Bottom line, the 49ers will NEVER win a Super Bowl under Shanahan. 3rd down, 4 yards for a touchdown. You have the OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR in your backfield with depth in Mitchell and Mason, both beastly runners and he calls a pass play! That’s 4 down territory! 2 chances to get a touchdown. Absolute horrible decision.

Belichick had a coach and all his job was to do, was analyze and look at unique situation vs your opponent that may come up. Situational football… I feel Mike Vrbal is excellent at this…why? Are you aware of the definition of a blitz? Bringing 5 or more men to rush the QB, which the Chiefs absolutely did on that play. They actually brought 6, but one pulled back out to spy or cover. So, it confused the offensive linemen, which led to Jones going unblocked.

Spot-on assessment of Shanahan. He does have an ego but does not pay attention to the little details. His team is always not fully prepared due to this. He needs to learn some humility, which seems impossible. How many super bowls does he have to lose? Regular seasons and playoffs are not the same as the Super Bowl. Other teams might screw up and lose, but the best prepared team will not give him the game.

Fair assessment. As a Niners fan, I'm still hurting. With this new playoff OT rule, there is zero upside to receive the ball first because even if you scored a TD you COULD NOT win there, you still had to play defense next to make a stop. But if receiving the ball second, the defense would have had a chance first to take as much risk as possible to force a stop, a turnover or the "upside" for a defensive score to win there. And no matter how the defense did first, you COULD NOT lose there and the offense could come on next and do whatever necessary. It'd be insane if Shannahan knew of the new rule and chose not to defer. And even if he knew and decided on the poor strategy on purpose, he didn't prepare his players for it.
@cl5619

Agreed it's not about winning or losing the game but rather situational awareness. When they picked off mahomes earlier in the third quarter it was time to pound the ball up the middle and make sure you get at least a field goal out of it. When he needs to find plays to get the momentum back he really struggles. There's no shame in losing the game as long as you are playing to your strengths and if they stop you , you can live with it.

_Thank_ you, yes, as someone who only watched this sport starting last year I noticed the same thing. He seeks control (great play-caller). But people who seek control feel like they have it when they make conjecture. The next step ("like these yahoos talking here who somehow 'decided' Kyle's ego was responsible even though 1) they don't know he has one, 2) that it even expresses itself this way or 3) affected any play-calling) is to state the conjecture again as if it were a fact, then proceed from there. Treating one's conjecture as fact releases endorphins. & a _LOT_ of human behavior can be explained by just that. Again, how these 'experts' 'concluded' that Shanahan's ego was 100% responsible for losing this game is a nice microcosm of this. Once things don't follow his Preconceived Notions (PNs) though, exactly like you said, Shanahan doesn't plan for those contingencies. He's not _quite_ as bad as Matt Lafleur (who seems to require a minimum of 20 minutes playing time to adjust) but he always thinks he'll come up with something if needed & never truly does. I don't even _like_ Andy Reid. He has forced Every Single QB Into playing His Way & it had always failed. One can't even say Mahomes suits him. He's changed how he calls games to suit Mahomes. But Alex Smith didn't suit Reid's schemes nor did Donovan McNabb. Both played better with short passes & more rushes mixed in & Reid hates doing that. But he *does prepare* way better than possibly any other HC. The problem with Not Preparing is this: being in a situation you didn't prepare for causes stress. When stressed, we defend our PNs. Look at Sean McDermott, Mike McCarthy & now Steve Wilks: all of them revert to calling Familiar Plays like how people eat Comfort Food when stressed during games. Not plays that work: just whichever ones they've been familiar with the longest. Shanahan may not quite do that, but the human instinct is to search first among Familiar Plays, not innovative ones. So you are correct. I'm just more or less detailing "how humans get there." This is way worse in politics. We *can change* many a social problem. But trying stresses us, voting For Candidates to then leave all such decision-making in Their Hands = familiar, so people keep reelecting *politicians* as if that meant 'Appealing To 'Government'' as if 'Government' were a Living Person who listens to us _through_ politicians... let's face it logic doesn't rule most people.

