Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair - Mikan Tsumiki Free Time Events

Just the way Mikan acts is really depressing. She thinks Hajime is upset with her, so her first thought is to offer to take off her clothes or give him her money. She actually sounds cheerful about how her peers made her eat bugs, drew on her, threw darts at her, burned her with cigarettes, made her imitate animals, and abused the hell out of her. She even admits this is the first time she HASN'T endured any of that and the first time she's had someone to talk with about her feelings. How deprived of normal human contact is this poor woman? She needs all the hugs.

The more I see Mikan, the more I hate Junko. :)

Mikan's backstory *;_;*

Mikan is my second favorite female character only slightly beaten by Chiaki. After seeing Mikan's FTEs I can't help but think about some of Danganropa's messages about talent. Nagito believes that talent is something you're born with but that's not true for everyone. Chiaki knows that having talent means that you're forever bound by that talent which is an understandable view. However neither view says anything about the REASON for having a certain talent. Mikan shows us that just because you have a (good) talent doesn't mean that person has a well-intention reason for why they have it. In her third FTE Mikan explains to Hajime why she's so good at looking at people, because she was abused so much (both in school and at home) that she had to learn how to patch herself up. She realizes however that sick or injured people are weaker than her meaning they would need to depend on her for their survival so that's why she became a nurse. Mikan helps others who are weaker than her because she gets a sense of control (something she never usually has) of her surroundings or in another way to look at it she wants to be in a position where stockholm syndrome (a situation where a captive or imprisoned person becomes emotionally attached to someone who shows them affection while they're living in poor conditions) or a Florence Nightingale effect (when an injured/sick person falls in love with a nurse/doctor when they are being treated) can happen. They will have no choice but to pay attention to her and listen to her. So while her talent maybe helpful to others her intentions are a bit dark. This can be seen when Hajime describes letting Mikan find out he's injured or sick would be the end of him. However all of this goes back to her desire to not be ignored. Mikan has a severe lack of human affection given to her by the environment she's been in. To the point where in the final FTE she instead of being relieved is DISTRAUGHT at the fact that no one is treating her horribly and immediately thinks everyone doesn't care about her. You can almost tell that Hajime heart broke a little when realizing Mikan is not afraid of being hated but is TERRIFIED of no caring about her existance (which is even worse). Hajime while having a some self esteem issues is a good guy through and through. Hajime berates himself for not noticing that Mikan only wanted others to care about her something he could relate to. It's why Mikan's Dangan Island ending so touching and why chapter 3 is so despairful. Speaking of which, Mikan had the potential to become despair even before Junko got her. Her mental state is was already unstable (Dangan Island ending shows shades of this) all Junko needed to do was give her a little push really. Which again means that if no one came to help her like Hajime did she would've eventually became despair at some point. Now to finish this, Mikan tells Hajime in the end of her final FTE that he is the one that forgaved her. I like to believe that her version of this expression is different from when she reverts back to her despair side. We know that Junko is her "beloved" so forgiveness has a whole bunch of darker tones. For Hajime however I think it means that she believes Hajime is forgiving her for being the way she is (which is not her fault as Hajime has repeatedly pointed out) and thus sees her as a person.

Just imagining the amount of self-deprecation in a hypothetical conversation between Nagito and Mikan is overwhelming me.

You can't hate the person that killed Hiyoko. She saved the world.

One theory that's floating around about Mikan is that her habit of offering to strip and apologizing and begging not to be hit by someone ALL THE TIME is that she may have been sexually abused in the past, while the tripping may be what she does intentionally when she feels ignored and wants attention, it would make sense and it honestly makes me feel SO SORRY for her, I just wanna hug her! 😢

She's a weird one... But her smile is the most adorable thing I have seen in my life.

The thing with Mikan, I've found, is that as much as she seems merely a victim, there is definitely a darkness in her that goes beyond the despair disease. I feel like she has a lot of pent-up emotion that's just waiting to be released. Still love her, tho--

Mikan is growing, and that's what I love about these free time events. and more reasons why I ship Mikan and Hajime.

