Dallas Stars vs VGK Game 2 Reactions: Stars play well but lack execution, Vegas take 2-0 Series lead

The Dallas Stars lose game two by a final score of 3-1 and the Vegas Golden Knights take a commanding 2-0 series lead back to Vegas for game three. Jason Robertson scored his 2nd goal of the series to give Dallas a 1-0 lead, but it was answered by Jonathan Marchessault a few minutes later. Vegas picked up a late period goal from Noah Hanifin in the 2nd and shut down the Stars the rest of the way. Joey gives his initial thoughts and feeling right after game two and tries to explain what has gone wrong in the first two games of the series. One of those issues has been the play of Joe Pavelski, Roope Hintz, Matt Duchene and Tyler Seguin, they have done a lot of things right in the first two games, but it has not amounted to much. Vegas deserves credit for being a great defensive team, but the Stars are not seeing the depth scoring they got throughout the regular season. Someone has to step in order for them to get back in the series. The Stars must win game three on Saturday if they want a chance to come back and win the series. Joey wants to believe they can do it, but it will be an uphill climb against a Vegas team that has looked really solid in the first two games.

Vegas fan here, believe me when I say I was worried when Stars scored, even after we tied it up, because Vegas had a terrible record when they give up the first goal. Stomach was twisted inside out until the empty net. Also, Otter is such a tough goalie, that triple save was amazing. He played well.

As a vgk fan, I couldn’t agree more. I was really nervous going into this series especially with Dallas being #1 seed having one of their best seasons ever. I honestly think this series could go either way, but DEBOER has been out coached . He just can never get it done in the playoffs. I’m so proud of the way VgK has played and tbh, they haven’t even Played their best hockey yet.

Well guys your team is so damn good. I was so excited for my stars post season but this vegas team is unreal defensively. I'm sad such a great teams going to just get washed out so quickly but I don't know who the heck is gunna be able to beat Vegas. Their massive, opportunistic and just know how to win. Goodluck the rest of the way. That was a masterclass on how to win a road playoff game.

I think a lot of people have gotten lost in the “LTIR” storyline. In reality, Vegas had A TON of serious injuries this year. They had multiple players that missed 20, 30, 40 games. So it wasn’t a matter of needing to “flip a switch” they simply needed NHL players on their roster. They had a long stretch where 1/3 of the roster weren’t even NHL players. That’s why they are an 8 seed that barely made the playoffs.

Honestly man you’ve managed to put my thoughts into words, and I won’t hate on you at all for giving the VGK their due, it’s true this is what a Stanley Cup Champion looks like; the VGK can come out and play a literally perfect game, and the Stars unfortunately can’t, a great game maybe but not perfect. I don’t like having a loser mentality about this so I don’t believe the series is over, but this team needs to show that they have what it takes Saturday night in Vegas or they might as well pack it up.

Vgk's top defenseman are pietrangelo, hanafin, theodore. They probably have the deepest dcore, one of the best center depth. When healthy, they're easily the top 3 team in the league. Dallas just got unlucky this year.

Vegas looks monstrous when healthy. Game 1 I thought to myself "uh oh, they look exactly the same vs us as the WCF last year and we are probably twice as good." If VGK sweeps us they win the cup again, barring a freak accident.

It is going to be a brutal quick exit for the Stars. I wish it is done in 4 to make it clear serious changes are needed for next year. They were not able to match either Vegas or Colorado this year. I do not see who will be able to beat Vegas this year again.

Vegas tortured the sharks for almost 3 years until they got rid of deboer. Deboer's only stanley cup is beating vegas in 2019 because of atrocious blown call. Its funny how karma works. Deboer will most likely lose his job again, and pavelski will retire with zero cup.

We gotta get more shots on goal. The entire game we could only manage 21 shots. That’s unacceptable. Robo scored so that’s great we expect him to as he usually manages to. But Benn, Seguin, and Johnson, Pavelsky, Duchene we gotta bury those opportunities and we have to produce. We started this series with home advantage and we pissed it away. If we can’t step it up in Vegas we are going to get swept and look like one of those teams that’s stellar all of regular season and then just chokes in the playoffs.

This series is over. Unfortunately another wasted season for Dallas. VGK knows the stars systems and are often one step ahead. Dallas does not match up well against them. Good luck Vegas in the rest of the postseason. They out managed and out coached the stars one again.

Vegas is just better than Dallas overall, they are deeper, better on defense and they play at a higher level come playoffs, plus they are familiar with the stars coach/coaching. Many of the players are carried over from last season too.

As a VGK fan I can honestly say you are selling your team way to short here. It's 100% on Deboar he just isn't that guy in terms of coaching capable of winning a cup. It's tough because he is a nice guy outside of that aspect hopefully your ownership group will move on from him.

The Vegas Golden Knights have a very good defense, gotta find a way to get through it. What the Dallas Stars are doing in the first two games isn’t working when it comes to winning games in the post season. At this point it’s turning out to be similar to last year. They played a good game, good isn’t good enough to win in the post season. VGK might just be a better team than the Stars 🌟.

Unfortunately Dallas fans it's Pete DeBoer. Devils and Sharks fans warned us when he was Vegas's coach. Nice guy, great regular season coach, but he does not adjust. We saw it first hand during the playoff runs against the Stars and Montreal in the bubble playoffs. Way too much talent on this Dallas squad.

