The war with Covenant seems less like a fight for survival by the human race and more like it’s an inconvenience. Both in-universe and out. Like it sounds like the writers feel inconvenienced by having to write this big genocidal war going on against an alien empire so they push it to the back as much as possible.
@Gungrave442
@Gungrave442 4 месяца назад
The show has honestly to me always sounded like a team that had their own idea for a potentially cool story, but couldn't get it past the execs unless they tied it into an existing property and fan base. Like they have this dark, gritty, starship troopers meets BSG story exceeeeeeept unique content doesn't drive subscription #s like branded Halo content might. So the writers are forced, rather unhappily, to merge two radically different concepts. Like I could see the board meeting at Paramount where an exec digs their heels in that 'the viewership line is 30% higher if its Halo, we have to do it this way!' Hollywood at its absolute stupidest.

I am not sure that I would say that it is out of place or odd. Even with what we've seen so far, I think that those who are in the intelligence spheres are well aware of the threat they face, but are unwilling to admit it publicly. I think the show even addresses this subtly when Ackerson says that the people need to feel safe, and chief asks, are they? Ackerson's response seemed to suggest that they aren't sure and are nervous because they don't have a plan on how they want to deal with the Covenant. Season 1 made it clear that the UNSC doesn't have a strong grip over the other human colonies, and I think thye are playing politics to avoid large scale panic and unrest. If anything, this is the most believable part of the show so far, because it is exactly what governments and militaries do today when under threat. I for one am waiting to see what season 2 brings us overall before I decide if the show is a write off or a gem in the rough.

As some one mentioned on discord the general initial vibe I'm getting from reviews are this: "Is that S2 definitely better it aligning more to the games and books. But there still clear hard deviations that older/hard core fans will still hate it, BUT the product is good/great for lenient fans and mainstream audiences that they can be hooked on." in that regard the studio can see this as a success and improvement because they got the mainstream and more lenient fans on board, and that's always the main target due to their number over older and hardcore fans. They only listen to hardcore fans when the general fans and audiences universally agrees with them like S1, but if there is clear divergence between them the older and hardcore fans are always on the wayside, because studio can afford them to be because they have the others now.

How has Halo been so difficult to adapt into film/tv. Its really not that complicated of a story I dont get it.
@xunk16
@xunk16 4 месяца назад
I don't know... starting from scratch, the pacing and golden one liners of the games would be pretty hard to deliver on an episodic basis. The first 6 games were so well made there is quite literally no filler and no parts that could be left on the cutting floor. Now from a showrunner's perspective, this is a problem for an adaptation, since there is not quite an audience outside of gamers for an action packed story told entirely from the point of view of a single character. Furthermore, there is also the fandom of the comics and novels to appeal to, which clearly cannot abide by the same kind of golden standard. So the show has to be a mix at some point. Therefore, one must be able to deviate enough for the expanded universe stuff to stick just right to the unmissable canon stuff. Where it becomes incredibly ridiculous though, is that the whole darn scenario was already written down. So even if they want to take a bird view of it all, they shouldn't get THAT lost in messianic tales. Why did they want the hero that much? Humanity was supposed to be the key here, not just 117... I guess that wasn't Marvel enough. Then again, 343 had already jumped that gun before the TV crew was even given the green. There was another youtuber that came with the idea that it would have been perfect to take the first game's 10 missions as a skeleton for a 10 episode seasons. I tend to agree. From there, all one has to do is to tone down the mission parts and replace it by stuff never seen before. Like marines on the ships and other sites (Show us the Chip Dubo episode!); grunts messing their way reservoir dog style, while surviving the silent cartographer's beach and planning an ambush for Chief; a remembrance of Halsey's project while Cortana is exploring the Halo's network, etc... From there, if you really got a problem with nothing new happening with chief, one could always do some flashbacks of stuff never shown before. This story about the fall of reach suddenly including 117 could have fitted into that, as an anthology insert. If they had only tried, I'm mostly certain the audiences would have forgiven the aloof pacing of the anthology bits if interspersed along a narrative that anyone could have been hyped for. But no. Like Peter Jackson's LotR before them, they just didn't thought the narrative's pacing and choice of structure was important. They thought they could let improvisation replace poetry. Top it all by having 343 still forcing down their forerunner retcon above the Bungie "Marathon Sequel" angle; and what we get is a show that tries too hard to make MC special, a big name super hero for the ratings, and not just a dude that was so used he doesn't even know why he wanted to win personally anymore. Realizing all the way that it doesn't matter, and that he kinda likes what he has become. Point is, making a decent adaptation of anything is kinda hard. Making one of something that was polished to the point of such perfection is a tall order to perform a long shot on the first try. But there is simply no excuse for lacking respect that much to the original that you don't even know what your subject is anymore. And sadly, that does appear to be what happened here. So really it's not that it is complicated... it's that some people still think they can pull a masterpiece without putting in the effort. (Read / Watch / Play the darn original material, it's not that hard!) Everyone wants to be Stanley Kubrick, except most doesn't realize the guy was lucky to not be hated more for all the crap he pulled. (He forced C. Clarke to ignore his own novel in order to be able to get a sequel published!) Meanwhile, what the world might really need is more Neil Blomkamps, Vincenzo Natalis and George Millers. As for the producers that should try to prevent that kind of low effort bull; they sadly have learned through Bayformers and Star Wars that money doesn't really care. Worst, some vampire shows of the last three decades have proven that some people just don't pay attention to continuities at all, not even from one scene to the next... That addiction is gonna be hard to cure.

