This scene is a reminder how deep J.R. and Valene's relationship went. Considering Lucy's age, I would say they met around 1962 or 1963 when Gary married her and brought her to Southfork. His henchmen snatched Lucy when Lucy was baby in the 60's So she had plenty of years and reasons to hate J.R.. I'll bet that first book she wrote - "Capricorn Crude" - pull ALL of that mess on Front Street.
JR also knew that the more things changed the more they stayed the same. Gary still cracked under pressure, he couldn't handle being a family man and he still was scared to death of JR. As for Valene, despite everything she was stronger that she didn't depend on the Ewing Name or Money to get by.
Because she was a simple hash-slinger at the diner; Gary was a weak, drunk gambler (who was driven out of Jock's will), but JR figured Valene would make it all work out, and they'd both get 1/3 of Southfork & Ewing Oil! She HAD to go - period!
+LIONSMANIAC JR resented Gary because he was his mother's blue eyed boy, and Bobby was Jocks favourite. JR was out on his own. He was the one Jock was harshest on. It's true that JR disliked Valene because she was a simple illiterate weakling when her and Gary first met. However he did have time for Gary's 2nd wife Abby Fairgate, he bedded her twice as she despised Valene and was a female version of himself.
Never ever watched KNOTS LANDING. I always intended to, but just saw one episode briefly, when Kristin Shepard was on. I think that Jock was hard on Gary. You heard Jock say "It broke my heart when I found out he (Gary) didn't have any guts". Ouch.
@@LIONSMANIAC There were a lot of contradictions in Dallas surrounding JR. JR disliked Valenr because he considered her a 'hayseed' and not good enough for Gary. He ended up marrying a hayseed himself (Cally). He disliked Ray because Ray was according to JR an illegitimate half-breed. Well he had one of his own called James. As Cliff put it how many more bastards are going to come out of the woodwork. JR had the biggest stable in Texas. If it was female, he bedded it. Including Gary's 3rd wife Abby. 3rd wife because he was married to Valene twice. Gary was married 4 times but to Valene 3 times. Valene was married 5 times. Gary x 3 and Ben and Danny.
I was reading some of the comments, one said that Gary was driven out of jock’s will, that’s not so Jock left J.R. Bobby, Ray , Gary 10 million dollars each.
jOCK'S ORIGINAL will left Gary virtually nothing. Jock was pissed at him because of his drinking and behavior. the original will would have been reinstated had ME won her court case, and she would have sold the company.
This was a great scene. It was notable because after the first season, no scenes were ever filmed at or by the outside of the front door of South Fork. So in that sense, this scene stands out. I could cherry-pick the handful of scenes filmed outside the front door of the real South Fork ranch house.
Then this scene was filmed at the wrong time of the day because the house faces west and the sun is in the western sky, meaning that filming took place in the afternoon. But JR says to Val "you'll catch your death on a morning like this." The whole scene would've been filmed in the shadow of the house if it were actually morning at the time of the shoot.
JR's hatred and snobbery towards Val simply because she was a working class southern belle who waited on tables ... and then he went and married Cally. I really wish she and Val had met - what a story that'd have been!
@TheloniousJackson In my original comment, I suggested a storyline where Val and Cally met, to which you replied 'ridiculous storyline', leading me to presume you were talking about my suggested idea. If so, yes, that is rude. And dismissive. You don't have to agree but at least have the courtesy to explain why.
JR believed that women like Valene and Cally were good to sleep with but not marry. JR married Cally at her family farm in what was literally a shotgun wedding. He married her again at Southfork because he made him think she was pregnant. Then again, Sue Ellen was also working class. Her mother said that money was tight after her father died. Maybe JR felt that Sue Ellen being a beauty queen made her “honorary aristocracy.”
@@tommyparkerparker Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of hers all the way, but nonetheless she really was too thin in these episodes. At this time she was a character actress very much in demand appearing in numerous TV shows at a time, perhaps the stress from that accelerated her metabolism as it does to certain people.