Everytime I see this girl, I feel compelled to give her a great hug. I've seen this kind of behavior before, but not like this. It's extremely depressing. The fact that she has been abused like that, and her below-than-average self esteem, make Mikan's life one of the worst possible ones I've ever seen or even imagined. I feel like the only thing that prevented her from collapsing is her talent. As a Medicine student myself, being able to help other people in this way makes you feel very good. But it's important to notice that Mikan's mental health was high enough to recover surprisingly good, considering her experiences (believe me, her change is above-than-average and she achieved it in a short period of time, I've been told about these recoveries, and not all of them are this good). She does have strenght, but being unable to use it anywhere made everyone, including her, to believe she was weak and useless. So, I feel like finding Hajime was the best thing that could happen to Mikan, because he correctly understood Mikan's issues. And Hajime is controlled by the player, so Mikan's recovery and improve was the result of our decisions.

I think Mikan is actually my favourite character out of the SDR2 cast, besides Nanami... I just want to hug her, no one deserves to be abused the way she was... *SPOILER ALERT* I hope that if the cast that went comatose ever woke up, Mikan would somehow be helped to be more self confident and assertive.

Mikan is my 3rd favourite character, because I just want to help her and give her a the biggest hug possible. The way she thinks isn't right, she needs someone (like Hajime) to help her change that way of thinking. The way she was raised and treated made her develop some kind of madness, a wrong perspective of society. So, without twisting the truth (how my opinion may seem to some Mikan-haters), all she needs is a change from her current masochistic self to the cute and sweet girl who truly cared for others she is on the inside.

spoiler!! i knew when i saw the victims were on case 3. As soon as i saw ibuki, the only person that could have done it was mikan but i didn't want to believe it. I really liked her even if nobody else did. I didn't want to believe it and i wanted to believe that the mechanic guy was the culprit but i was lying to myself. As i gathered the clues the game slowly revealed who the killer was but i still refused. Maybe i gained a little bit of hope during the trial but as that went on also i fell more into despair, slowly the evidences, one by one were pointing to mikan. Dangit i didnt want it, i dont want this. this game btw captures being in despair really really well if you just get into the story and care for the characters themselves.

Watching Hajime be so nice to Mikan just warms my heart so it just really sucks that she ends up getting executed

Did anyone else not notice the irony in Mikan's obsession with shots?

You know, despite how different their personalities are, Mikan and Hiyoko are remarkably similar in a lot of aspects. I kind of wish more people would be willing to recognise the two for the complicated characters that they are. People tend to just mindlessly hate Hiyoko and love Mikan uncritically, but I think that they're ignoring a lot of the nuance from both of them. Now obviously, Hiyoko's actions are not ok, but honestly Mikan isn't much better in some regards? Like becoming a doctor so that you can control people who are weak is...... Not good. Hiyoko and Mikan both have very similar issues, and at times similar unhealthy ways of going about dealing with them. I find them both to be very interesting characters, and I wish that both the dr writers and the fandom would do more with their characters. But yeah they both have a lot of issues and they both should get therapy.

I think Hiyoko constantly insults Mikhan because she thinks it’s all an act for attention. And to a degree she’s right, but I think she’s doing it out of paranoia rather than self indulgence. She definitely shows a lot of signs on being in an abusive relationship at one point in her life, being extremely submissive is a red flag for that. I can’t say this for certain because I haven’t been in one before, but the abuser probably manipulated her into thinking that everyone thinks she’s completely meaningless and that abuse is a good thing compared to that. The reality is that most people either don’t even know she exists because there’s already so many people in the world, or don’t know what she’s going through.

I dont understand why people hate her. She’s trying her best! She’s a precious baby! She basically got brainwashed by Junko, and she became crazy bc of the despair disease. She just needs a hug, I love her 🥺🥺🥺
