JR had terminal Cancer and rather than have his family watch him waste away, he had his bodyguard shoot him and frame Cliff for the crime. It was his final “F You “ to Cliff Barnes.

Before good old JR Ewing died he made sure that his bodyguard shot him as John Ross Ewing III was talking to his dad overheard the bulletes coming from the gone that shot JR Ewing and JR decided to frame Cliff Barnes once and for all from the grave. JR told Bobby that this was going to be his “masterpiece” and it was! He even left explicit instructions on what all to do to make this happen and frame Cliff. It worked to perfection! It took 50+ years, but JR finally won the Ewing/Barnes feud!

JR dying from terminal cancer, framed Cliff for his murder. Having watched the original series, I don't think that the characters Bobby and Sue Ellen would have gone along with that frame-up. The whole story line was very poor imo.
