Where are you in Dallas? How is the law enforcement? What area do mostly black people live? I'm not a racist or anything just a lil more comfortable around people like me.
@bigjimfanning
@bigjimfanning 6 лет назад
K Beckom I live in North Dallas. The law enforcement is Ok if you are in the Dallas city limits. They typically don’t mess with you if your not committing serious offenses but the suburbs are a different story. The worst places for policing are - - Highland Park (Do not drive through here in an old vehicle because they will stop you. This is the Bubble and only super wealthy live here) - Garland (These cops are total dicks. They are what you would think of as storm troopers) - Farmers Branch (Don’t speed because they will get you every time. They are mostly concerned with writing tickets and tracking down illegals) As far as where most blacks live its really a mix. The area that people associate with the African American side of town would be south of downtown (South Dallas, Oak Cliff, Cedar Hill, Duncanville) however, Dallas has a lot of pockets. The more affluent blacks live in North Dallas near Addison. There is Skillman Audelia which is high crime and drug infested. Pleasant Grove which is crime infested. Its best to stay in the North but if you do live south, there are really nice parts of Oak Cliff. South Dallas is pretty much where the poorest of the poor live, as well as Pleasant Grove. I would say almost any place in Dallas you will find African Americans except Highland Park, University Park which is mostly rich white people.

I grew up in Dallas and it's hot in the summer, the traffic sucks, and there is no public transportation compared to NYC. WE HAVE A SAYING....If you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes. There are great restaurants, nightclubs, and many things to do. If you don't drive or want to drive, it's virtually impossible to get around. Best advice to you is smile anywhere in the world you are. Texans, in general, are friendly and welcoming. I moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina with a population of 14 million and we have the best public transportation in South America.

As an Argentinian born and raised I can safely say that our public transport network is really far reaching but it’s really badly organized, there are strikes often and you have to at least know two or three different routes in case one of the buses/trains/metro lines you take goes down.

I'm a Dallas native. Been here forever and the cost of living is rising due to all of you coming to Dallas. Those of us who are from here are seeing the impact In terms of pricing changes. But I still think it's cool to have Chicagoans/New Yorkers/Californians here in my city. Just has its cons having y'all move over here lol

Yah... Everything you mention, is what I am going through. I haven't find no caribbean market or restaurant as yet. (If you find one let me know). The cost of living is great compare to the Bronx. Make sure you get a good health insurance plan (It can be costly). Cedar Hill is the one area where I saw the most black people. I miss the mountain and trail we had in NYC. Dallas trails are a joke. P.S check out Cedar Ridge preserve.... You will fall in love.

Definitely right about Cedar Hill! Its a great area to buy a house btw, and there are more black owned businesses near Cedar Hill, Desoto, and Duncanville than places in north Dallas. Good Caribbean food is definitely hard to come by though. There's Heroes Lounge in Dallas... the vibe is good but the food is just ok.

Great video. Just a caveat: do NOT move to Texas unless you first check it out in the summertime. The place is WICKED HOT. A typical summer day is 102-104 (air temperature, not the heat index, it's even higher with the heat index). Some years you have more than 60 days of 100 + degree temperatures. Summer there lasts from early May to October and it's not unheard of to have 90 + degree days in March and April. And in case you were hoping, it's not a dry heat, except in the far western portion of the state. Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and Houston are NOT dry. Houston is a sauna, much like New Orleans.

Dallas is 27% white and 23% black. I dont know where you got predominantly Caucasian from? From the looks of your apartment you live in uptown or somewhere close, maybe thats why. But go south of i30(which if half of Dallas) and theres not a single predominantly white neighborhood or suburb.