I'm a 40 year old dude who played Halo: CE when it came out. Hell, that's the reason why I got an Xbox. I played all the rest of the Halo games as well. I even read most of the novels about the expanded universe. I love Halo. I love the Master Chief as a character. Watching the first few episodes of this aborted fetus pretending to be a show made me physically angry. Much of my gaming days were pure Halo. Not only did this show manage to shit all over those memories but they couldn't even get the lore right. They don't even understand the reason why The Chief always keeps his helmet on and why he doesn't speak all that often. There's absolutely no heart in the story. They fucked up the entire point of Halo; Master Chief. From the beginning of the story where John as a child is noticed by Dr Halsey for being an exceptionable boy, until his transformation through augmentation and training into a Spartan; John-117 IS Halo. Without the real John, there's no heart. This series has no heart. They don't even understand the basic concepts of Johns' character. He's super-human but he isn't. He destroys entire platoons of enemies by himself but he still doubts his leadership skills. He still struggles with the guilt of sending a fellow soldier under his command, to die. He constantly fights within himself over what it is to feel human. THAT is the heart of Halo. He doesn't speak often because he is deliberate in everything he does. Because the internal struggle of understanding his place in the galaxy is always on his mind. The heart of the character of Spartan John-117. This abomination has none of that.

I was at the premiere with the Q&A with the new Showrunner, Kiki and Pablo and I think I have some small insight. First I want to say every aspect of the show has improved, the dialogue is more natural, the writing *slightly* more subtle, the action significantly better directed, the lighting makes the suits look better, the CG is much better, the music is slightly more Halo and the suits which were already the best part of the show got better range of motion so they can use less CG and more wire stunts. That said, I don't know if that's enough when the bones of the plot stay the same. The showrunner, David Weiner, said at the premiere that he wanted to make the season more like his inspirations, Saving Private Ryan, Fury and Band of Brothers but the biggest challenge was staying true to the original vision while adding his own. He basically said he's course correcting but there's only so much he can do without changing what came before without directly stating that. Making a Halo adaptation is a fraught venture from the start, it has to be handled very carefully and they didn't do that, and now they may be in a hole they can't dig themselves out of. ALSO I SHOULD MENTION David Weiner said he played Halo 1-3 ODST when they came out, but went back and replayed them as well as playing Reach the first time to do it justice. That's at least far more than the previous writers could say, and it shows so far with adding Visegrad relay and Sword Base instead of "Reach City" now.

kudos for a balanced and rational take, rare to find in this context and in youtube comments in general sometimes. Grateful for sharing your insight, and I didn't know that the showrunner had gotten replaced but it sounds like a better more dedicated fit. I'm watching it to see where things go. I like it for trying to be different, for the most part. But I also can laugh at and enjoy what it gets wrong or questionable. At the end of the day, if I want the "bible-accurate" experience, I'm always going to go to the source material. This series though, has some unique personality and grit, and creativity (given the/your stated caveats) that I admire, as well as the passion from the actors and set/prop designers, that just makes it beautiful and interesting to watch and unfold.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there's two main elements to the good halo games we loved. One is the focus on fighting men and their struggles against a superior foe, as it fits into the broader narrative of the war. The story takes place on that knife-edge, where humans are a short shove away from extinction but there remains the tiniest, most unlikely strand of hope to hold on to. The second part is the cool factor of the military industrial complex. Seeing organized humans employ real, smart strategies and awesome weaponry/vehicles to achieve a tactical victory.

