Nagito Komaeda Character Analysis made by a FrecklyFlamingo So I want to make this character analysis because a lot of people don't understand Nagito's character and judge his actions without knowing why he does them. THIS IS NOT AN ANALYSIS TO DEFEND HIS ACTIONS!! I'm only explaining them. This is going to be very long so buckle up cuz it's a long ride! 1. First Impression (Basic Information) Nagito Komaeda is the antagonist of the second game, that's what all the people are saying. In my opinion he is not entirely an antagonist. In the prologue he is the support character. In Chapter 1 he is both the support character and the antagonist. In Chapter 2 and 3 he is basically both helping and messing stuff up. In Chapter 4 he is very helpful but mean at the same time. And in Chapter 5 he is a full on antagonist. We all know that he has an obsession with hope and would do anything for hope to shine. Now I want to explain in detail his obsession. 2. "Hope is absolute good" (Hope obsession) Nagito views hope as absolute good, that's stated in his free time events (FTE), so whenever he says he wants to bring hope to people he means he wants the good for everyone, even if he has to do drastic things to get it. But why you ask? Because he learned the hard way that to overcome traumatic situations you can't loose hope. Hope is what motivates him. All his life all he could do is hope. And because of that he thinks that everyone needs to have hope to overcome bad times. But what happened to him to make him like this? Let's find out! 3. The tragic cycle (Nagito's past) To learn his past you must do his Free Time Events and basically read between the lines. The first thing we know is that Nagito suffers from a tragic cycle of good and bad luck. His first experience with it was when he was in elementary school. He and his parents were planing to go on a vacation or whatever it was and had to go by plane. Once they were in the airplane a person hijacked the plane. That is the bad luck. But then a meteorite fell and struck the hijacker preventing any further problems. That is good luck. But...the meteorite also hit his parents, killing them instantly. That is the bad luck. Then the good luck comes again and he gains his freedom and a massive inheritance. That's how he states it. He spoke about it so optimistic as if it wasn't a big deal but at the time, it must have been very traumatizing seeing your parents die right in front of you. I believe he said it with such a happy face to hide the pain he was feeling. But the thing about his parents is that they weren't even that great. In the first trial he says "Nobody has ever complimented my appearence before! Not even my own mother!". This probably means they were the typical rich parents that don't care about their child. This can explain the lack of love he feels and how low is his self esteem. He also had a dog which he really cared about but it sadly died. The reason I know this is because in Chapter 5 when Akane was done strangling him he said "Thanks Akane I got to see my dead dog again! I haven't seen him in ages!". I think seeing his dog again was a very sad moment. Anyway, the next thing we learn is that in middle school he got kidnapped by a serial killer. We don't know exactly what happened to him during that time or how long he was kidnapped for. I assume that he was probably starved for a longer period of time since he doesn't really eat much. He probably got used to starving since he might have been in more situations like this. That's why in Chapter 4 when everyone was starving, he didn't mind until later. And in the investigation when Monokuma came to bring them food, he doesn't even eat it right away like the others. Anyway, after that the serial killer stuffed him into a trash bag, probably since he was keeping him for ransom but he didn't have anyone alive that could pay it, he found a winning lottery ticket which brought him 300 million dollars. Again, the good and bad luck cycle hit him again. I believe that he didn't consider the money as good luck at the time since he couldn't get past that traumatic experience with money. I think he was tired of getting money all the time after something bad happened. Money can't bring his parents and dog back. Money can't bring back his happiness. After that, more years later of loneliness and more good and bad things happening to him, before entering Hope's Peak he was diagnosed with stage 3 malignant lymphoma and frontetemporal dementia. That must have broke him when he found out. He was given only a half a year to a year life expectancy. I can't imagine how he must have felt in that situation, especially since no one was there to comfort him. Right after that he was accepted into Hope's Peak Academy as the Ultimate Lucky Student. He said that he thinks that ballanced thing out a little but now the killing are occuring. He says "Once my life entered the final round, it quickly became a rollercoaster ride! But it's going to be all right...No matter the bad luck that happens, good luck always lies just beyond it. The reason I'm alive is because I always believe there's hope...no matter what.". This shows that even after those tragic situations and all of this pain and suffering, he still believes in hope. That's exactly what made him so obsessed with hope. And at the end he says how all he wants before death is someone to love him, that's all. Such a dangerous and scary person can be tamed just by some affection. That's what Nagito needs, but no one will give it to him. What makes some people hate him is the fact that at the end he says that it was all a lie just to make Hajime empathize with him but that's not true. Let me explain. (MORE IN THE REPLIES)
