Dan Price’s underground home, art & philosophy on $5,000/year

When Dan Price returned to his home state of Oregon in 1990 he was determined to avoid mortgages or rent (he and his family had just finished caretaking a mansion with a heating bill of $500/month). He found an unused meadow in Joseph, Oregon, and began renting it from his neighbors for $100/year (in exchange for cleaning downed trees and repairing fences).
His first underground structure was actually built to shelter his home/office, namely his copy machine, essential for publishing his zine “Moonlight Chronicles” which he started in 1992 (it was sponsored by Simple Shoes for a decade).
www.moonlightchronicles.com
In his meadow paradise, Price now also has an underground "hobbit hole" style home, as well as, a composting toilet, a propane-powered shower (using river water), and a pinewood propane sauna. He’s not hooked up to city water (he discovered a spring on the property), but he’s hooked up to the grid and it’s been approved by the county and city.

Sometime in his life he learned many many skills. He is highly educated. " I built" means he knows how to build, he knows how to use tools and how to make safe plans in an unconventional environment, that takes ingenuity, creativity, and knowledge of how to build what he needs. Also worth mentioning due to overwhelming similarity our own little bit of Communism and socialism right now in America. Thanks to Joe Biden extending the covid relief and allowing Americans to not work when they're perfectly capable of working they just don't want to do it for the pay that they were getting before and just like socialism and communism people like me that went back to work only three months after the lockdowns started. I, along with many others are paying for all these people that refuse to work or pay there rent when they make more now than before in some cases. The produce I E taxes of an individual's labor is divided up to all those even those that are not worthy or contributing to society. I E communism and socialism. And oh look our economy is failing who knew? We are having our own little Venezuela. True stupidity is repeating others mistakes over and over. Learning from others failures always cost less energy than producing them yourself when you already know the outcome. If only that Maxim was common sense we wouldn't have socialist and communist teaching our kids to be extra stupid.

😍"I DON'T wanna have security. Security is a myth." 🤩 💖 I have no words to express how much this episode feels like a million kisses to my heart and mind. When I first saw how he was entering his home, I thought, "No way..." As I continued to watch, I started giggling and was tickled. I realized the spaces he lives in are about the size of how much I use in the house I am in. I am blown away to also see someone thoroughly enjoying and living from the context of NON-permanency and yet, FULLY enjoying every aspect of it. All ideas of insurance, government assistance, grief about large bills for heating and cooling, need for more and more space, etc all fall away when there is truly an alignment to how the animals of nature enjoy ALL of the ABUNDANCE of nature. 💖 💖 It is not a surprise that I "found" this episode because for the last six months I have thoroughly enjoyed having a wonderfully simple and solitary stress-free life. It has taken over five decades to feel this way is what feels the most natural way for me....I watch sunsets outside my window, listen to the birds sing, and am mesmerized by the beauty of shadow and light playing on the leaves of the trees almost right next to me. The squirrels run around and take a quick glance at me, then go off their merry way. I read, meditate, hand drum, nap, eat a couple of small meals, and journal. I feel deeply fulfilled with minutes and hours which have no goals other than being. I still live in suburbia, shop at the supermarket once a week, and have a good bit to go in "editing" my possessions but, this definitely inspires me to get there sooner. 💖 Thank you for featuring this wonderful being living fully in the moment and committed to being in tune with the wise ways of nature.

+SoulfulVeg Unfortunately it appears it is at the expense of making someone else unhappy. THREE children requiring proper medical care and food do not pay for themselves, and one has grown up when one has created them. It's okay to hang on to childhood wonder, but it's problematic to run away from adult responsibility, especially when one has created NEW LIFE. I'd really like to hear from his ex-wife. I did like a lot of what he had to say, but tire of the "I don't want to grow up" people. They've gone through puberty, done drugs, had sex, etc --- you DID grow up and that should be okay. Your kids need you to be an adult. Underneath this lesson of simplicity is fear and selfishness, there must be a way to incorporate simplicity without that (and I have seen Kirsten cover such individuals or at least those who chose mates comfortable with this chosen lifestyle and reproduced accordingly).

