People get so angry when Joan is said to be anything above good. Oh well, same old story really. I was at one of these performances. Flew up standby and stood in line for standing room. Literally got the last one. 👍❤️
I saw her in most of her roles from 1973 onward. She got the public very used to those money notes - she said, “one has become too much of a good thing, and the public expects maybe a little more than they should!” After a Don Giovanni, I remember a lot of people grumbling because they expected to hear a few high-Ds!
Late 1970s, you can tell she doesn't sound exactly like she did 15 years before but that high note is unmistakenable. Out of this world. Too bad the tenor is atrocious and makes it a hard listen.
Com grande respeito pela voz da Dame Surtherland. A representação de todos é tão cafona que, parece um filme de péssimo orçamento do início do cinema falado, e claro com atores dos filmes B do cinema mudo. Pobre Bellini. Horrível.
Thats the Bonynge influence 😮, a Master of Unintentional Kitsch, their entire company including Horne and Pavaroti were Kitsch in their productions (but not in the singing, perhaps Horne a bit in her singing with all those gargles)
The problem with this is Joan, rather than singing the written high b natural..and then immediately singing the high d..is that sg He stops singing. Allowing her vocal cords a small rest and amassing a big breath then sings the high d.listen to Callas in the same scene she does not do this and has a very impressive high d And sings the high b before it too,! You can have Dame Joan
Pause before high note was her signature trick, she even taught it to Renee... the result of the Pause is quite often like here the note seems disconnected from the rest of the music flow, nevertheless brilliant singing
