Boxing/MMA has to be one of the hardest sports you can get permanently injured and one moment can define your whole career, not to mention how much training and nutrition goes into the sport.

In my view there are 2 categories. ⚽️ has the most competition, hence why it’s the toughest to become the best. If the criteria is the most mental and physically demanding then it has to be combat sports or the toughest and longest endurance sports

They should divide the sports in different categories. (1) Team sports without weapons (European football, American football, rugby football, basketball and etc). (2) Team sports with weapons (Ice hockey, field hockey, lacrosse and etc) (3) Individual sports without weapons (MMA, boxing, sprinting, swimming and etc) (4) Individual sports with weapons (golf, tennis, car racing and etc).

many ppl get jobs in football and can be at least decent contributors simply because of their body size especially on defense. same goes for basketball. a lot of ppl if they’re tall will make a team or if they can shoot spot up 3s. just because QB is hard doesn’t mean the sport is harder than others

This entire list should just be various combat sports. Ball/team sports are pretty silly when you think about it. It's like, "hey, I think I'm a better athlete than you. To prove it, let's get like a ball, a stick, a net, some pads, a field, like 20, 30 teammates...." Forget that. The hardest sports say, "hey, I think I'm better than you. So let's stand in front of each other and figure it out."

Sports that have a prerequisite to even attempt let alone do competitively are ones that should be on this list. Like hockey, gymnastics, cheer, diving and things like that.

You have to consider sports like boxing and MMA among the most difficult in my opinion. Because it's only you versus the opponent as opposed to a team sport where your teammates can help you out to some extent.

I've played bball, football, baseball, golf, track, n boxing. The hardest skill in any sport is easily learning how to hit a baseball; not just contact but hitting it n making the baseball go where u want it to go(grounder, line drive, HR, pop-up n what part of the field.) Learning how to hit a golf ball is a very close 2nd. Boxing is the hardest sport cuz unlike most sports there aren't different skills/fundamentals, everyone has the same skill set(ex: no different positions like team sports, no different techniques like MMA.) Ur in a ring vs an opponent that is trying to do exactly what ur doing: hit each other while not getting hit. Both participants have equal time to get in peak physical condition, work on strategy, n mentally prepare to perform the same skills.

Tennis is one of the hardest. On your own. Hand eye coordination. Endurance for HOURS. Different surfaces. Ability. Speed.

One of major drawbacks with this discussion is no one defined the term "hardest." What makes a sport hard to play? Is it physicality? Is it agility? Is it endurance? Is it the likelihood that one could get hurt? Is it access to training/coaches? Is it mental toughness? All of the above? For me, really none of the sports they mentioned make my list. My definition of what makes a sport hard to play would be: a sport in which the physicality, learning curve and skill to entering that sport is the highest. That's why I wouldn't consider basketball, soccer, golf as hard because you just take a guy or gal give them a couple reps in and they can figure it out. Will they be good? Will they be elite? No, of course not. But they can play it. Pick up basketball, soccer - all the middle-aged, retired folks who play golf, tennis, pickleball for the first time proves it. Here's my five in no particular order: ice hockey, water polo, MMA, gymnastics, skiing (any discipline).

Football is my favorite sport but my years of playing and coaching made it clear that football is the easiest sport to find a role in and contribute because it is so individualized from position to position; little fast guy, all you can do is kick, big guy. There is a spot for everybody. Football does have the most grueling offseason for people that want to be great at it, and it does have the hardest position in sports but as a whole it is the easiest to get involved in.

I'd put golf over baseball. Skateboarding should also be high on this list, but no one on ESPN wants to consider an action sport a sport.

When I saw the list, even though football, baseball, and basketball may involve if not completely involve that physical collision or hitting, I don’t think it’s as comparable to boxing and MMA etc. sure u cn have career ending injuries in almost any sport but when it comes to the combat(fighting) sports u r literally aiming to knock the person out without pads, or protection and there r no “flags” or penalties unless u keep hitting someone’s crotch area. Just kind of thinking about how they aren’t mentioned.

