I earlier saw a shorter clip of this with just Daniel Farson interviewing James Wentworth-Day, and actually thought it was a Harry Enfield comedy sketch.
Racial conflict will always be present while cultures differ from each other. European and British cultures are not far removed from each other and so we coexist peacefully, but look what happens when cultures from some other continents move into the UK..........
I think people from the West Indies at that time were, in some ways, more British that people born in the UK. Barbados was, and possibly still is, known as "Little England", for that reason. I think people coming from the Caribbean where unprepared for the racial strife they encountered, coming from countries that where almost entirely black (with Asian migrants) to "the motherland". Respect for the monarchy, for example, was perhaps greater in the Caribbean than in the UK. I think Caribbeans where not as foreign as people might have thought. Remember that these people came with British passports not foreign ones.
@@afrocentricalbion I don't think that's true, what you've been hearing about them is propaganda, iirc crime started to shoot up as soon as they came in and there were multiple race riots that happened during this period. The point is they still aren't British no matter our history.
What hasn't been pointed out is this: Nobody would be permitted to express thoughts on television today similar to Mr Wentworth-Day's. Most (including myself) would disagree with him. However, is it healthy for a society to patrol the thoughts of it's citizens, who live in fear of committing a 'Hate Crime?' Is our society richer for having silenced Mr Starkey, for making a comment not even half as offensive as Mr Wentworth-Days? Fascism has many faces.
Literally everything Wentworth-Day was the truth. Go look at the statistics on divorce and domestic violence for interracial couples. Especially the ones involving whyte women and nonwhyte(especially blk) men.
Yes, it was 1958. In 1958 both parties bought into the post-war Attlee-ite consensus, both parties accepted nationalised industries, both parties wanted full employment no matter what the cost, both parties wanted decolonisation, both parties welcome massive immigration into north Kensington/Bradford/etc. Since 1979 both parties have moved away from this socialism.

Thanks for posting this fascinating and honest video of the social attitudes of the 50s. Seems to me that the situation is worse now for race relations albeit there are more mixed race couples and children in the UK.
In Brazil its a mixed society and very racist against blacks and mixed. Interracial does not end racism which is upheld by the elite class and psychological programming.

Great interviewing from Farson. Glad to see that JWD's odious views have been confined to the margins where they belong. To paraphrase the Tory caricature himself - when speaking about nudists on another Farson programme - it is pleasing that what would once have found some favour would now leave him exposed to emphatic derision and ridicule.
I saw the James Wentworth Day section of this at the weekend on a "get-together" with a bunch of friends. Someone put this on and we all thought it was side-splittingly funny, because we thought it was a modern day spoof, along the lines of Harry Enfield's Cholmondly-Warner character. I'm AMAZED to discover this was a real programme (just a year before I was born). I fervently hope that we've improved in the intervening 60 years, but when I hear some of the xenophobic views expressed in "man-in-the-street" interviews, I wonder. Nut job is the right epithet for this excrescence of a man - a Tory, real life version of Alf Garnet. I would like to think that his comments these days would attract a custodial sentence!!

I remember the late Victor Lewis-Smith utterly lambasting Wentworth Day's sentiments. And wow, those thoughts that came out that MP's mouth is abhorrent even by 1950s standards.
I too find Wentworth Day's views appalling. He did write a series of charming books about East Anglia and wildfowling - though even there his extreme right wing views do emerge.
True - he preferred white water fowl to black water fowl - claiming they never mixed as their off spring built wonky nests and fouled up the water with their mess!
