Complete gear and locker install! Today on Dirt Lifestyle, we will install a 5.38 ring and pinion into my Super Duty Dana 60. There are many ways to do this Job and in this video I will show you how I do it. We will be using a mix of professional grade tools as well as some cheaper alternatives. Installing gears and lockers doesn't require a college degree but a very clear understanding of the relationships between these parts is crucial. Do your research and compare the pros/cons of hiring a professional vs attempting to do this yourself. I'm not a pro and I wouldn't perform this install for customers due to the complexity of the job. Look at this video as a good starting point for your education on this subject but don't look at this as a set by step guide. A complete install guide is not my intention for this video. This video, like all of my videos is info-tainment. Proceed with caution. That said, I really hope you enjoy watching!
Stay creative and build cool stuff!

We done hundreds of regears at the shop and we did it exactly like you're doing. No need for over the top fancy tools and dummy bearings are a life saver. We had them for every axle out there you can think of.

My mechanic thanks you for this video, because I no longer feel the need to question the bill when I have him do it. LOL Seriously, that is how I mod my FJ Cruiser. I give it a go myself, then when something goes wrong I take it down to my mechanic and have him finish it. Like I started to install my own lift kit, stripped a nut. I knew how to get it out, etc, but decided I had better things to do. Took it down to him, and picked it up the next day. luckily my mechanic is also a good family friend, so no price gouging or backing his work. Sometimes I just want a drive my 4x4, and let someone else skin their knuckles.

Perfecto!! and the Yukon installation manual is the bible for installing r&p gears. Only thing i would suggest is wrapping a shop rag around the pinion yoke to act as an "brake" when your checking backlash and the pattern and rotate the gear through the marking paint 2-3 times in the same direction using only your hand on the ring and the shop rag looped around and twisted up on the yoke in your other hand, it makes a huge difference in the clarity of the pattern your trying to read. I.e. 2 to 3 revolutions through the paint to check drive side and 2-3 to check coast side, w/the shop rag on it. I think you did a great job explaining this topic and letting people know what tools ya need and what ya don't. Cool show👍thumbs!!

Ive done ring and pinion in everyone of my tail toys and I always swear I'll never do it again, however *knock on wood*, they've always held true and I literally just throw some shims and tighten everything with an impact lol. (Not street driven often or far, and typically not expensive parts)

Best video I have ever seen on YT. I got into an argument with an "expert" when I asked about checking backlash. He said "NO the dye will tell you that". The only thing I have a problem with here is a failure to mention the pinion markings. At least when I did it, the head, ring side, of the pinion was marked. It could be marked +5 or -5 or something else. This would tell you how much you should move the shims from front to rear or vice versa. Other than that, great video.

A nice little trick to lose the crowbar is to keep your box wrench on a ring bolt and then simply turn the pinion by hand....the gears will force it to walk right out.

Great clear video footage of the tedious process! There is only 2 other full videos on setting Dana 60s on RU-vid and a 3rd with new camera angles and tips is 100% awesome. An inner pinion setup bearing is technically not needed. I made one then realized I never removed it once. Just the inner setup race, and outer setup bearing is all for the pinion 😂 Agree on the puller. I bought one. But a splitter with a press and extra bearing or two you could do without it. I was a little shocked to see the glue being used at the end. Lube Locker gaskets are like $25 and make fluid replacement and diff cover removal so much easier. Glue was on mine previously and I had to beat the crap out of the cover with a chisel to remove it. Not worth risking a bent cover in my opinion.

I put an eaton e locker in my wife's JKU front d30. The carrier bearings are a different size than the o.e. carrier. I had to get creative to press the bearings on. I wish I would have thought about using the press to hold the carrier when I did the ring bolts. That would have made life easier. Oh well, live and learn. I need to get one of those inner axle seal installers now also. That thing looks slick.

Hey Nate that little ball in the side of the carrier is a "lead" seal because sadly humans can't drill 90° holes I in one shot yet. The air need to get inside to the locker actuator. Excellent video sir thanks.

When I regeared the rear D44 in my XJ, I was laying on my back holding the chunk in place and reaching for my deadblow when my hand slipped, the chunk rolled out and glanced off off of my chin. Luckily it just barely hit and caused a small cut and I remember thinking to myself, that's why they charge what they do! Next time the axle is coming out of the vehicle!

Best video with awesome editing and explanation. Wish this was made when I did a rear axle on a toyota two years ago. It took about 50 tries to get the beSt pattern on this nitro gears (4.88) that had run many K on a totaly worn out pinion bearing. The local dealer had made a fix with a new outer seal. 🙈🔨 We should have bought a new set og gears but no mire money as the car was just bought dome weeks ago second hand. Our problem was that the bad bearing had made uneven wear ob the different tooths so we had to much runout. But Im confident after 50 tries adleast that we made it as good as possible. Any tips on videos or good info on gear set up on used gears bit with new bearings eould be great as the pattern and everythibg is different when using the old gears that had been mating over years✌️ Love your channel and farout the best at all you do and very easy language in the terms of the way you speak.