A sort of test run to see what the public would prefer more, while introducing a wider audience to the franchise. S1 seemed like it was trying to be its own thing while this season seems like it going for the big blockbuster feel. Big name writers, producers and composers. All this will hopefully end right before they get to the actual game. Then we get a movie based on the first game and another “reset”. Just doesn’t make a lot of sense for paramount to pour all this money into it with makeup artists, visual effects artists, props etc only for them to cancel it right before they can actually turn a profit on it by having a seasoned crew who knows what there doing. Pablo even says there trying to get to a point where they can become efficient enough to produce more seasons with in a reasonable time. I’m really just trying to make sense of everything.

Thanks, it sounds they really did learn nothing from season 1. Maybe they even doubled down on it too. What I liked about the Reach arc and humans initial war with the Covenant, was that the humans realised they were on the edge of annihilation. They put aside all their differences for the time and worked to prolong their survival for as long as possible. Victory wasn't even on the cards. They were losing. And losing badly. Then MC and few key individuals gave them a fighting chance. They tipped the balance. If it wasn't for Cole, Halsey, Keyes and the Spartans humanity would be dead. It should be enough to grant them immunity. That's why I was pissed off how they treated Halsey and the old Spartans later in the games. I loved the expansion of the lore, but I hated some of the directions they took.

Wow.... You'd *think* they'd have learned the simple lesson: MC is an amazingly skilled (and lucky) soldier in a war. The focus is the war and the nearly miraculous circumstances that change the outcome of that war from certain loss to surprising stalemate. It rather explicitly *cannot* be Halo if they don't focus on that, as the point of the universe is this war is so existential that humanity is united against the overwhelming odds. Circumstances consistently served to demand nearly every person able to use a gun on the front lines. What were those conscript numbers again from the books? Some billions of conscripts, tens of billions more refugees, and several dozen planets with most of their populations glassed? Something like 24-25 billion dead? But no, some weird dude in a suit's gotta tell MC how disappointed he is and removes him from active service while the single most important planet to the UNSC's military (save, arguably, Earth) is going to be glassed. I haven't been this disappointed since Star Wars got picked up by Disney.

@hydra_lisk This is my main issue with the series, it's like they don't understand how iconic grunts are for Halo. They're the Covenant's marines, the backbone of their armies, with admittedly squeaky voices, but a hulking physique that would make them seem very intimidating when in scenes with normal humans, most of whom are only a few inches taller than a grunt, and nowhere near as bulky. They'd make good opponents in a scene where the humans might feasibly be able to win without plot contrivance, while still putting up a decent fight, and maybe adding some humor. The grunt hijacking was great, for the few seconds before chief stomped him, but I want to see grunts interacting with people so the audience can see that even the weakest members of the Covenant are still frightening aliens.