4. I'm scared of people caring for me (Fears and weaknesses) The reason he said he was lying is because he doesn't want Hajime to forgive him and try to help him. He doesn't want Hajime to get close to him since he knows that he will be affected by his luck cycle, just like his parents. He is scared that Hajime could get hurt or even die if he gets close. That's why he distances himself from the others and from Hajime even tho he wants to be friends with his classmates. That is shown in Danganronpa 2.5 that he wants to live a normal life and be friends with everyone. He was dreaming of Kazuichi and Fuyuhiko being his best friends THAT'S SO SWEET!! It shows that he cares about his classmates more than just their hope, as many people believe, but it all changed in Chapter 4. 5. I can't forgive this! Even tho it hurts (Finding out the truth) When we get to play as Nagito for a part of the investigation, after the whole Russian Roullete thing, Monokuma gives Nagito his reward for completing the Final Dead Room at the highest difficulty. It's a Future Foundations file and a Hope's Peak Academy one. There he finds out that Hajime is a reserve course student and that everyone except the traitor is Ultimate Despair. Imagine how you would feel if you found out that everyone you admired and idolized and the guy you LOVE were all Ultimate Despair, yourself included. He must have felt horrible finding that out. We don't get to see his reaction but I believe he cried his eyes out. After that he started being mean to Hajime and everyone else. Here is where people think that he didn't care about Hajime from the very beginning but that's not true. He was using the fact that he was a reserve course student as an excuse to be mean to him when in reality it was because he was Ultimate Despair. But even then he still cared about him, because he loved him. Proof of that is right before they enter Monokuma Rock he tells Hajime: "But I know you don't matter at all so why do I still care for you? You worship hope...I love hope. In some ways we are similar but maybe that difference is what's making me so emotional...". You are not able to really realize that in the english version and when you first play the game. In the japanese version it's different. It sounds like this "But I know you are someone with no particular talent so why are you still inside my heart? You must worship hope...and I love it. In some ways we are similar but maybe that chemistry is what's making me so emotional...". This alone just proves that even after finding out the cold hard truth, he still loves Hajime. Speaking of that... 6. I'm truly in love with the hope that sleeps inside you (Feelings for Hajime) Almost everyone knows that Nagito loves Hajime. Well right now I'm going to explain those feelings in much more detail. From the first part of the game we spend almost the whole time with Nagito and Hajime really appreciated their friendship. When Hajime starts saying how he doesn't remember his talent and stuff Nagito encourages him that he surely has a great talent. Well it all goes down hill when Nagito reveals his true nature. Hajime tries to distance himself from Nagito but even then, he still tries to understand him. Nagito even then still praises Hajime and tries to help him all the time, even tho Hajime doesn't see it. Like in the third trial when Nagito acussed Hajime of being the killer, in reality he was only backing up his alibi but Hajime didn't get it. He even said an important clue just so Hajime could be the one to prove it so he could get all the praise. Nagito didn't want the others to thank him, even tho he did all the work. Let's move on now. Nagito developed feelings for Hajime pretty quickly, since Hajime was his frist friend ever. Nagito felt like him and Hajime have a lot of things in common. He says how he felt from the beginning that Hajime didn't have a talent because he couldn't radiate the same aura coming from the others from Hajime. He says that he only felt the scent of a myserable bystender, just like him. That is what actually made him feel closer to him. He always felt like the outcast considering that he didn't have the same talent as everyone else. He always felt like that. But then he found someone else just like him, Hajime, who also felt like he couldn't fit in. That's exactly what made him feel closer to him and eventually, made him fall in love. At the end of his FTE he says "Please, don't forget...From the bottom of my heart, I'm truly in love with the hope that sleeps inside you...". In the english version, again, it doesn't seem as much but in the japanese version he says "Douka wasurenaide...Boku wa kimi wo...Kimi no naka ni nemuru kibou wo kokoro kara aishiteiru to." 1. At first he said "Douka wasurenaide..." but then he started his second phrase with "Boku wa kimi wo...". In the first phrase Nagito started his phrase with a direct object but when he picked up again, he switched to a possesive object (The japanese grammar is a bit complicated and very different from the english one, so it might be hard for you to understand) 2. The word he used for love here is "aishiteiru". Aishiteiru can be roughly translated to "(I) love (you)". However, it is an extremely strong word (a word that even married couples hesitate to use since it's so strong!). You dont just say "aishiteiru" to whoever you like unless you really, really love that person. You might consider "Oh but Nagito could love anyone as long as they have hope" but that is not true. When he says he loves the Ultimates or when he says he loves hope he uses the term "suki" which is used for saying you love a thing, you love your friends or you love you family, so it isn't as strong as aishiteiru. A more correct translation would be "Please don't forget that I love y- That I love the hope sleeping inside you...from the bottom of my heart..." NIS America butched a lot of the translations like the one I talked about in Chapter 4, the last line of his FTE which i just talked about and even Mikan's talk about her beloved. Even in Island