DAM, "Born Here", Hebrew/Arabic with English subtitles

Palestinian rap group DAM (Da Arab MC's, or "forever" in Arabic) created this music video about the life of Palestinians in Israel. They're from Lod, a town between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, so they're Palestinians with Israeli citizenship (often called "Israeli Arabs"). They usually rap in Arabic, but they made a Hebrew version of this song with a music video to get their message out to the majority of Israelis who don't speak Arabic.
You find out more about them at www.dampalestin... .
I've always wanted a subtitled version, so I broke down and adapted the lyrics from their website, to create this. I think this is one of the most powerful rap songs out there.
See moomtastic.com/... to see my extended comments on the video and its chorus.
By the way, a lot of people are confused about what DAM stands for, but it really is "forever" or "eternity". See the interview at www.democracyno..., where you'll find this:
TAMER NAFAR: Ill just correct you. Actually, dam is eternity in Arabic and blood in Hebrew. So its eternal blood, like we will stay here forever.

this song is in part a response to the patriotic israeli song "kan noladeti" - "i was born here". the israeli song's chorus starts: "here i was born, here my children were born, here i built my house with my two hands." in response, DAM sings "here i was born, here my ancestors were born, you won't separate me from my roots," and "here i built my house and here you destroyed my house."

It's funny - I'm an American Jew who was in Ramallah 2 years ago and I wasn't harrassed at all. Of course, I didn't come in wearing an IDF uniform, and I tried to treat people with respect, so I was greeted only with hospitality.

why fight with each other? can't you be neighbors and love one another? we are all people and we want the same things. We teach our children that "sharing is caring", but we can't seem to manage it ourselves. Hate and retaliation will get us nowhere; we are chasing each other in a circle of vengeance - eventually someone is going to have to stop and say, "Enough. You are my brother and I am ready to love you." Israel should be a place for anyone to come to find acceptance and peace.

On the way, near the house of Badran on the street leading to the mosque, I saw the bodies of seven young people from the village. A woman, 'lzzat Ibrahim al-Hindi

@opiegonebad "Utopia" was written not by some Vogue editor, but by Thomas More, based in turn on Plato's "Republic", so a slight dose of "utopianism" is maybe something that this world so pragmatically "cynical" just might be needing. This aside, GREAT VIDEO, related with an ethical topic, the crimes of zionism- a colonialist ideology accepted by "world leaders"and its monstrous creation, the unholy racist-fascist state of Israel and its nazi-like treatment of Palestinians.

Okay, well. My dad tried to explain some of the conflict to me, but i think i might've misunderstood, so no calling my dad dumb. But he said that after WWII since Hitler had done everything to the Jews, the UN attempted to get back land for the Jews or something like that. And when it had come time for the Israelites to get their land, they took the original land assigned plus some, if not most, of the Palestinians' land. Since then they've been fighting. I'm not sure if this is right. explain?

just stop! i'm an american jew and i'm ashamed and embarrassed by how impossibly self-absorbed these comments are (and pathetically argued). this discussion shouldn't even be about land. this is about the marginalization of palestinians with israeli citizenship. i think the fact that this is presented in fluent hebrew speaks volumes.

@DrCHPD Politically I'm neutral but as an ex-Christian (now proud hater of ALL religions) who studied Hebrew I know that DAM raps in Hebrew with lots of the underground leftie rappers in Tel Aviv - his battles with Sagol 59 are great! It ain't all black and white y'know... Damn (!) if the politics weren't about he would be free to be more artistic than atavistic, which would be great coz he has a great turn of phrase and flow...

this is quite sad. i just saw a movie called "paradise now" that presents some good points. i think that alot more israelis disapprove of how the israeli govt. is handling Palestinian relations than the world is allowed to see...and i think that violence is really not the answer (and that also includes suicide bombers). in my opinion, gaza and the west bank should be palestine and israel should be israel. both sides are to blame in some way and both sides deserve a homeland.