Love you Eckharts, but I have a feeling you misunderstood a few parts of the first 2 episodes. I agree that Kwon is uninteresting, and Maki's return is disappointing. However, your complaint about the dinner scene kind of confuses me, as Chief isn't there to have the dinner scene. He was there to question Perez as to why she lied to Ackerson, I do think it's dumb that it happens this way because of the fact that chief should have been recording the small battle at the beginning of the season, but they could have used the fact it was insanely foggy in the area as a crutch. The episodes are much better than season 1 already, and that's simply because the writing is more concise alongside the dialogue. Your description of the 2 episodes makes me feel like we didn't watch the same show. I agree with some of the mistakes made in episodes 1 and 2, but it feels like you want about 10 times more action in the show. I understand that feeling; I want more action, too; there wasn't enough in the first 2 episodes, and you are right about the last scene of episode two, where the Marines used little to no tactics. I also have noticed how people have been ignoring the propaganda in the show, like how it points out in the medal ceremony that the UNSC fakes how much personnel and equipment is there. Which was well done. However, I think the biggest thing I have to disagree with is the expectation. It feels like many people expected the show to scrap everything and start over. But for one, people need to recognize how the industry works with contracts for actors, the fact that many of these scenes were probably shot prior to the writer's strike, meaning before the change in the head writer role. The new lead writer and showrunner are trying to fix many of the mistakes made in the first season, and expecting a complete 180 is unfair to the thousands of people who worked on the show, the actors' and writers' strikes were happening for over 4 months as well. These first few episodes are likely the fringes of what the original showwriters were doing. After watching the first two episodes, I only realized this a few hours ago. But the show needs time to be fixed; I am not saying it excuses the mistakes made last year, but it's also disingenuous to assume they could fix such a turd that was season one in 1 year. Realistically in 8 months, with the strikes occurring throughout the year. I also think you missed many aspects of the first 2 episodes that were good, which shocked me as I learned a lot of lore from you when I was much younger. I would have thought you would have been happy or intrigued by Ackerson and the role he would play in the story. So, as someone who sees it differently personally, it feels like you missed a lot in the episodes. I recommend watching them a second time to kind of gauge why many of us do like it. I love political intrigue in war shows. It is important to the show as the action only has meaning when implications are set. I also love the scene of Rizz going to therapy as someone with family in the military. It was wholesome and reminded me of talks I had with my uncle, who went to Iraq and Afghanistan from the 90s- to the present day, and the man is a petty officer. I think you went in expecting full-blown action, the complete disappearance of all of last year's actors who were uninteresting. But the whole reason we wanted a Halo show was for two things: to see live-action in the Halo universe and the story around the war. You said you didn't see much about the war in the first two episodes, but I disagree entirely. I saw a faction struggling to keep its facade of patriotic fervor to the point they lied entirely about what a marine did just to boost morale, and that they even faked all the equipment and number of people to hide the apparent number of losses. The Dinner that the Chief goes to shows what the affluent people in the universe hear about the war and how unserious many people, like Perez's brother, take it. How the overbearing intelligence agency can intimidate low level marines into complying. Or about how much information is hidden, allowing people not impacted by the war to interact with those who have been impacted and show the differences between refugees and those who think the covenant isn't a danger. I don't like the Pirate aspect either; however, it's very similar to insurgent writings from the books. So I will recommend you watch the 2 episodes again and look at the details in and around the world. Look at how things are portrayed to us as viewers but also to the people in the world. Sorry for making this long, but I just had to say my piece; I am an analyzer of stories and also one who can read the fine details, so I tend to see messages that are being mentioned or shown more often than others. It's one of the qualities that's helping me with my education and history degree. I think episode one is a 7/10, and episode 2 is a 6/10, already higher rated than half of season 1. Love you and your content, but maybe just take a second look and analyze the show for a second. Granted, I am just an optimist, but I was much more intrigued and happy to watch the show. Granted, some parts piss me off, but I also recognized that some of those are nitpicks.

I think you’re forgetting about how bureaucracies work. It’s about covering your ass on both ends and that’s exactly what’s happening with MC. “Well there’s no way he actually saw that despite the cameras recording it!” Yet the USNC Infinity was being designed and constructed for the war. Take a look at Mogadishu or even Afghanistan. When the politicians got out of the military’s way, what happened? As for the underground, there’s never been a war in which the criminal element of society hasn’t affected the war effort. WWII you had European smugglers getting refugees out of German occupied territory, the Italian mafia supplied the OSS (CIA’s precursor) with information and someone had to supply the French Resistance with weapons and ammo. That’s just one war mind you. Imagine if the UNSC had to transport supplies by their lonesome. 90% of the UNSC would be ineffective (I’m basing this off of the US military’s structure if you’re wondering).

I don't get why 343 continually fails to build on the most interesting aspect of Halo: Humanity. There's a reason why some of the most beloved stories told in Halo are the most tepid ones- Reach, and ODST. Even when these themes aren't the focus, they were always present, it's *HUMANITY* vs. the Covenant, not Master Chief, as much as people will make you believe. While 343 has failed to provide the story of the striven, average human battle, they did make a, in hindsight, fairly compelling personal story in regards to Master Chief's humanity. This makes sense as a rhetorical tool as Master Chief is ubiquitous to the powerful stoic- but in trying to match that humanizing element they overstepped, with the TV show (I'm using they because it's easy, I don't actually think 343 was what made this show bad). Basically, they sought to show humanity persisting *despite* of the Covenant, where the more compelling narrative is persistence *in spite* of the Covenant. Show us the criminal, individual elements of the UNSC, but use it as a reminder of what hangs in the balance, not cheap Sci-Fi. Halo just keeps catching L's and it's infuriating.

