This song is where Freddie took his last name..yes. Roger never gets his just due but his voice is absolutely amazing. Hard to get past Freddie for vocal versatility for the most part, but Roger deserves Kudos for always being there for those outstanding high notes and solid rock and roll backup vocals.
When it came to their music ,Queen NEVER took the easy route. They would work and experiment until they were satisfied with the sound. It ABSOLUTELY helped to have four musical geniuses in the band
Their work had to be the best it could be including the stage. You paid for a concert , video or record at its best. They always wanted their fans happy and satisfied. They gave their best.
Four guys got together to make their first album but instead of trying to make a catchy singalong album that will sell they came up with an album of completely out there fantasy based musical genius. Boy did it pay off in the long run!!
Only a genius group can write and sing these songs, so much talent . No other group can ever touch this group. They will be legendary forever. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
when you hear anyone else cover a Queen song you know just how good they are, even some of the artists at the freddie tribute show in '92 said it was difficult to hit his notes 👑✊🇬🇧
WOW! Of course, Roger has tremendous power in the band's vocals. He is unique in studio versions as well as live performances. Queen's phenomenon is in harmonies that no one ever did or does not do today. Thanks for the great reaction!!!
I was lucky enough to see Queen play live at Knebworth park in England. It was Freddie’s last live performance with the band. He was feeling the effects of aids and was diagnosed the following year. My favourite band since ‘76 when I first heard Bohemian Rhapsody
Yup. Back in the day Roger could shatter glass with his voice! Queen’s early music was definitely outside the box. Always a musical experiment and it paid off in a huge way. Their first few albums are my favorites 🤘
I always try to imagine the other 3 guys faces when they find out Roger can sing like that. They all 4 had such incredible talent. Freddie's voice was so young and pure in the 70s especially before he got vocal chord nodules. After he started smoking it got grittier. Then after he quit it lost that grit and I think his voice was fantastic for the Innuendo album. My Fairy King is one of my favourite Queen songs ever. It's the baby sister to March of the Black Queen, BoRap and Innuendo with all the changes of tempo. The Night Comes Down is a great Brian song from the first album as well. Thanks, David!
David, your reactions are priceless. You genuinely express yourself and it mimics our own reactions from 1973. Wowed then, still wowed. Queen will never be outshined thanks to four formidable musicians. Thank you so much. Keep up the great work 👍 👏.
Queen's debut album is beyond words. Fairy King and Great King Rat are stunning example of why Queen is amazingly legendary. It stays on top as one of my most cherished albums. World class musicians...
Well, in an interview Freddie says something like . . . to know about me listen to my lyrics. I'm thinking Freddie, the budding artist youngster with a little sister, and as a teenager even, scribbled notes that became songs we enjoy today . . . surely this song. EDIT: and notes from words he crafted for story-telling time with his little sister were embellished to become this song. Freddie was an artist thru and thru.
Yes, you're right, Freddie got his name from this song. Brian May said in the interview that after they recorded "My Fairy King" Freddie told him "I'm going to change my name to Mercury, because "mother Mercury" in the song is my mother". Brian thought he was joking 😄 But Freddie really did that.
Brian's guitar supplied a fourth voice in these soft harmonies...so beautiful. It truly is amazing that this is from their first album. As Brian has said, they were four precocious boys who believed they could do anything. They went as far as they could with everything they had and we are all the richer for it. I don't believe you have reacted to A Winter's Tale yet, the last song completely written by Freddie. It shows his appreciation for Montreux where he was not harassed by the press.
All early songs are so exceptionally beautiful. Glad you eventually got round too this one it's been requested a lot from the comments Rogers range gets everyone.
i was in our price records many many years ago and this track was playing on the sound system, i stopped and listened and i was hooked, and ive been a queen fan since then, fantastic album
Yes, Freddie indeed took his surname from this lyrics, he loved it so much. He was already called as Freddie by family and friends but his surname was still Bulsara until he wrote this lyrics.