For sure, there have been a lot more Palestinians and Israelis protesting things like the wall and war peacefully, but sadly we dont see much of it publicised cuz the army always gives them a hard time. though in the army defense, they protest in areas they're technically not allowed in. But I agree, we need to make peace the same way mendella gahndi and king did, with heart, not with weapons.
@mites7
@mites7 16 лет назад
Well heres the thing, a few years ago, the Palestinians were commiting suicide attacks at a pretty horrible rate, with 2001-2003 being the worse years. But after that, the amount of israelis killed by palestinians was LOWER than the murders commited by israelis against israelis. 2007 had one death which is horrible but in that same year it was reported 240 palestinians were killed. Look at both sides otherwise you'll never solve the problem. Either one of you.

If it were not for the dogged determination of Hizbullah Israel would still be occupying more than 10% of Lebanon. Israel wanted to eliminate not only millitant members of Hizbullah, but also its constituents. Many people who join Hizbullah are ordinary Lebanese and Israel knew that in order to subdue resistance you must cleanse the land of its people. This is one of the central themes of Israel's expansionist policy.
@XyphonX
@XyphonX 17 лет назад
Completely agree, except for that "colonial" part. What I'm trying to say is, basically, there are people who want peace on both sides; let's give it a chance, and not go towards war all the time. This has gone on 60 years too much. 60 years of pain and sorrow and whatever you wanna call it, that need to end. And if, after that, Arabs will still be treated disrespectfully, then yes, my country is racist, and I fucking hate it. But let's wait. AMEN.
@86am
@86am 17 лет назад
I don't see how it matters that there are 22 Arab states. There are 37 Asian countries but that doesn't make it OK to steal land from the Japanese and then tell them to go live in China or Korea because other Asians live there and they 37 states. The Palestians are the only Arabs who matter in this issue and they are indigenous to the land. Israel should be state of the people who actually live there rather than a state for the world's Jews.
@XyphonX
@XyphonX 17 лет назад
Thanks for doing this in Hebrew, so that us Israelis can understand. I am an Israeli, an atheist, and not an Arab Israeli, and I still agree with this video. The Arabs in Israel are somewhat discriminated, though it's still better for them than in the Gaza Strip or West Bank, and I think the Israeli goverment needs to change that, and, in collaboration with the Palestinian Authority. (IF the hostile Hamas, Fatah, Islamic Jihad etc. stop being hostile),

75% of those massacred in Lebanon were civilians and 30% were children under 13. Israeli generals admit the war was meant to cleanse Shia from southern Lebanon and re-occupy it as part of "Eretz Israel." Southern Lebanon has important water resources which are coveted by Israel.

You are right Iran is home to the largest number of Jews in the ME aside from Israel. They are not Zionists and their leaders regularly criticize Israel. There are quite a few synagogues and there is a Jewish MP quota as required by Irani law. Google "Iran's proud but discreet Jews"

Lod is right near the main airport in Israel, all Arabs in Israel have Israeli citizenship, thus are fully entitled to welfare systems of Israel and have greater opportunities in terms of employment than Palestinians in the West Bank or Gaza (where employment levels are very high). Ask Israeli Arabs even on the outskirts of Jerusalem and they would not want to give up their Israeli citizenship. These rappers are singing about houses being demolished but that has never happened in Lod!!

Build out before your build up, basically spread the word to the ends of the earth then work on doing something about it. Chances are by then the problem will already start being treated. But I bet you 90% of the world has no idea, lets move this on to the international stage!

Which atrocities? The killing of schoolchildren on buses, sending rockets into cities to kill civilians, and then bragging about it in children's TV shows? No, wait, that's the Palestinians. Enough with the sarcasm. You're right, Israel has serious issues with human rights relating to Gaza and WB. No doubt about it. But there's no reason to demonize. And I do not appreciate you putting words in my mouth, it could be considered bad manners...

Interesting debate. I would love to here more and to post my opinion afterwards. I am from Serbia, btw, which means I am biased both pro Israel (strong historic ties between our nations, in particular during nazi ocupation) and against it (USA-like politics of brute force, heavy rightists); also biased to Islamic world (20th century, google "non-aligned movement"), and the opposite (500 years of problems with Turks, mujahedins in Bosnia, terrorism in Kosovo etc.). I will be followin your thread.

