In this video I show you how I regeared my Dana 60. This axle is from a 2005 Superduty and will be going into my Jeep Wrangler. This is a very complicated process and can be different for each install. This video is not a step by step instruction, but more of a means to help you decide if you want to do it yourself. Check out some more info online and do plenty of research before trying this yourself.

My final Specs:
Pinion Preload - 25 inch pounds
Backlash - .008”-.007”
Gear Pattern: Good haha
Be sure not to skimp on any steps! Make sure bearings are fully seated and lubed with gear oil!
Part numbers will be posted soon after I drink my coffee

Man, I think I’ve watched this at least 10 times. My 60 is just sitting there pulled apart awaiting to be re-geared. I’m 1 ton swapping and stretching my TJ after a nasty roll over. I’m getting so overwhelmed with everything and not having a single friend to help out sucks. I appreciate your videos man!

Great video! My rear UD60 starting making noise during acceleration and coasting. The gear oil was heating up and blew the pinion seal. Threw oil everywhere. Drained it and it was almost grey with metallic content. The pinion had little to no preload. I could jiggle it by hand. Not sure what happened but I am going to tear it down and probably do a rebuild kit depending on how the ring and pinion look. Probably going to order a new set of gears too because I am sure they have a bad pattern worn into them. Just Empty Every Pocket... fantastic video! I'll be using this for the front junkyard swap I'll be doing 👍

Great video! Way more detailed in the gear setup then the gear companies make! I've only regeared two jks. One rubicon and one sport. But for the setup bearings I put the new races in the housing and then made both old pinion bearings into makeup bearings and was able to put the shims where they were originally and pressed the new bearings on when it was all set up. Im not sure if my way was the right way or not. But I haven't had any issues yet. Anyways. Great vid and keep it up! If you're ever up near Michigan you'll have to make it to Drummond island for some wheeling!

One last thing. When you install the washer under the pinion nut, don't put oil on the back side, put RTV sealer so oil doesn't leak out around the splines.
@JKGearandGadgets
@JKGearandGadgets 4 года назад
Not entirely needed with a high pinion axle with a positive pinion angle under the jeep. On transfer case yokes and low pinion axles, yes it’s more needed since the splines can leak fluid.
@roberts5118
@roberts5118 4 года назад
@@JKGearandGadgets No that's incorrect. Pinion angle has nothing to do with it. The fluid is sloshing around and completely covers the pinion gear regardless of pinion angle. It needs to be sealed, regardless of pinion angle, unless you're not planning on driving it and leaving it sit there.
@roberts5118
@roberts5118 4 года назад
@@JKGearandGadgets there's no such thing as "more needed to be sealed". It's either sealed or it's not sealed. Your tires are either sealed and hold air or they don't lol
@JKGearandGadgets
@JKGearandGadgets 4 года назад
Robert S it hasn’t leaked one drop. Drove across the country twice, wheeled here in VA, Windrock Park TN, NC, Johnson Valley CA, Bigbear CA, sand hollow Utah, etc.
@JKGearandGadgets
@JKGearandGadgets 4 года назад
Robert S haha I’m not here to argue. Sure it’s a good idea to always do it, but on a high pinion it’s not exactly needed. Look at all the factory JK front axles, high pinion, no rtv... no leaks through the splines. A low pinion axle will have a higher chance of spline leakage. For example, I just regeared my Jeep gladiator. Do you think there was rtv on it from the factory? Nope. Did it leak? Nope

Pinion pre load is measured by torque to rotate the pinion. Carrier preload is measured is measured by total torque to rotate of pinion and carrier together.
@JKGearandGadgets
@JKGearandGadgets 10 месяцев назад
Negative, carrier preload is how tight the carrier sits in the housing. Ttr is still pinion preload, just another spec
@rockynixon3832
@rockynixon3832 10 месяцев назад
@JKGearandGadgets you subtract the TTR torque to rotate (pinion preload) from the TTTR total torque to rotate(Pinion plus carrier pre load), which gives you the carrier pre load. That's what Dana says, anyway! That's how I set mine up, and so far, so good.
@roberts5118
@roberts5118 4 года назад
That would also involve pulling out your carrier one more time so your only measuring the force it takes in inch pounds of the pinion turning and not the additional force it takes of the pinion turning the ring gear and carrier.

Watched the video like 10 times so far so I know what to do with me axle. A couple of questions: When doing the initial pinion preload setup, what torque are you setting the pinion nut to? What other parts do I need for a sterling rear axle in regards to the yukon bearing puller? Why did you not do a pinion depth reading? Extra step or is not really needed for this dana 60 axle setup?
@JKGearandGadgets
@JKGearandGadgets 4 года назад
Don’t worry about torque #s on the pinion nut. It depends if your using a crush sleeve or a shim setup. Crush sleeve setup, you will need to focus on pinion preload, as it changes with the amount of torque on the nut. With the crush sleeve eliminator (or shims), just tighten that sucker down

Ok at the end of the video you installed and locktighted your pinion nut. This is what sets your pinion bearing preload. It's great that you torqued the nut to whatever number of ft.lbs you "think" is correct but the proper procedure is to tighten the nut crushing the crush sleeve until you have the specified number of inch pounds of rotational torque required to turn the pinion just as you did earlier.
@JKGearandGadgets
@JKGearandGadgets 4 года назад
I used a crush sleeve eliminator. No longer have a crush sleeve, pinion preload is set by shims instead of a collapsible spacer. So just tighten down the pinion nut

Wish I didn't get drunk and fight my buddy that I was hoping to help me with this. I'm over me damn head. Damn it!! Easy taking the old axle off. But now I don't have a front axle so I can't even get it towed. The front is facing a wall. Lol I'm fuked.

Mine were in good shape, reused them. But I would just go with standard replacements if you need to change yours