OMG I saw this pop up on my phone but had to wait until after work to watch it. I just knew it would blow you away. It blows me away even now and I bought the album when it was released. Absolute genius from the start. I think you described Freddies clean voice perfectly too.....innocent....and Roger, well! Freddie did take his name from this song. Agree with another commenter, The Fairy Fellers Master Stroke and Nevermore. These have that similar vibe and Freddies beautiful clean voice. Thank you so much for doing this one. You are, and always will be, the best!
Not only was this the first album but according to the band they didn't have proper recording facilities due to their contract with Trident until Queen II. Also, Freddie selected his stage name from the lyric in the song Oh mother Mercury look what they've done to me
Freddies off their first album released 73 july but recorded june to nov 72 his other three tracks off the album were Great king rat,Liar and Jesus which were 3 tracks they did on their 71 demo also Brians keep yourself alive and the night comes down which is also on the first album also the instrumentals for seven seas which was completed for the second album
YES! Not the live version or Revisited (as that's a different track anyway) The production is immense... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IeBc-c1Yang.html
Queen, put together on a shoestring in the studio when nobody was using it in downtime. The demo version of this album is worth a listen, quite 60s in some of its style but they reworked most of it to what we hear today.
Awesome! Right from the get-go, Queen was destined for greatness! I love how their approaches to the realm of fantasy/mythology are completely original, yet sound familiar all at once. Their skills in lyric writing are phenomenal-so deep, poetical, and even delve into the philosophical! There is a fantasy show on Amazon called "Carnival Row" about the fairy/magic realm that is conquered by humans and how it's very similar in concept to the song, among other metaphors. Freddie also "named" himself in homage to Mercury, the Roman mischievous messenger God (Freddie would attach silk wings on the wrists and ankles of one of his early stage costumes, which he wore at The Odeon hammersmith '75). Check out the song "Fairy Feller's masterstroke", Freddie wrote it as a description of a 19th century fantasy painting by Richard Dadd.
Great reaction!! One of my favorites!! I go thru a slew of emotions listening to this song! ☺️ My favorite part is “Someone, someone has drained the color from my wings .. Broken my fairy circle ring .. and shamed the king in all his pride .. Changed the winds and wronged the tides .. Mother Mercury Mercury” …. AMAZING!! ⭐️🌟💫 Brian commented that it was really the first time they realized how good Freddie was on the piano! 🎹 🎼
The whole song kills me but from …I can not run. I cannot hide… I get chills every time . Fabulous reaction David!! I loved it when you heard Roger at the beginning … we don’t need more cowbell … we need more “ jackem’s “ 😂👍 love your reaction. Must watch again.
You should react to more Freddie Solo Stuff , Living On My Own , Mr Bad Guy , Love Kills , Let's Turn It On All of these got great Freddie vocals , you'll love it ;-) Edit : Forgot to mention , Love Me like there's no tomorrow , and Time waits for No One
Amazing reaction David I think I was spoiled being a teenager in the seventies we had so many good groups to chose from we were spoiled for choice they certainly knew how to play a good tune still enjoying 70’s music today great to see you reacting to queen again please please react to keep yourself alive you won’t be sorry take care x x
I'm glad you actually listen , just like I did the first time almost half a century ago , the first 5 albums are very dear to me , they are my religion .💯🤘
They were making 40 pounds a week. Absolutely fabulous. Every little thing about it. Listen to Freddie’s piano at the end with the guitar. Really listen to the words. Someone came and took his magic away. Mother Mercury. I cannot hide. What really happened to him?
I know you’ve reacted to this song live but knowing how much you love harmonies like I do can you react to the studio version of “you take my breath away.” The harmonies in this song are amazing and you just don’t get it in the live version. Great reaction as always!!
How many Jackems was that lol. We knew you would love it. Every instrument and vocal is just perfect. Can tell its early, canny jimjams you have on marra
LOVE this song, thank you for reacting to it!!! Freddie's rebirth with his new last name, after this song came I believe. I agree with you on harmonies today, Avi Kaplan's Full Moon, is a rare, good, modern perfect harmony song. I'd love see you react to that song, studio version.