Hockey is extremely hard, requires immense skill

I played football, basketball, baseball and soccer and Yea idk if it’s the hardest sport but the hardest skill is definitely trying to hit a baseball. I could never get good at it. I thought 60-70 mph fastballs were extremely difficult to hit and these guys in the pros hit 90-100 mphs like nothing. Not to mention in the pros they don’t just throw fastballs either you have to worry about curveballs, sinkers, sliders etc

Baseball's is the hardest. In most sports if you do everything perfect, most of the time you will see success. In baseball if you have the perfect swing and timing, you will be lucky to get 4 hits out of every 10 at bats. In baseball the best players in the league tend to change every few years. Back in 2017 We thought yelich and bellinger were going to run the league for the next 10 years at least. 2 -3 years later they were basically out the top 100 list.It's easier to be out the league in baseball because there are alot more younger players gunning for your job. There are alot of really good role players in MLB who still had alot to give who had to retire because no team wanted to sign a 30 year old utility player and would rather give that spot to the 21 year old unproven player who doesnt have much high expectations. There's alot of NFL and NBA players who are only signed becaue they give "veteran presence" and are practically just another coach that players can trust.

They are all hard in different ways. I think mad dog was coming at it from what’s the hardest to actually be a professional at. Idk where curling comes in but Dan was coming at it from what’s the most physically demanding. Like long distance running is more demanding than something like golf but golf is much harder and takes way more skill and mental toughness.

I paused right when DO said qb is the hardest position in any sport because it isn't 😅 goalkeepers are a thing in hockey and soccer. Literal last line of defense. One mistake, one miscalculation, one slip, could cost you the game. QB is still tough, don't get me wrong. But their mistakes don't always directly lead to scores the way a goalkeeper's do

The hardest sport is the one where it would take the average number of people (normally distributed), having zero experience to actually be able to do something that creates a meaningful action. Anyone can pass a football and basketball. Baseball, curling and golf definitely need some time. Have you seen public figures trying to pitch? Lol Dan's list is not only self serving but also hones in on mastery "after the fact". He said it himself when singling out QB as the hardest position in any sport to play. Incidentally, he also played QB.

I play football (Soccer), american football, basketball and golf. I tried playing hockey when I moved to Canada and it is by far the most difficult one. If you take a person who has average athleticism and has never played any sport in his life, American football would be one, if not the easiest to play.

I was a 3 sport athelete in high school and a college baseball player. I have generally been able to pick up any sport and be pretty good at it. Getting good at golf is a different story. Sure I can hit it far at Top Golf and have fun but actually playing is so much different than anything else.

Everyone talks about hitting a baseball but no one really talks about fielding it. Try turning a double play or catching a fly ball at 100+ MPH exit velocity. Easier said than done

You have to define what makes a sport hard better to be able to make this list properly. Is it physical endurance, hand-eye coordination, difficulty to make it professionally, etc.? Golf is probably the hardest sport to play professionally because it's an individual sport and there are only 125 or so people on tour at any given time. It's not the hardest sport to play physically, though. A lot of non-athletic people can play it at a decent level. But to be elite, it's extremely difficult. Football has to be the hardest sport physically, because you have to be ready to take a beating and be in excellent physical condition (unless you're a kicker). Hockey is tough because you have to skate and be able to move the puck around. Basketball is tough because going pro is dependent on how big and strong you are, and you can't control how tall you are. Obviously you have to be in insane shape as well and be able to shoot, pass, etc. It's all really hard, I'm not sure how you'd even make an objective list.

Boxing MMA and I'll say Muay Thai /Kickboxing can go top 3. Then Supercross/Motocross and MotoGP and Car Racing would be the top 5 I think. All of those you need everything you need co-ordination to the highest level and skill and precision head to toe, you have to be able to compute and think extremely quickly and you have the physical aspect. Those sports are so physically demanding combat sports speaks for itself but bike racing and car racing is so physically demanding just ask an F1 driver about the G Force they have to pull on a turn or a super cross rider how hard it is to control a bike on a dirt track that stuffs insanely hard.