To me, the fact that he perpetually keeps Steve Spot is all you need to know about DeBoer. I believe it was Spot´s poor management of the Vegas power play that got DeBoer out of Vegas...and yet, there he is! Right next to Pete on the bench. Sometimes you´ve gotta make a tough decision and Pete isn´t willing to do it.

"Stars made some adjustments (after Game 2) that I don't think we adjusted to well enough right away, but that's on us as players to find a way up 2-0 to get the job done". As a Stars fan, I'm very disappointed. I don't like being down 2-0, and I have a strong fear that the season is over -- we will be the top seed falling to the last seed of SCP 2024. And I know it happens a lot in hockey, ie. Boston of last year, Tampa Bay 2-3 years ago. It's crazy! As much I want to be faithful and confident, and also being a Cowboys fan -- the consistency of poor execution resulting in a loss is hard to breathe and believe. There's a chance sure but, man, I hate being down 2 games, hehe. I feel like Otter could be facing burnout, he's played in 14 in the last 17 games (including playoffs). I think Otter has a tendency of playing, or risking by going too far out of the net - seems like he's done that a few times this year and it's costed goals. I notice Logan T seems to play more tight. IDK - Dallas needs to get out of the quicksand, wake up and get some pucks in the net. Don't shoot sloppy low-percentage shots, crash the net - execute!!!!! Get some speed, stop slipping on the ice, work together and tell the coach to STOP rotating the goshdang lineups! Come on man!!!! I think Vegas is playing on point, Dallas looks...disheveled so far, we need poise and we need want. Let's go!

I’m a Vegas fan, so when I say I was worried about Deboer going to Dallas I really mean it. I thought Deboers o-zone system catered particularly to Dallas. Low to high and lots of deflections in front. The problem for Dallas the last two games has been that they literally can’t set up the O-zone and no one is going to the front of the net for deflections. Deboer sounded completely defeated in his post game.

All season long the Stars have been a team that doesn't dish out big hits. Now, in these first two games they switch to dishing out big hits. My point is that when time is taken to do a hit that same time is time taken away from keeping sticks on the puck which causes the KAOS needed to score. The big hit game is too big of a change to suddenly start in the post season. And now we have two injuries to prove it.

Great episode, Joey. You're not dooming at all, but I share your exact sentiment. I feel Otter played a game that is more than good enough. He didn't steal the game, but the Stars played a solid game. No glaring mistakes, looks like they did everything they wanted. Vegas was just better.

For being a Stars "podcast", there's sure a lot of "Vegas" in the first 15 minutes of this video. That aside, the Pavs change was because we lost two of our forwards to injuries. DeBoer had to scramble to put together complete lines. Also, you hardly even talked about how bad our Dmen played. Harley caused another goal because of his poor passing and low puck awareness. You can talk all day long about our forwards which are indeed underperforming, but if we can't even break out of our own D zone and prevent turnovers then we're cooked. Give our boys credit too, there's a reason we're the top seed

If the Stars are to have a chance, they need to use their speed and be willing to take a hit to make a play. If they do that they can crawl back into the series. Vegas is big but not as fast imo. Plus their goal tending is shakey, put pucks on net from everywhere. Pavelski needs to do what he does best, go tip in shots! Go Stars!

I wouldn't feel this way if they were giving all they had and just coming up short, but this organization is pathetic. They don't even try, and hiring Pete and wasting maybe the best roster in hockey on the worst system in hockey is the epitome of this

As a Vegas fan, we tried to warn Dallas fans back then. DeBoer has this very indifferent aura to him, which is bad in the playoffs because there is no urgency or energy from the coach. He is okay as an Xs and Os coach but the intangibles that are required for a team to win the cup are going to have to come from elsewhere in the organization.

I'm Colorado fan,& work at Ball arena-but when you got Vegas instead of LA-I almost felt sorry for you guys -despite how much I dislike Dallas.But that was no reward-Vegas is not only the defending champs but also the most talented team in the NHL-when healthy.Maybe not in top end,ultra elite talent-but depth wise,& in All Star/quasi All Star talent.And ya-we have the 2 best dmen on any West team-my opinion-(Makar/Toewes)Ibut Vegas is deeper on defense. I still picked you to win in 7-but I also said Vegas is the most dangerous,& best 8 seed in NHL history...maybe in NHL or NBA history. If Duchene,& Marchment weren't on your team-Id probably feel sorry for the Stars-lol.In all seriousness though-it really isn't fair you win the West,& have to play them. We have our hands full with WPG-but I am so glad we didn't finish 1st now,& I felt this way before the playoffs started.In fact-when you beat us in Denver in that late showdown game-I told some coworkers at the arena-who are much more casual fans-that it just might be a blessing in disguise for us losing that game.Certainly for the WPG-Colorado winner-my opinion.But itd help if Dallas could at least extend the series to 6 or 7. It wouldve been somewhat of a reward for you-had LA ended up 8th-but if Vegas did I said we were much better off playing WPG-or anybody else in the 1st round. But I don't totally write off Dallas-but ya gotta win game 3 or it is.