Bit of fun for you. Try soul brother the b side of under pressure. It's basically queen song titles that make up the lyrics. See how many you can get. I think you may struggle with a couple cos not sure how much of their stuff you have heard. Oh and it's a great song too
Brilliant man!!, really love all of your reactions David. Please please please react to Ogre Battle, Fairy Fellers Masters Stroke and Nevermore as a tripple reation, you wont regret it. thank you so much for your Queen reactions, justbthe best.
Love this song! You should make Roger’s voice in the beginning your alarm 😂😂😂 Sorry I missed last night…you were on earlier than I thought you’d be. 👋🏼😘
You should react to Mother Love. It’s the last song Freddie recorded but died before it was finished at which point, Brian May finished it. It’s very sad knowing he didn’t manage to finish the last verse
Be sure to check out “The Night Comes Down” and “Doing All Right” from the debut album. All of the familiar Queen elements are in place, in their earliest forms. All they needed next, was the time and experience in good studios to hone their sound, and that they did…
Been looking forward to this liked it before I have watched it ❤️❤️ your face David was up there with In The Lap of the Gods 😂😂 maybe react to the whole album it’s definitely worth a listen x
for someone who never read he knew poetry very well! he said himself I hate writting lyrics I'm not a poet well he may have borrowed a little! but it's used in a different way from Robert Browning's poem "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" he changed 'dogs outran fallow deer ' to 'lions den with fallow deer 'honey bees have lost their sting 'horses born with eagle wings teath like pearls
Rogers voice was absolutely incredible in the early years. It was also incredible in the late 70's and 80's but that high rage of early 70's could not be touched. Love your reactions!
I know some people commented it but Freddie changed his name because he said mother Mercury was his mum, so he had to be Freddie Mercury. Great reaction!!! Please react to sleeping on the sidewalk LIVE IN US, is one of my favorite performances and I can't describe it
He renamed himself Mercury before they published albums. Freddy is a Virgo sun, and the ruler of Virgo is the planet Mercury. I think he got it from there because he also designed the Queen logo comprising the sun signs of the band members.
I saw a documentary about Freddie Mercury last year and on this video they believe Freddie got his last name Mercury because as young children he and his younger sister watched NASA I believe practicing moon landings on Zanzabar. Young Freddie and his sister Kashmira were intrigued by this. According to the documentary this is thought to be the reason he came up with the name Mercury because it was called: The Mercury Project. An interesting history of how he got the name, Mercury.
And their dogs outran our fallow deer, And honey-bees had lost their stings, And horses were born with eagles' wings: These lyrics come from the poem about the Pied Piper by Robert Browning. For a man who said he almost never read he must have had a wonderful education while at boarding school. His references in a lot of his songs come from literature and the Bible. What an enigmatic man was Freddie.
Still begging you to do Brian’s Good Company off of Night At The Opera. The last crescendo that sounds like big band music is all just his guitar. Everything in the song that sounds like a horn is his guitar. Amazing.
I get a kind of Sgt. Peppers vibe from this song in several parts. I know Freddie and the others really thought the Beatles were the heart of it all so I am guessing it is no accident that I am hearing those nods to the Beatles in this one.
Good morning was relistening to most of your Queen reactions an I didn't notice that is our bae ROGER 🤘😎💯 Right on GOD they were all four BLESSED .I am sorry but this first Album should have been more loved an rated on the charts !!! 👑💫⚡🤯⭐😝🙃
The opening is Roger Taylor not Freddie. Any really high vocals are done by Roger. Roger has a beautiful intriguing voice. I love the music he's putting out now as a solo singer. RIP FREDDIE MERCURY 11/24/1991 🌹❤🌹❤🌹
Birth certificate Farrokh Bulsara but he called himself Freddie when he was in school when he came to Britian he put his name as Frederick/Farrokh Bulsara introduced himself as Fred 70 used Freddie as his stage name 72 he wrote this song and decided to use Freddie Mercury as his stage name continued to introduce himself as Fred off stage
