I loved how he put Mary's dog next to Lavinia's photo. And then when he rushed out to war... he grabbed the dog and put it in his pocket, rather than Lavinia's photo. I hope the toy dog shows up in Series 3! Like Matthew has it in his pocket when they get married.
Same here! I totally agree with you! I find it hard to believe people hated her so much. I thought she was lovely, and cried when she died. I loved her and Matthew together, mostly because I felt Mary didn't deserve him. However, I am happy they got together in the end, because Mary was improving. But she had to earn him.
I never hated Lavinia. How can you even despise her?! She's so lovely and sweet. In my opinion, she's even lovelier than Sybil which is really saying something. I was so sad when she died. How can you create such a character and then just kill her off?! Imagine her pretty face in a coffin. It's so damn cruel. And that comes from a person whose favourite character is Lady Mary, so I had every right to hate her but I just couldn't. Not even Mary hated/despised her so how could I? LOVE YOU ZOE!!
I would say "didn't deserve him. I think that Mary improved through the 2nd season with the war, as they all did. I think that she still has issues to work through, but she proved herself worthy of him (by choosing to be kind to Lavinia and not spiting her...and being content, at least outwardly, with just a friendship with Matthew) and I think she earned him. That being said, Lavinia was one of my favorite characters on the show...she was lovely and sweet and I cried when she died.
I love Downton and Dan Stevens, I got ridiculously overexcited when I found out that we share the same birthday..that's when I realised I was a fan girl. I did like Lavinia, she was sweet.
Mary and Matthew are meant to be together whether they're right or wrong together. If Matthew was still alive, I'm sure we would have seen a bumpy marriage with lots of up and downs for the sake of a good story, but because Julian Fellowes knew in advanced that Dan was leaving the show, he wanted to give the fans the short joy of seeing the couple happy together and have a son before the tragedy.
"I'm wishing my weekend away" I'm wishing my year away! I keep forgetting that we have a Christmas special coming up and am desperately wishing for series 3. How the hell did I survive the wait between series 1 and 2?!
I completely agree! I also used the word "convenient" when I spoke with my friend about Livinia's death. I actually wished she and Matthew married. Mary doesn't deserve him.
Oh and in my desperation for the next series I forgot to mention that I like Lavinia, she really is lovely. It was hard to watch as I like both her and Mary, and I like Lavinia with Matthew, but I think Matthew/Mary definitely overrules them. The angst! Ooh I love it! XD One person I do hate is Sir Richard, I take pleasure in loathing him.
Yeah, I too felt bad for her that Matthew didn't love her in the way she wanted. I know everyone wanted Matthew and Mary together but I actually thought it was good for Mary to get an eye opener for a change. I just never got everyone rooting for her to go! If she'd been a cow, that would have been different. As it was, she was quite a sweetheart.
There is only one character I trully hate, mr. bates (ex)wife. I would never hate Lavinia... never even thought of that possibility... I do consider this writing a "bit" above the typical love triangle dramas which makes you hate one or the other... I did not know this was a such a high rated series, does make sense, it is a masterpiece.
I must be odd, because apparently I am on the rather unpopular side of really liking Lavinia and while she was alive, wanting her with Matthew more than I wanted Mary with Matthew. :) That being said, I didn't exactly mind when she died...because Matthew and Mary are still perfect together.

Mary is not nasty. She's just a product of her background and education. Class was very strong and important then and to abandon everything is not at all easy. Remember she was mostly going to say yes until her aunt persuaded her to wait. If Mary was nasty, she'd be meaner to Lavinia, but instead she was also really nice. As entertainment, Mary is a much more interesting character.
Sometimes the sub- plots beg to be excused. For some profound reason, Lavinia had to die AFTER Cora and Richard purposefully brought her back into the picture and AFTER Matthew announced their wedding. You saw how Cora behaved. And then later, ofcourse Matthew regains the use of his legs. I bet they really regretted Lavinia returning. Her intentions are honest and She is far more likable than Mary. I don't really get Matthew and Mary, not at all. Something about them is not believable.
i loved lavinia all the way long............i don't know why, maybe because she was the espression of the woman that loves , sacrificies ev erything and in the end she gets nothing
