Kyle Larson how to drive the way he does
No I have to say rest in peace to Steve Park because I love that man. And to Dale Earnhardt as well and Neil Bonnett, Davey Allison I don't want to do this anymore I'm glad we have a lot safer race cars
I feel in love with Stock cars in a farm house at 6 yrs or so late at night watching Wide World of Sports. This is a great memory ride. Thank you Dale.
That was very sad day for everybody when we lost dale sr I was so happy when Steve won the next race then Jr wins at Daytona really wish dale sr was still living but when he passed he was doing was happy from those interviews through that weekend and seeing his team that he owned runing 1 and 2
I was there that day, and I remember Steve and Junior getting together that was the crash. Junior has a lot of class not to mention it. Steve, I'm guessing only mentioned the over running of the corner story, to let it be know that is what happened.
I got in to nascar in 08 and a fan from England nascar was not shown on British television unless you had sky or satellite or cable so i didn't get to see your dad race but wat i have seen on RU-vid and DVDs man wat a driver and a person.
