On August 21, 2024, a U.S. Air Force KC-46A Pegasus tanker (WIDE12) and two F-15E Strike Eagles (NOBLE41 and NOBLE42) were involved in a refueling mishap off the coast of California. The aircraft were enforcing a temporary flight restriction during President Biden's visit to Santa Ynez.
During refueling, both WIDE12 and NOBLE42 sustained damage. NOBLE42 experienced hydraulic issues, leading to two aborted emergency landings before safely diverting to NAS Lemoore. Meanwhile, WIDE12, from the 931st Air Refueling Wing, lost part of its boom and made an emergency landing at Travis AFB. Despite the serious damage, no injuries were reported.