Welcome to Dallas sir! Im seeing more and more NY and NJ license plates in Dallas..not to mention Cali and everyone else's. Its also a second home for Chicagoans. Remember the more people we get here the better and more diverse the culture and scene will become. I was born here and have seen it change. Some people have scattered to the north suburbs. I say screw that! I love staying in Dallas proper and own my condo here. Its becoming more dense and urban and the cranes are sprouting highrises which I love. Don't forget to try out the DART rail system. Its expanding and hopefully will be on par with Chi/NY/LA someday. There are also rumors of a subway coming. Whoo! Our summers since the horrible 2011 have actually been kind of mild. Hopefully wont be too bad this year but remember it doesnt last forever. Glad you are here. You seem like good people!

smi Lee 2011 had 65 consecutive days over 100 degrees. It was horrible. I almost wanted to move and I'm a native. Since then the summers haven't been bad at all. Actually mild. What's odd is that 2011 was the same year we hosted the SBowl and had our "blizzard"..Bi polar weather haha.
@JasnoGT
@JasnoGT 6 лет назад
smi Lee Dallas doesn't flood like Houston. Houston's buffalo bayou is not draining out the excess water correctly because there is too much concrete everywhere. Dallas is more hilly and not completely flat (though people say we are..we actually have a mini hill country on the SW side.) so if it floods it just pools in certain areas.

I have lived in Dallas forever-the past 40 years. Dallas basically is losing it's individual character. It's not the Dallas I remember growing up in. When I walk around just listening to people talk I hear less and less of the Texas accent I use to hear all the time growing up in the 80's. Look I get it. People want to move to where the economy is hottest. With that you have all the cookie cutter American landscaping-the Starbucks on every corner, the chain restaurants and clone shopping centers. Dallas is sadly becoming a cookie cutter American city with no original charm of it's own. In my view Dallas is no longer part of Texas.

I'm so glad I came across this video. Very helpful! My husband is currently applying and interviewing for jobs in the Dallas area. We're both 100% done with NYC (Bronx) and ready to go. My dad lives in San Antonio. I've been searching every city near Dallas. I'm glad you mentioned about schools as we have 2 girls (so now I can check some of the cities you mentioned). One question, how was apartment searching? I found 2 beautiful communities in Irving & Arlington and decided to Google them. The reviews are so poor. Then I checked reviews for like 20 random places (expensive and cheap) and the reviews are like 3 stars and below. Its rare to find a 4 star. Again thanks! I'm looking to get back into RU-vid full time when I get over there.
@monicamorgendorffer1738

Apartment searching can be a huge pain here. I ran across the same issues while I was looking so I'd love to try and help! I would suggest researching better neighborhoods (good schools, low crime, whatever your family needs) and finding the ones that interest you then looking for apartment communities in those areas. There are SO MANY communities stuffed into small areas so if you don't have a set area in mind it could be overwhelming. My next tip would be to look at the area around the apartment communities using google street view maps, they can be very telling. Also take some consideration to activities your family likes or stores that you are fond of. Those can also help you pick an area to live in. I would highly suggest considering your commute. It's not a lie when they say traffic is really bad here. I live in North Dallas and I love the area. I'm very close (within 5-10 minutes) to 3 large malls, tons of strip malls with MORE shops, restaurants, so many grocery stores (seriously, even multiples), multiple libraries, people parks, dog parks, basically anything you want or need. Plus I'm only a 20 minutes from downtown (if the traffic is good). On a side note, Arlington is also really well priced and I have friends that love it there. Plus you're sososos close to six flags :D

Ive lived in dallas for 18 years and now I've been in Houston for 10 years. The public transportation is dallas is far superior to houston. Cheaper. Easier to navigate and will get u farther into suburbs if need be. The people in Houston are more interesting. Dallas people act like people from small towns, they are into 1 thing, that's it. They never venture away from the same few places they go.. Dallas has a cooler more distinguishable skyline. Jobs in both cities are easy to find. In my opinion, finding affordable apartments was easier in dallas. And in dallas u don't have to live a shit hole area to find a $400 apartment (tollway and Frankford area, Frankford and marsh etc). Dallas has a more obvious drug problem (cheese heroin is a real issue all over dallas area). Houston seems to easier to travel around without ending up in dangerous places. The traffic is Houston is for the most part worse than Dallas. Although I35 and 635in North dallas are always horrible. The highway systems are very similar in both cities. Big loops (635 and LBJ in dallas and 610 and beltway 8 in Houston) with intersecting highways running north and south (D=35,75,45 H=59,45,249,288) east and west (D=20,30 H= 10) Dallas feels like a city mostly interested looking important and fancy or successful and Houston is more laid back with more country Texan vibe. Also Houston has a big problem with smash and grab atm robberies and "juggin"

