Sue Ellen’s happiness and identity (at least how she saw herself) was being JR’s wife. Unlike Pam, Sue Ellen married JR relatively young at the age of 21, while Pam married Bobby in her early thirties. Sue Ellen never lived an adult life on her own prior to meeting JR at the age of 19 or 20. She went from being raised by her mother to being JR’s wife and JR had a BIG personality as did Jock. I’m sure when she first got married she was overwhelmed.
@@friedchickenicedtea She could have been the Blueprint for Carmella Soprano. Think about it, Carmella has no identity except being Tony Soprano's Wife. Remember the episode when Carmella came home and she was all alone. AJ was with his Father while Meadow was at Columbia. she also found out the hard way that without being tony's wife, she was a nobody in the inner circle and her so called friends all but abandoned her.
They evolved so well on this show from the outsiders to total dominating women who fought and loved for their families! Pam could slap the cocktails out of Sue Ellen! LBVS
Sue-Ellen's mother ruined her as well as younger sister Kristen. By training them to seek their well fare only through the status of rich, powerful men such as J.R. Pam was fiercely independent and put Sue-Ellen in her place for insulting her. Money, title and position were all that mattered to Sue-Ellen!
Derek Mathews Until the 1985-86 season when She was on skid row. During the "lost" season..Even though that season was lost it was one of My favorite seasons. And from the lost season on the New Sue Ellen Formed. Giving Victoria P..the short end of the stick..XD
Don’t get me wrong; Linda Gray is an amazing actress but sometimes her character of Sue Ellen could be just as nasty as JR. especially when it comes to social stature, wealth and especially position
I know. In season three in the episode Paternity Suit, Sue Ellen could've had the chance to leave Jr and be with Dusty. But when Jr threatens divorce she looks like she's shaking in her boots when really she had nothing to lose other than the Ewing money she could've took her baby and leave. John Ross ended up being JR's sure but the way she reacted shows her true colors
I love Sue Ellen and I love Linda Gray, but she always seemed to me to be so much older than she really was. Was it her drinking and giving up on herself? Was it just the darker hair? Or all the above combined? Then they would have these two in a scene together and Pam made Sue Ellen age even more.
Think Then Send Depression and oppression can take a toll on you. Notice as time moves on she actually begins too look more youthful than she did in the earlier years. As she let down her guard and opened up a bit and also fight back against who and what was bringing her down, it showed in her physical appearance. I often refer to her as the phoenix or butterfly of the Ewings. She is the one who goes through the most changes of them all.
@@MsTexas73 I agree. She was gorgeous when she met Dusty, the year she was with him and when she was on her own in her condo. She looked very young. Then they chopped her hair and it instantly aged her. I so hated her short hair styles on her. I think one season she looked tired when she went through her own divorce, but then again another season came and she looked very young again, it was out by the pool (maybe a Peter scene) and her face looked like a teens face. I thought the same as you while watching the seasons as I knew her age when the show started and they were trying to have her play a much younger character. They seemed to use same hair color on Pam & SE for a bit. Here they both have brown, then they both have red. She is gorgeous and she ate a plant based diet.
Eagle Arrow It was Linda who decided to cut her hair. The show executives actually weren’t happy about it. However, I don’t have issue with her shorter hair, although I liked it better when it grew out some; and I do prefer her hair longer. But I didn’t think she looked older because of her hair. I did think that at times during seasons 5-7 (DVD seasons 6-8) the wardrobe they had her wear made “Sue Ellen” appear older than she was. We must remember that “Sue Ellen” was not the same age as Linda Gray. Sue Ellen was a good 7 years younger than Linda. Closer to Bobby’s age than JR’s. So some of the things they had her wearing in those seasons really aged her. I especially did not like the gowns they had her wearing to some of the OBB.
@@MsTexas73 Also I think Sue Ellen/Linda Gray is more a cool color type. Look at her when she`s wearing more brownish(warm colored) wardrobe compare to her blue, black/white, bordeaux (cool colored )wardrobe.
IK65 I think she looked good in some of the browns though. Her wardrobe in season 2 (DVD season 3) was pretty good. But yes, blues and greens look great on her.
Can't stand mark grayson,he see pam with sue ellyn having lunch and he just walks up and say hi,bullshit, then pam that tease should of said I'm married mark and that's as far as it will go,,Bobby should of dealt with him,
Victoria Principal was absolute perfection, but the Pam character was poorly written and very annoying. In one scene they would show her as having incredible resolve, and then in the next five scenes she would be crying. It just never felt right thematically.
I know what you mean. Her character was very uneven. Early on Pam was strong (especially in the first 5 episodes), then she started to become whiny, needy, neurotic etc...by Season 2 it started to show big time.
I agree, and I also think it was happening because the show's bigwigs wanted to show that Pam was being damaged by proximity to the Ewings. They didn't do anything resembling a good job with it, though. Also, they were telling the same story with Sue Ellen, and Gary, so another fully fleshed out story would've been overkill. Pam got stuck as the somewhat needy, somewhat naive goodheart.
I don’t understand why JR dying would have left Sue Ellen with nothing. After all, wouldn’t she have inherited any assets, money, and assets JR had? Seems to me she would’ve been on easy straight and better off without him. Lol.
+Derek Mathews Sue Ellen made a remark automatically assumed that Pam use men as a "meal ticket" to get by in life. Pam had a right to get offended and yes I couldn't blame her for smacking Sue Ellen.
+Derek Mathews In this episode Pam was working at a department store. In the previous episode she wanted to work to make use of herself. She didn't want to be classified as a rich housewife with nothing better to do.
Well, that's good. She needs to do something with herself, and everything. Be productive, do something with your life instead of being a rich housewife. That's all good.
That is why I loved Dynasty. These Texan women are totally controlled by their men. I just wish Alexis would waltz in and show these simpering wimps how it's really done.
Sue Ellen and Pam were not villains like Alexis. Dynasty devolved into a cartoon. By Season 4 Alexis wasn't a character anymore, she was a caricature. Abby Ewing was the best and well-rounded villainous female character on the nighttime soaps. Abby would have eaten Alexis alive.
@@richardgarcia618 I don't know about that. I think it would also depend on if they were on the same side of the game. Abby was more street smart, although I think Alexis would have outstarted Abby in the end. I always liked Abby better and could relate to her. I've always felt the same about Alexis and JR. I don't think many of their schemes would have worked out that well in the real world.
Richard Garcia On DALLAS, Sue Ellen had villainous qualities, but she was redeemable. Most often she acted with good intentions but just don’t cross her.
J.R. and Sue Ellen were too old to have children by this point. But J.R and Sue Ellen started a trend, because in real life, now a days people have children that are in their 20's while they are in 70's. A sicking way a life, I do not want to be in my late 60's and 70's raising teenagers or having children that are in their 20's. It does not feel natural.