Mode, even tho it's an alternate universe, he still has feelings for Hajime. Quote from Nagito's wikia page: "(...) I should also be noted that in the final Dangan Island event, Nagito had a hard time asking Hajime to be his friend, to which the latter agreed to". Quote from Hajime's wikia page: "(...) In the final Dangan Island event, when Nagito hesitantly asks for Hajime's friendship, Hajime was surprised but accepted without much consideration. The wording seemed to start as a confession, which caught Hajime by surprise". Nagito knows that he's a complicated person. Considering his past, it's only natural he doesn't want to hurt the person he came to know so much all those weeks. It's only natural he would develop romantic feelings for Hajime. And it was more heavily hinted in the japanese version of the game than the english one...In the english version the homosexual context isn't nearly as strong as in the japanese one. True, the localization was better in this one than the first game. However, they decided to skip the "serious" homosexual stuff (Nagito's "gayish" lines in Chapter 4 and his fifth FTE, Mikan's talk about her beloved aka Junko Enoshima) for some reason which is very sad. A lot of people say that Hajime hated Nagito but I'm going to debunk that. At first we can see that they were friends so when Nagito showed his true colors, he said he felt betrayed because he really thought he was a kind person. When he goes to bring Nagito food he is still in denial about how he feels towards him, now that he knows who he is and before he left he said this "I don't want to be tricked by you anymore!" so it's shows how he feels like he can't be friends anymore because he doesn't want to be betrayed, even tho deep down, he still wants to. When Nagito had the despair desease he was constantly worried about him and at one point he said why should he even be worried about a guy like him but he still goes to check up on him which is really sweet. When Nagito started being mean to him, he felt hurt but if he hated him he wouldn't have cared, but he did care what he thought of him. In Danganronpa 2.5 when Nagito wakes up, Hajime seems worried about him, if he hated him he wouldn't have even forgave him. And the last scene in it shows Hajime reaching for his hand, and Nagito takes it which was ADORABLE. This shows how Hajime never hated Nagito. Okay it's time for the next topic!
7. The master plan (Chapter 5 actions) We all know what happened in it already but I want to go in a little more detail. If you try to talk to Nagito when it's free time he says "I appreciate that you still want to talk to me after all I did but I'm busy at the moment.". This is already a hint to the fact that he is busy planning his own murder which is really sad. But the saddest thing is that he died the most horrible way. I don't mean that phisically tho. He always said that he doesn't want to die alone, that at least before death, someone could love him. But it didn't happen. That was true despair for him. I believe that while he was staying there waiting for the others to come, he wished that his plan would fail...but he knew that even for him, that was impossible. What sucks is that the others were shocked that he died but they didn't feel sad. They just wanted to get it over with so that they could finally go home, proving Nagito that no one loved or even cared for him. Tho Hajime said stuff about Nagito in his mind. He said "No matter how much I tried, I couldn't believe it...Because the victim was Nagito? Because his death was so abnormally cruel? No, it wasn't just that. There was something more to it than that... And whatever it was...it was stuck inside me.". This could indicate to him actually deep down caring about Nagito, but he just refused to believe it. I guess we will never know... 8. The loner life (School life, Despair Arc) In Despair Arc Nagito still doesn't have any friends. Everyone considers him a weirdo and a creep. This is one of the many reasons why I don't like the anime. In the game it's understandable why they wouldn't like him but in the anime he didn't do anything bad to them. He just talked a bit weird but that's just how Nagito is! They should have gotten used to it. Heck, he even exploded the gym for them! Speaking of which... The reason he did that was so the others don't have to take an exam since they were all depressed after Natsumi's murder (Fuyuhiko's little sister). He also ACCIDENTALY expeled Seiko, Ruruka and her boyfriend. He didn't want that to happen, it was all his luck's fault. When he was in the office with Chisa he explained to her why he did what he did but Chisa seemed confused. He says "I understand miss, don't pay attention to a word I say...it's just some weird talk (I don't know what he said there) of a no one!" and then Chisa slapped him. Nagito didn't really react, he just accepted it but when Chisa grabbed his face and said that he shouldn't call himself that and that she cares about him he was shocked. It was probably because he never heard anyone say that to him. I would have really liked if he started crying, just so he could let out all his emotions. Too bad. When he got suspended no one in his class cared, they even said that they hated him anyway. Hiyoko even puts a fricking flower on his desk!!