good insight. although Dallas is not as affordable as it once was. when I married the second time, we bought a house and our payment for a 3 bedroom was $550 a month(granted, this was off overton road and Lancaster by the VA hospital.) and to your comment about the people, it seems that you have a lot of people from small Oklahoma, east Texas and west Texas towns, to whom Dallas is just like NYC or LA, and people from NYC and LA who view Dallas as a small Texas town. Another thing about Dallas is you cant always tell if you are in a dangerous area by the looks of it. For example the redbird area in west oak cliff is all nice brick homes, but a lot happens out there

I'm Texas born and raised and have been around the world. Yes, the Lone Star State can absolutely invest in light rail and, I daresay, subways of some kind or another. What Texas Central is doing is absolutely on the right track and there should be more high speed rail and light rail in the cities and subways. It will only make it a better place to live.

Born and raised in Dallas. Lived in Plano and Richardson for years as well. Now in Upstate NY. From the weather to the people to the insane taxes NY is like living in Hell compared to Dallas area. Only reason I found this video is because I want to move back to Dallas. Lived in a ton of places after I left Dallas 20 years ago from Philly, Chicago, and Tampa Bay. Nothing even comes close to Dallas but I will say I have not been shot at since I left Dallas either. Very trigger happy people and gang infested in Dallas so don't be fooled.

I'm looking to relocate to Dallas. I am sick to death of the north, the high costs, rude people. I experienced Boston area, Portland OR being the worst of anywhere I ever been and I have no fkn idea why many black ppl want to make Portland home to them but I been seeing it a lot lately. My white privilege card if I ever had one does not work in Portland. I can check caucasian all day on forms, I don't get noticed as one. Me being a true other, I can see myself fitting in better down south. Even if people do not voice their prejudices in the north, they got them. And the more silent they are and the more polite people are but without the true hospitality, the worse typically. Pick the most genetic white areas in the north with no real good food, they're typically horrible places to be in my experience. I speak this from a true Italian American perpective. New England beats Oregon, but NE still has a lot of cost of living ills and social ills too, the NW is just worse. I am going only to a southern state when I move again, hopefully Dallas or maybe somewhere in Alabama.

Most people live in the suburbs and drive to their jobs in Dallas. Hence the traffic. But the state is building highways damn fast for that issue. As they expect to grow by 1M more in the next 5 years. North of Dallas is growing. All the high tech jobs are out their. One reason it's growing so fast. As it used to be farm land 20 years ago. And you are right. It's a big sports town. As I worked on the Cowboy stadium when it was being built. We had shit loads of Yankees from New York to pick on... :)

I got pulled over in Oak Cliff in the 90s for being white. The cop escorted me back to the highway. I have family from the area and whites get pulled out of the car and shot in that area along with South and West Dallas. Don't forget Hamilton Park either. I always stayed armed in that area. Look at a crime report and see for yourself, Dallas crime is more than double NY. St Pete Fl is triple. Lived there 12 years after Dallas. Just be smart, armed and ready and you will be fine.

@user-vc6kr1jh2s
@user-vc6kr1jh2s 6 лет назад
I grew up here in Dallas and I agree with Built4anything. Even though we are a "big" city, we are not really diverse. We have 3 main races, Mexican, Black, and White if you go out to Richardson, there is a big Arab community, and if you go out to Carrollton you will find Korean community. We do not really have an effective public transportation. Our streets are not really in a "grid" form like straight up and down, they kind of spiral in and out and then all of a sudden you're on another street so it's kind of hard to get around without a gps, unless you grew up here and know the city.
