Dane Cook (Dane in Real Life & "the PICKLES") on TYSO -

"Ladies and gentleman, it is my pleasure to introduce this next comedian. He’s sold out countless clubs, theaters, and stadiums across the globe. Platinum comedy Album. Teen Choice Award. Blockbuster films… and now his biggest achievement to date-- A GUEST ON TYSO! Please make sure your cell phones are off and put your Su-Fi's in the air... for DANE COOK!"
The comedian, actor, and creator sits down for a cup of luke-warm tea while Rick enquires about him process, and how he’s able to kill at a set even when he’s physically or mentally drained. Dane recollects his origin story, growing up on stage with Dave Chapelle, moving to LA, and early career highlights.
The conversation somehow goes everywhere and nowhere all at once as the hyperactive duo try and stay the course, but inevitably veer off into goblins, pants on fire, and some country singing.
They discus why Dane didn’t come on the show earlier due to cancellations… and why rain isn’t always just rain… Dane passes on some insightful advice from his dad, the two discuss Steve Martin’s career, and why Dane has managed to pick himself out of any career rut.

It's really cool to think about how Rick, (who I get the impression over the last 2 years of watching TYSO) hasn't had a ton of traditional stand-up success, will go on to tour nationally, sell a fuck ton of tickets, and sell out rooms all over the country because of this show.

Rick doesn’t have quite as many high quality guests, but he makes up for it with better platforming.

I discovered you Rick when I came out of a drug and alcohol therapeutic community in 2020. Im in Perth Australia. I was in there for 8 months had been living in addiction for 20 years previous to this. Anyway we had our unhealthy behaviours broken down and we rebuilt on more solid foundation (extremely brief explanation) under the guidance of a team of counsellors (therapists) When I left I spoke this new assertive counsellor language that was weird and foreign to others. I felt like a misfit, but for new reasons. But anyway I came across your podcast and the way you spoke with certain guests was so refreshing. This style of honest open communication and the break down of thoughts feelings and behaviours. The self awareness and the understanding of whats your and what isnt. The conflict resolution. I always see this in episodes but some like this one I just really connect with and I strive to meet more people in life I can communicate like this with. Like you and Dane are. Also you and Ron Funches, Mark Normand and Dax Shephard. In Australia it is not very often you meet people that communicate like that. Ask your Misso she will probably confirm that. I love it TYSO and watch every week ♥

I aimed to be comment 888 and share this thought with Rick: Repeating a story on stage or in podcasts doesn’t make you a liar. Instead, it creates a sense of familiarity and connection for your audience. When listeners recognize a story, it brings comfort and reinforces our memories of you, which is why long-form podcasts are so incredible. They allow us to get to know you better over time. Keep up the fantastic work, Rick!

Great episode. Dane Cook's Retaliation album was the first standup CD I ever got and is where my interest in comedy started. I saw him do Vicious Circle live at the boston garden when I was in high school.

This was great Ricky! Do more of that… 😉 Honestly, this unmanicured lawn of a podcast was a fantastic VIP POV of one of the worlds greatest comics and a future great comic chopping up the bars and tones of the game that is comedy. 🎭

Loved Dane growing up. Forgot about him.. Now after seeing this organic raw thing that you have on TYSO.. instantly a fan again, like I never stopped watching.

I'm so glad I waited until 1:45.00 into the show to comment. I was gonna comment after the first 5 minutes but the cut-aways you and Dane did made me literally laugh out loud. TYSO is head and shoulders, and should be the example of what a podcast should be, above any other podcast. Heck, it's a show not just a pod. Love you and have loved Dane since the 90's. (Btw I was in the hospital with my 17 year old son, who has Down syndrome and autism, because he has covid pneumonia and I watched the first few minutes but stopped so I could watch the rest at home today) Thank you, Rick, for being you and all the laughs and thought provoking you have done and will do.

Best. Episode. Yet. I can't wait for Dane Cook 20.0! I grew up on Dane's comedy. The Honesty from both of them is awesome and fantastic!

I love Dane. It seems weird to say but I have nostalgia for him because I used to watch all his movies and stand up on comedy central when I was in my teens. Always seemed like a genuine cool guy too

I think the backlash against him was unfortunate, but he was solid gold for the timeframe when he blew up and then the tides kinda turned. It happens to everyone who reaches top tier success. I think they were just talking about it on 2 Bears 1 Cave. How Bert knew about DMB before they blew up and then they were everywhere and became the butt of the joke. They even lost their own fans because of it.

1:42:42 I’m getting whiplash from the conversational rollercoaster of funny bantering turning into very personal and wise revelations offered as profound advice before swinging into an absurdly silly exchange of sound effects and pantomimes- how can they pack so many unexpected twists and turns in, when earlier we couldn’t even share a bike going straight on a flat street ? What a wild ride.

I reallllly enjoyed this one.. such a massive episode Rick! The overall energy you two had while "sitting down, chatting & catchin up" kept me 1000% interested & immersed throughout the entire journey 💪🏻 I could certainly tell from a visual standpoint that you were able to take away some things from this one Rick & it was great to see [& hear]🙏🏼 I'm still unpacking things & plan to re-watch tomorrow.. I look forward to a possible Part 2 on this one in the future!!!

Just listened, honestly I rarely comment. I've only seen Dane Cook in movies and stand-up, never an interview, always loved his work. And I LOVED this conversation with you two, getting a behind the scenes glimpse of Dane Cook. Cannot wait for the next one. This is why I love podcasts like this, it makes me a bigger fan of people I'm already a fan of!

Dane is the man. My friend and I would listen to vicious circle in the car all the time. He nailed it.
