My Dad said his biggest regret in life is that He didnt buy land in Dewey after the storm. He said they were literally giving lots away. He described it as a huge mess. Houses flattened roads buried. Beside the sand and standing water people's septic systems had been compromised. He told he had bought a Cadillac that year instead. I teased him and asked " where's the caddy now? " I'm loving your content. Please keep up the good work. It warms the heart of Sussex County boy who's a long way from home....

I remember the aftermath of this storm very well resulting in an intense sand cleanup from the streets that went on for nearly a year. My family regularly vacationed in Rehoboth and were shocked when we witnessed the alterations that had taken place. From North Henlopen Beach to Fenwick -- and probably on down to Ocean City -- a miles long storm cut "canal" ran the full length of the back the sandy areas where people sat and in some places right along Ocean Highway. It was certainly a health hazard (standing water, insects) but also yielded shells -- especially conches -- of many varieties never seen in such plentitude before or since. I still have those I collected all these many years since.

I remember driving around large areas in South Bethany m in the late 70’s - early 80’s seeing so many lots available for sale with inland access water access. Delmarva had been rebuilt by then but I’m guessing a building boom had begun. Sea Colony in South Bethany completed along the beach (after one tower fell down…), still forested areas between S Pennsylvania Ave and Route 1 in the the Bethany. I’m sorry that so many suffered from the 1962 storms wrath. I’ve seen photos, but film really makes it “real.” 😢😢😮😮❤

Vacationed in Fenwick Island during the '50s and '60s in a small cottage on W. Va. Avenue. Rode down with Dad some time after the storm to see how things looked. Our little cottage was still there but the Sand Dune Motel on the oceanfront was totally obliterated. Sand and tractors everywhere for a long time; I especially remember those giant orange earth movers running up and down the beach all summer afterward; to a nine year old boy they looked like monsters! I see on Google Maps now the marshland in Fenwick is fully developed. EVERYTHING is developed! I thought that wasn't supposed to happen? The tranquility and beauty of the coast is long gone. Now in North Carolina I've no interest in returning to Delaware or god forbid Ocean City, Md.