Theres a few things it improves so far. What I'll say right away is that this show does Halo right by the music, the effects (for the most part), and the character designs. When we get actual Halo stuff going on, you know, Covenant battles, glassing, ect, it succeeds. That's what we Halo fans wanted. We wanted to see gritty combat, Spartans and Marines fighting the Covenant. We wanted to see the supersoldiers that idolized our childhoods and younger years fighting against the unstoppable Covenant and worse. What we actually have though still horrifyingly misses the mark, putting it lightly. Emotional Jimmy Rings taking his helmet off still, poor adaptations of the characters from canon, and even worse, a story that doesnt have any canon connection to the original game. I mean, this show was announced in 2013....we had YEARS to get a grounded CANON story. It could've literally been about ANY Halo Character and still be canon with faithful ties and designs to the games or novels. I would've even been happy having Silver Team be their own canon characters with their own story. We couldve even got a faithful live action retelling of the games, or even the novels, like Ghosts of Onyx, or First Strike...the Flood! It absolutely baffles me that we got this instead. This is why it is acceptable to think that whoever greenlit any season or episode alone for this in MS or 343 Industries should be purged from the companies for it. Also, what the Hell is up with Palpatine Makee? We pulling a silver timeline Johnson survival now for her? Halo has infinite potential for story telling that can be canon to the franchise, I genuinely don't understand how this was favored for something new and unique in the Halo Universe, or again, a faithful recreation of the games, for those who wanted to see gritty, gory combat that we know from the novels and first games. The only way the show really will hit the mark on anything right is to literally do away with it and give us a canon story that is faithful in every single way possible. I dont know why that is so hard for us to get. Why can't us Halo fans just get a live action show that is badass from start to end, with a CANON universe story? We have 20+ years of Halo lore to use! :/

#AskEck I've had the idea for a little while now that Lucasfilm should pursue adapting George Lucas's sequel treatments in comic form and getting Lucas himself to consult on it. This may sound like an out-there idea but Lucas was clearly unhappy that the story of his sequels was never told, he's had a life long love of comic books as a medium and even though he's retired, he's always been happy to consult on projects whenever Lucasfilm have asked him to (Solo, The Mandalorian, Dial of Destiny, etc). For Lucasfilm's part, they're fine with producing non canonical content like Visions and the rumored 'What if?' series. Marvel Comics has also just announced they'll be publishing 'What if?' Alien comics and Dark Horse recently published a comic adaption of one of James Cameron's old drafts for an Avatar sequel, so I don't see why Lucasfilm can't get either company to give Star Wars the same treatment. It could even be nice way to celebrate the upcoming 10 year anniversary of the beginning of the sequel trilogy, taking a look at what it could have been. So, what are your thoughts on this? Do you think it's an idea Lucasfilm should pursue?

What crazy, I watched a great Halo movie this weekend and it was called Battle Los Angeles. Military dudes doing military things. Figuring who the alien enemy are and what their weakness and taking them out. That's all the Halo show had to do. And maybe "one" sub-plot and that's it.

I’m confused, does Eckharts not know who Colonel Ackerson is? The guy who hates Halsey and anything she created (like the Spartans) so much that he tries to literally kill the Master Chief in the comics and makes the Spartan 3 program to one-up-her. So, in the show when Ackerson is poking holes in Chief’s story, questioning his stability, etc. I see that as him trying to undermine Halsey’s legacy (the Spartan 2s) so that he can replace them with his new, and improved Spartan 3s.
@NixonRules963

He might not have read Ghosts of Onyx, although he also makes a big appearance in Fall of Reach. Personally I really like Ackerson as a character, he's dedicated to sabotaging Halsey even when her Spartans are clearly a huge boost to the UNSC's war effort, but during his death he actually goes out in a very badass noble fashion.

@@twojacksandanace3847 I did, did you? Cuz when Eckharts mentions Ackerson he’s confused on why he’s trying to undermine the Chief when that’s basically Ackerson’s entire deal. He hates Halsey, and by extension the Spartan 2s, and tries anything to undermine that legacy so he can instil his own, the Spartan 3s.

I can confirm, after watching 4 episodes, I have no idea who these reviewers are that are saying that S2 fixed all of the issues from S1🥴I've been watching since launch and I really just dont get it... And after this last episode, I'm really lost with who is saying that this season is vastly improved. I didnt even mind S1 that much. Yea it had its many issues but over all, it was still "Halo" sorta🤷🏽‍♂But S2... Nothing even fits. They throw in canon names/places but nothing is as it should be. Keyes, Akerson, Reach, none of it. I wouldnt be surprised if by time we actually see a Halo that even that is like a cube or a triangle or something completely foreign to what Halo is supposed to be. If this show gets a S3 I'll be impressed. Because if this were Netflix it wouldve been the first show that they wouldve pulled midway through binging S2.
