i love how whenever matthew and mary argued, he always seemed to call her “darling”, “my darling” and say that he loved her. it just shows in a small way that his love for her was always bigger than whatever arguement they had and that is the mark of soul mates.

@@sneakymia1 You make some good points which I agree with except for one--Matthew was not happier with Lavinia.
@laurenstich1049
@laurenstich1049 8 месяцев назад
Exactly. Julian Fellowes must be admired for being thrown a monkey wrench with both Sybil and Matthew gone, but to his credit, he made Seasons 4-6 compelling enough to watch to the very end. But -- and it's a big but -- Downton Abbey was never the same and seemed to lose its soul with the death of Matthew, to me, the greatest loss of the show as he was not only the heir, but its moral compass. And I don't want to hear that he wasn't a good man because of Lavinia. Matthew was human -- he did love Lavinia, but was "in" love with Mary. Nevertheless, he was always going to do the right thing and marry Lavinia. And that's why Fellowes had to kill Lavinia off -- to free Matthew to finally be with Mary. But when he died, something very palpable was missing for the remainder of the series. A testament to Dan Stevens and how be brought to life the beloved character of Matthew Crawley.

8:29 Wretched failure is the right way to describe Lord Grantham. First he needed Cora's money to bail out the estate, then he ran it into the ground _again_ to the point where he needed another bail out. It's a pattern that's recognisable in today's corporate world.

Investments into companies generally come with shares which, if the company is successful, give returns. Robert foolishly invested practically all of the money into shares in a rail company that went belly up, which meant any income he was banking on the company to eventually return on his investment, any money that would have been going into Downton, disappeared. He didn't go and invest every last penny into the rail company, he kept enough back to keep Downton running for a while, but not indefinitely, and when the company went belly up he knew that was it. They were sitting on a draining tap with no more money coming in, so they knew they would need to move to keep the lifestyle, because at the end of the day, the money needed to fund their lifestyle is pennies compared to the money needed to maintain the estate.

I just can't imagine that a normal, decent man would have all the nasty comments and conflicts and arguments re not taking the money at that point. He was right not to want it before he read the letter. Mary was totally overdoing it and was horrible, selfish, cold and calculating. I just don't see this as well written as I cannot imagine that in real life, Matthew would be so in love with Mary who at that time was not a nice person, or at least I could not see anything good about her. She was not good natured, she was cold, stand offish, boring, not charming, not interesting. What exactly was a man like Matthew fall in love with so deeply is beyond me.

I thought their relationship seemed forced. I never understood what Matthew saw in her. When George was born he speaks of Mary as this incredibly kind, compassionate person. But I don’t ever recall her being anything similar to that.

@@HappyStars234 That's because you this moronic filter that makes you only see red for Mary, its not all black and white you know. Each to their own though.

She wasn't horrible, selfish or calculating. She was cold, but none of the others, except she was horrible to Edith, equally, Edith was horrible to her, and many other people too. You should maybe rewatch the show. She wasn't overdoing it, she was asking Matthew to take the money and use it for good, in her mind, Matthew should save her family, and that was how she was brought up.

Why is it Matthew going to inherit Downton Abbey? Anyway, so it was in his best interest to let Robert have the money or as Robert suggested invest?

Bravo on that clickbait title. He didn't once accuse her of lying, let alone LYING (why is it that these daft RU-vid titles must employ all-caps? Do commoners REALLY shout this much?).

This whole story line about Matthew and the money really made me exhausted by him. The whole “right thing to do” line was so tiring and silly, such an arbitrary concept preventing the salvation of the family estate was just such a ridiculous mindset. He was such a martyr and so self pitying about it all.

@@lxtatar7773 it was a good part of the storyline I agree , but his departure gave Mary so much grief ... which was a great part of the show and then all her suitors so LOL I'm still glad that bitter man was out of it
