No way could a Jock Ewing ever have a wife other than Ellie. He’s intimidating and powerful. JR scares a whole state with one phone call...doesn’t even try to talk back to Jock. Bobby stands up to Jock, but even he knows when to quit. Ellie isn’t afraid of him, and a man like that HAS to have a woman like that, or their egos will run rampant

That's what made him such a memorable character. Also if Dallas had one thing in common with UK Soaps is that there's always a Scene with Liquor. Either at Home, or the Neighborhood Pub whether it's on Eastenders, Coronation Street or Emmerdale. I call this The "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof Salute". Remember when Big Momma said to Maggie "When A Marriage Is On The Rocks, The Rocks Are There Right There!" Miss Ellie bought it into this Scene and as you know she Played Maggie on Broadway in one of the earlier productions back in the day.
@Ma007rk
@Ma007rk 5 лет назад
When Larry Hagman played the lovable, bumbling, fumbling Major Nelson on "I dream of Jeannie" people didn't watch the show because of him, they watched it for Barbara Eden. (In my opinion) her and Donna Douglas (Ellie May Clampett) were 2 of the most beautiful women in the world. Having said that when Larry Hagman became JR Ewing his popularity with the females literally went through the ROOF. I heard a female make the comment that the reason he was so popular among the women was because even though he was a PRICK, and ruthless he was very powerful. Women are attracted to that kind of personality, not so much the placid, easygoing types. They love the POWER, and the materialism. That is why so many are willing to put up with the Machiavellian personality traits, and the cheating, and knowing that they have their eye's on other females.

Jock knew how wicked JR was but Miss Ellie was the only one who called him on it. In The Old School Books after JR Bankrupted their Associates, Bobby told him how much trouble he was in and JR said "I don't need you to protect me Bobby" but Jock had a premonition that something bad was going to happen and he got shot.

Missy Ellie is a prime example of a parent judging her son for being exactly the type of person his father and she raised him to be someone without morals who doesn’t feel guilt.
@chandlerwhite8302
@chandlerwhite8302 Год назад
Listen to the scene carefully. She let JR go to be raised solely by Jock, and he turned JR into a ruthless robber baron with no soul. That’s why he is an even more ruthless version of Jock. The opposite was true of Gary. Jock had almost nothing to do with his upbringing, and he turned out to be weaker than dishwater because of it. Bobby had attention from both, so he turned out to be a balanced person who can reign in JR. That’s the underlying theme of the entire show while Jock is alive.

Also what the Family didn't realize is that for her Alcohol is a "Coping" mechanism. She was such a fragile woman that JR made her think that everything that was wrong in her life was "Her" fault. No matter how horrible he was to her, she always stayed because she felt without him, she was nothing. Remember in Winds Of Vengeance after the Cowboys left, JR looked at Sue Ellen who shot him daggers of anger. In that scene you saw how narcisstic he was.

One of my favorite episodes, the birth of John Ross. Sue Ellen drank because of JR's philandering and his callowness. Loved when Miss Ellie read the riot act on JR for his wicked ways, and not being there for Sue Ellen during their marriage, but at the same time regretting that she didn't intervene when JR was growing up, that was why she had a say in raising Gary and Bobby. It's understandable why John Ross became the way he was in the reboot, seeing his parents fighting and using him as a pawn over the years, not seeing how it affected him and his decision to revive Ewing Oil (Energies).

God Miss Ellie really realizes now that "giving JR To Jock" as a littl eboy was a very bad thing. As for his love for his Sons, he loved them all but never equally. Bobby was the apple of his eye, Gary reminded him too much of Garrison and Aaron Southworth, who ran or died and JR was the "Heir Apparent" to the Ewing Throne and as the "Eldest" he was supposed to be a proper example to his Brothers. Jock taught to win at all costs and when he did do "things" Jock would get upset because it was wrong, but it was a bundle of contradictions. The Ewings talked but never effectively communicated.

what kind of mother lets go of her child at 5 yr old....for whatever reasons...that is just ridiculous....not guiding him or reprimanding him when he acts up...what did she expect...now its a bit too late woman..he is a grown man.

They were a fun, cool family. They had a lot of love for each other and passion. Even if they weren’t oil tycoons they would still be kind of interesting.

Near the end of the conversation, J.R. seemed a little scared of facing the worst.

John Ross is JR from Tip to Tail. Miss Ellie would not be happy with whats going on in the new series..

I like the scene where Sue Ellen life is in a crisis, esp. her's & JR's only son, John Ross, who's in jeopardy!

“I don’t think you have any redeeming qualities.” Not exactly the words you want to hear from your mom.

Only Miss Ellie kept JR in line.

By saying he has no redeeming qualities? Crappy mother.

Ares99999 You could tell in his face it hurt more than he would let on. Despite all the dirty deeds he just wanted to make his parents proud of him and nothing he did could do that. He was a pretty despicable human being, but to say he has no redeeming qualities was cruel and wrong.

crassyfrake The problem I had with that is that some of the other characters weren't much better than JR, only they were less overt about it. Bobby, honestly, often let his fists do the talking a bit too easily. Jock was often an ass, Pam could be one hell of a bitch when she wanted to. Even Ellie, like in this scene, could be really cruel. But while JR gets called out on every single thing he did - and some he didn't - the other members of the family are rarely called out for their own behaviour. In a sense, its very unfair treatment. And honestly, JR worshipped his parents. If he turned out that way, its because Jock and Ellie let him turn out that way.

Ares99999 " Your father has redeeming qualities." Umm ... not really. The apple doesn't fall too far from the tree. Yes JR is pure evil. So was Jock. Miss Ellie has her evil moments.

srb9 I completely disagree that JR is 'Pure Evil'.

It would be cool if Patrick Duffy played Jock if they ever made a Dallas movie. I have no idea who would play miss ellie.