(I didn't even notice he'd done this in this game though). It's coming up blank. I _did notice_ he tried long passes even though Purdy seems to have no accuracy whatever beyond 20 yards, but since that went _against_ what I saw last year, I saw that as a good thing & not The Usual. But I'll take your word for it - now that you've clarified it. 🙂

Exactly my thoughts, ego and hubris cost them this game. I think he 1000% thought they was going to score a td on that first OT drive, I think he knew in his head he wanted to go for it on 4th down but didn’t have the balls to turn down the field goal and later get killed in the media if he didn’t kick there and then have a chiefs fg win it.

Towards the end of regulation when the 9ers had the ball, Ms ChatGPT could have done better playing calling. They had it IN THE BAG! I could have done better coaching. You wind every damn second out of the play clock, and you run staying in bounds. Then you kick a field goal. It was a no-brainer. And I am a certified idiot and I knew that.

The coaches ego had no choice but to get in the way. These two coaches according to the media are the greatest play callers ever. If Andy Reid's ego stopped calling all his 3 and out and then punt plays and turned more of the command of the offense to Patrick Mahomes using the no huddle, most Chief games would be a blow out. Instead all 3 super bowl wins were come from at least 10 points down to win.

Wait his ego? But then your disagreement is he didn't have the ego to go for it on 4th down? They were in the driver's seat, all the had to do was not allow a touchdown. Everyone acting like they should have given Mahomes the ball, and if they'd scored a TD even if they score a TD they lose to a FG.

Well, if Shanhana hadn’t decided to replace Gould with Moody who missed 30 percent of away field goals in college and kicked the ball too low on that extra point resulting in a blocked extra point, niners would have been champions with a score of 20 to 19. I was also surprised they didn’t go for the touchdown on 4th down.

First, Shanahan said that if his team gets a field goal, then they'd have to hold KC to a FG..and then the game would be in their hands. He never said his team would absolutely do everything at all costs to get a TD. Second..if, as he later claimed, his defense was worn down and tired, why didn't he call a timeout during KC's drive so that they could catch their breath and regroup?

The one thing that hasn't made sense is when the players say "I didn't know the rules". Theres no new rules for that, its called football !!!

The 49ers seem like a different team with a healthy (or healthier, I know everyone's banged up) Deebo Samuels. That makes them freaky and takes the pressure off the other receivers who were often reined in. When he's healthy, he also runs the ball, which wasn't in the game plan for sure. Not saying Shanahan doesn't have a big ego, just like his dad and his 30,000 sq ft house he does. But the Niners are freaky when Samuels is feeling his oats and not so much if he's limited.

If the Niner staff was really using their "analytics", then they should stick those flawed analytics back up their anals. 3 points does you absolutely NO GOOD in that scenario. It's score max, or go home. Shanahan has always played scared in the big moments - the exact opposite of Dan Campbell - or Andy Reid. Shanahan has always been afraid of what people will think of him if he takes a chance and fails. So, he invariably fails. (Thank God he's not a military leader!) It's a football game! You have the ball at the goalline. You've played to the final period of the entire NFL season. You win it or go home. Shanahan does have an ego problem. He's a choker. His team has to now pay the price for his misguided and cowardly conservatism...Dan Campbell, same situation? That dude's going for it. And a 2fer...

Just the fact that the Niners didn't really have an overtime plan and the players didn't know what the rules were proves the team was out coached by Andy Reid and his coaches. But also remember when Andy Reid was always close but could never win a championship with the Eagles. He learned and maybe Shanahan will as well.

Why does anyone care what happened in OT? The game should have been done and dusted by halftime. Niners dominated the first half, yet insane Shanahan calls at key moments kept putting Purdy into 3rd and long. CMC and Mitchell were grinding down the field and Chiefs had no answers. The game was lost by Shanahan's insane play calling. I can't recall any game where I honestly felt the coach was sabotaging his own team like this debacle.

People are continuing to pin that Atlanta loss on him, he wasn’t the H/C or the D/C. He played a part, but that loss can’t be pinned on him solely. If they defer KC probably takes the ball right down the field and scores a TD anyway, because SF defense had just left the field.

More than that: he was having success with running the ball and he got scared that he might not get 1st downs so he switched to passing, same mistake the Ravens made. Also that defense has no idea what "stacking the box" means. They play soft and leave lanes open. Mom could have hit Rice for that first down late in the game. That defense gave the game away again. 9ers are not winning a super bowl with this head coach. Never. BTW? Butker can kick it from 70 yards if needed. He does in pre game warmups every week.