Just wood, sounds of nature. The beauty is right under our nose. The trees, the rivers, the calm and peace of mind but we still believe we need to find it elsewhere. Chasing other things, status, careers, more more money in the bank. Looking at other people. Experience after experience. But true freedom starts with letting most of the desire go and flow with the river, you are where you are. Look within instead of out. Keep it simple. Reminds me of a book I read when I was young, “My Side of the Mountain” about a kid who runs away and lives in the base of a giant tree. Great book. Oh gosh he just mentioned it.

What a magical man living in a magical land! Traveling the world with a hot tub & outhouse, by a river with a pier & it all looks 100 yrs old!! I loved everything he said about growing his own vegetables, & especially how he read about the Native Americans & incorporated some of their traditions, you can see he loves his family & knows what's important in life & is living life his own way. You can see the joy on the children's faces as they explore. Great interview, amazing property! Absolutely amazing!

I like this guy. He's very articulate and has such a calm but not dull personality. And the house (and especially the studio) are great.

I watched this video years ago. This is my second viewing, and I am sure as a person can be that I will watch it many more times as the years roll by. Ever since he was a boy, Dan knew what he wanted. He visualized and then created what, for him, is a perfect life-much respect and admiration. Cheers

Oh man, "My Side of the Mountain" was my all time favorite book from 5th grade! I even raised a fledgling (blue jay) that I named Frightful. This guy is living the life that 10 year old me always dreamt of. 41 year old me still has plans... some day. Living a comfortable, happy life shouldn't cost anything but the time and effort you put into it.

I loved every bit of this. This dude could make a ton of money building these types of buildings for others cuz its just beautiful. Glad he doesn't care much about it and keeps himself happy.

+Gary Mayo: Sadly, he is only living ''unto himself,'' which is frowned upon by God. To Him it's a very selfish way of life as we are all here on earth to develop our talents, gain knowledge abt everything in the Universe, on the earth and under the earth; serve our fellowmen and take responsibility for our families. How can he take care of child support without a job, or ''do unto others...'' if he only has himself to account for? Not good when the Lord asks us at Judgment Day, "what did you do with your life?"

+Yunginspirit This guy as more talent than most people : Building, drawing, photography, music .... As for his family we don't know what really happened but it is possible to live that way even with kids (people still do so in the world, tribes, poor countries etc...). Maybe it was just social pressure of having what people qualify as a "normal life" that let the women to leave with the kids, and maybe the kids will grow up and end up taking a 9to5 job with lots of stress resulting in health issue and then die, but then again who knows ! What will the lord tell you in Judgement Day ? Have you, like everybody else, trashed the earth and lived into a consumerism world where it is "better" to provide your kids with crap that'll lead them away from nature ? The truth is that right now your speculating waaaaaaay too much, especially when speaking in the name of god ! It's his choice of life, and, he seems to respect gods creation better than you and I will ever do. When he'll pass away, it won't be much of him left to trash the surroundings and his participation to society will not be in helping greedy asses slowly killing living things around and destroying whatever they touch. Unlike you I won't try to speak in the name of God (which is btw quite disrespectful to do so) and let him be the judge when this guys time comes. But as for myself I wouldn't mind opening the paradise doors to this guy and closing it for the random guy who spent his life working for an oil company, drilling the planet, and killing everything around him claiming it is to support his family. I'd rather not have a family in that case !

+Yunginspirit And what good are you doing to our planet? Sadly you are one of those who let an imaginary creature be the judge of too much stuff.. Look at what religion brings us.. :( This man lives his life in full respect of nature.

One thing I really loved about him was when he said that always wanted to live in a house like that since he was 14 years old. I think is admirable how he never let go of that childhood dream of his and made it into a reality. Pleasing his past self. Truly beautiful. As we grow older, we tend to shove our past selfes aside and forget that we were once them.
