I think damn is Kendrick’s most ambiguous album, all of his albums leave us with a certain conclusion or answer but with damn it’s left to our interpretation as the listener. The way I see it is that the main message of damn is that you can’t make the world a better place until you make yourself a better person, hence why at the start of the album he dies but as he goes from wickedness to weakness e.g. pride to humble, lust to love, fear to god, until we get to the end he lives in the final song duckworth by avoiding death due to his dad doing good deeds having good karma from it, but if you play the album backwards which Kendrick said you could Kendrick goes from god to fear, love to lust, humble to pride until he dies at the beginning on blood. Tbh I can understand why he’d feel this way, coming of the most critically acclaimed and important album not only of the year but probably of the decade he finally thought his message would be heard from tpab, but when he saw what happened with blm, the amount of news channels misconstrueding his message and the fact that Donald trump became president which he references a lot on damn, he feels that he’s failed the world because he wasn’t that good of person and hence the message probably felt fake to him. Damn is not Kendrick selling out, it’s him depicting his personal struggles on a philosophical scale to the largest audience possible.

@@yo_itsjoshy He wasn't mocking Jesus, it's an allusion to how some people think Kendrick is their savior. In the track Savior, he literally says: "Kendrick made you think about it, but he is not your savior." It's also a reference to how Kendrick is divine in the music industry. If you think Jesus would be mad at Kendrick for that, then you need to read the scripture more.

I still cant believe how underappreciated this album is. Its so trippy and dystopic at times and Kendrick really left me with a message that things are NOT OK at that time, and they still aren't in many ways but I have to say the way the album impacted me when it came out was profound and chilling. It also makes Mr Morale that much more impressive. Anyway, good work, thanks for giving this album proper respect. edit: i always felt like people that didn't like this album really didnt appreciate Kendrick, and only fucked with him after the accolades he recieved from TPAB, and those folks didnt like the sound of DAMN because they probably didnt really listen to hip hop and were more backpackers types trying to look like they have diverse taste so they say they appreciate TPAB....one of the MAIN things that makes Kendrick Lamar great is his ability to blend conscious rap and mainstream rap....no one has ever done this on the level he has. So for people to say he went too mainstream on this project is just so ignorant to me it has always bothered me lol. anyway, namaste

I think the reason why some of Kendrick’s albums haven’t ‘connected’ as well is because people are too obsessed with making comparisons, rather than just embracing each album as it’s own entity. People are always looking to prove a point about which album was better, or which album was more ‘commercial’.