Do you wish that with every country in the Middle East or from the rival Palestinians factions? Or just Israel? Don't forget the Palestinians still don't have a united leadership. How can they make a deal with Abbas when he hasn't reconciled with Hamas yet? From recent videos and articles in Israel, the freeze is becoming real to an extent. We have the visible signs already, IDF and police clashing with settlers (turning violent), Netanyahu being called a traitor by the hardcore settlers, etc.

Plenty of Western countries give citizenship to foreigners who share an ethnic kinship with the country. Modern Japan, Germany, Italy to name a few. A Jew's right to immigrate to Israel and become a citizen is based on a mostly ethnic definition of who is a Jew. Your friend's denial wasn't based on animosity towards his non-Jewishness, but rather on the hard work of Jews to ensure that they will have a place to be.
@orangitan89

Nobody claims equality for Palestinians in the occupied territories, though some do get services Arab citizens of Arab countries don't get, such as access to medical care. As for Arab citizens of Israel, they have the same rights to voting and health services, though the state doesn't spend enough resources in the Arab sector. As for your French friend, the tech company probably assumed he was able to move into the country. They can't just hand him a work visa.

based on religion. NOT race. People of all races are excepted as long as they are jews(basically, there are other ways too). Western standards say NO ONE IS WELCOME how is that any more advanced? there is nothing wrong with setting an immigration policy there is no reason y you should be forced to let everyone in (this results in war ex. Kosovu, Georgia....) read the last part of my comment dont want to repeat myself.
@Crazylalalalala

its called immigration process. there are European nations that NO ONE can get in. Another unique immigration process, is in New Zeland. Where the ONLY way a foreigner can get in is if he marries a local, if that end in a divorce he HAS to leave. they used to be equals or more so until their leaders decided to call an intifada on Israel. Cant expect to be treated better when you call a war on the same country you want to be treated better in.

It's more self-defense than ethnic cleansing because Israel isn't trying to get rid of an entire ethnicity. That's actually the opposite of what they want. I hear this from my friends who are in the Israeli army and the police, etc. However, other Muslim countries are at least partially to blame for not helping their religious brethren. I am Jewish and I, along with many other Jews throughout America, do what I can to help out foreign Jews (ie fundraising and such).

while what is going on in gaza is very unfortunate and my heart goes out to the innocent people who are dying (on both sides) I still think the main part of the blame lies on the hamas group for drawing israel into this current mess. I know yove probably heard this a million times, but think its really true. If hamas had spent all the money that they got in aid on improving schools and creating new jobs instead of buying rockets (cont)

I like this song because it was broadcasted in Israel, the true terrorists, and spoken in Hebrew, the language of those oppressors. I just think that adds more to the sting factor. I actually have a friend who's medical missionary career allowed him to volunteer with the Red Cross in Palestine. He was arrested by an IDF soldier for treating a Palestinian child. He was 8 years old and had his leg blown off by an AK47. And speew, Hezbollah would stop if they were hiven a country again.

I don;t agree with all of what "stettleryouth" says, but Ashkenazim are ethnically related to Mizrahi and Sephardi Jews from the Middle East, and also to Arabs. Therefore, yes, they are Semites. In any case, more than half of Israel's Jewish population is NOT Ashkenazi. Eretz Yisrael/Palestine is a shared home to two peoples. It makes sense to split the territory, because both nations have justifiable claims and can't live in peace in one state without one nation dominating the other.

Do any of you even know how the Palestinians came under the rule of Israel? When Israel was first declared by the UN to become a country the "Palestinians" (A word not used until years AFTER Israel was made thus merely a emotional ploy) declared war on Israel, which by the way was going to be much smaller than it is today, but because of the war declared on them (First by "Palestinians" and then by the Arab nations around them) Israel became larger and even larger in the war of '68.