While QB might be hard, the sport of football as a whole certainly isn’t the most difficult. Only have to keep it together for 7 seconds for the play to end, then you’ve got 25 seconds+ to regroup.

Tennis no.1 by far. The average person can kick a ball, throw and catch, can play a bit of ping pong, can shoot or pass a basketball... Now try and get the average person to hold a rally on a tennis court. They will be lucky to get a rally of 3 shots. I always say that tennis is the sport that requires the most effort and work just to be able to do the bare minimum. Maintaining a basic baseline rally that lasts over 5 shots might take months and months of practice, whereas pretty much anyone can learn to kick or throw a ball in a very short amount of time. Also, athleticism and physicality cannot save you in tennis like they can in American football or basketball, for instance. If you are just strong or tall or fast, it doesn't mean you will be able to do anything in tennis. You still need to have all the shots and good technique etc. even to be competitive at all.

The level of competition makes a sport hard. The NBA or NFL are clearly the hardest leagues to play in, in the world. You can take any NBA or NFL player train them in any sport for years and they will be able to play at a professional level. You cannot say the same for any other sport going into the NBA or NFL.

in football QB and CB are the hardest positions to play other than that the rest is just athletic ability. In my opinion.

Dans argument is that football requires both toughness and finesse, especially at qb. Mma and boxing demands a majority toughness and finesse and speed helps. Golf is all finesse. Baseball is mostly finesse. Lets be real the hardest part about baseball is hitting the ball and thats not because of the physical demands of the action it takes but because of the variety and trickery created by the pitcher. No one knows why curling up there though.

should be a few different lists: 1) hardest to play with no experience. you can get through a baseball game with no experience. golf you won't be able to get through 18 holes. 2) hardest to play at a pro-am level. 3) hardest to play at a pro level. what else is there? what's a better way to organize these?

I’d go with basketball, football, baseball, soccer, and golf or tennis as far as the traditional sports go.

ESPN needs to bring back James Blake on the show to educate the panel once again on how difficult tennis is. 🙏🏽 Check out Jamie Foxx trying to return a pro's serve in Chris Eubanks. 😉 While I do agree that all these sports are difficult to get to the highest level, Dan O's list are all team sports. Tennis is an individual sport so you don't have your team to rely on when things are going bad. Likewise, all of those sports have a shot clock ⏰ to it. Tennis doesn't, which means you have to beat your opponent rather than rush to a big lead and hope the time expires to win the match.

For an avg athlete hockey is by far the hardest. Other sports you can make a decent attempt. Try skating as fast as you can with your head up with the puck. Prob 9 outta 10 just standing with skates on fall over trying to take a slap shot.

Tennis, swimming, hockey, playing quarterback specifically, soccer, jiu jitsu/MMA. Basketball and baseball are hard but you can actually play a pick up game with your friends even if you're not good. You literally can't play tennis with someone and have a fun or productive time unless you get to a specific skill level, same with golf but I don't consider golf a sport I consider it a skill.

It’s hockey period. You have to be an advance level at another sport (skating) before you can even learn to play the sport. Not to mention the cardio and toughness it takes to take hits and land on an extremely hard surface and not soft grass. Also you gotta be able to fight as well. I don’t even watch much hockey and never played but in my opinion it would be the hardest sport to introduce someone to. Tons of people who were just natural athletes picked up basketball and football late in their teen years and have made it to high levels. That just isn’t happening in hockey. Baseball would be number 2 because of the insane skill it takes but hockey in my opinion requires just as much skill but also has a huge physical demand.

Basketball is not hard ... its the only sport on the list I've ever been good at. Its the one game that immediately rewards you for effort and gives you different ways to contribute to the game.