(If you put a flower on a students desk it means that they are dead but if you put one while they are still alive you basically tell them to kill themselves). When he comes back everyone is dissapointed. It made me really mad. Chiaki was the only one that greeted him. When he goes with Chiaki to search for Mikan and they stumble upon Junko and he points a gun at her. It was very surprising the fact the he wanted to be the hero. Usually he makes the others be the heros but this time it was different. He wanted to finally be the one to create hope, he wanted to be the hero. He wanted to be accepted by the others. But of course it doesn't work out and Izuru comes and shoots him instead which...turns...him...on?? What the heck? Actually it makes sense, afterall it's Nagito, of course he would get turned on by the Utlimate Everything. Anyway Chiaki brings him back to the others and somehow they are still not entirely worried. Great. Anyway the other stuff happenes and right after Chiaki's execution they all start crying and smiling at the same time and Nagito says "how could you do this to Chiaki? She was our hope!" and more. I think he was completely devasted when that happened because he really respected Chiaki and her with Chisa were the only ones who cared for him. And guess what? They both die. I think Nagito blamed himself for it, since they were the ones closest to him, they both died. He probably thought it was all his luck's fault. We never know. 9. The despair life (Ultra Despai Girls role) Nagito is the only Ultimate Despair that appears in Ultra Despair Girls. He doesn't seem that different at first for most people but he has some different behavior. In here he works with Monaca to make Komaru the next Succesor. This time he believes that even someone normal can become hope, not just the talented like he always believed. When he is confronting Toko and Komaru and she cuts his thighs he doesn't really say anything. He doesn't show pain. It is kinda weird, but in character. After he is defeated he doesn't want to work with Monaca, leaving her alone. But then in the epilogue we see that he found Monaca and that he is carrying her. That means that he came back to her. I don't know why but maybe he just changed his mind. He offeres her that she should be the next Succesor and that he will raise her from now on. I don't know for how long that was exactly but I assume at least a year. Personally I found that moment really wholesome and I believe he took good care of her, even if he kept talking on and on about hope and despair which made Monaca yeet herself into space. Literally. He basically defeated despair just by saying what he's always saying. Good job Nagito! 10. A special dream (DR 2.5) So that the others could wake up, Hajime basically made his own AI to wake the others up from their dreams. Nagito dreams of being a normal guy with a little bit of an unlucky streak, nothing exterme. He sees himself as a side character as he is sometimes switching between being a blue person and being his normal self. He also dreams of being friends with Fuyuhiko and Kazuichi. This can explain how all he wants is a happy life with friends. He even included the Warriors Of Hope which treated him like an animal. He wanted them to have a happy life too. It shows how while he was their servant, he cared about them. He probably saw them as his siblings. It is really cute. He also sees Makoto as this Chad and ships Naezono lol. He also makes Sonia give a chance to Kazuichi which is really cute but we all know that would never happen in real life. When Kazuichi is supposed to meet with Sonia he gets scared and tries to run away but Fuyu and Nagito caught him before he had the chance. He says how he doesn't feel like he is good enough for her since she is a princess and he is just a guy who tinkers with machines. Nagito says "Souda, it's talent you desire, isn't it? Compared to a princess like Sonia, you're inconsequential. And that makes you anxious. I understand that feeling.". This could show how he feels when he is around the others, out of place. Kazuichi asks him what the ones without talent like them should do and Nagito responds "Find happiness.". That shows how he wants his life to be. No talent, no hope and no despair. He even said so in his FTE. That is the life he truly desires. The reason he says he doesn't like normal people is because he envies them. He is jelous that they can live such a simple but happy life and he can't. And that is perfectly normal. When he sees his friends die he goes to confront the World Destroyer aka Hajime's AI. He looks pissed at him, even angry. You never saw him with so much rage before but he still tries to keep his cool. He is genuinely mad a him for killing his friends. He says how he is going to defeat him but he kept failing. He collapsed the building and then shoot himself. He wakes up in the Neo World Program and has a conversation with Hajime's AI and he says "I can't believe I actually wanted a world without talent...That's just not who I am". I think he was lying about that since Hajime's AI said that the world he was dreaming was formed out of his biggest desires and he desires a normal life. After that he wakes up with Hajime next to him telling him to wake up. It looks similar to when Nagito woke up Hajime in DR2. At first Nagito calls him Izuru but then he says Hajime. He reaches out for his hand to help him get up while he still has the Junko hand. Even with that hand, Hajime holds it anyway. When Nagito is heading toward the boat Fuyuhiko and Kazuichi are waiting for him. Nagito hugs them both and says "At least it wasn't a bad dream". Then he goes in the boat with Hajime waiting and grabing his hand, this time being the robotic one. I don't know about you but for me that moment was super sweet. It shows how Hajime forgave him and how they become friends. 11. A happy ending (Hope Arc conclusion) In hope arc we can see how they become friends and Nagito learns how to have a balanced belief in hope that is not chaotic in any way and he learns to appreciate everyone in a normal way. He still keeps his talks and stuff because if he didn't he wouldn't be Nagito but it shows how he has grown from his past mistakes. He is ready to live a normal life with Hajime and everyone else. This is what I call character development. That is all I have! I hope I made some things clear! This took me 4 hours so I hope you like it! Nagito is my favorite character of all time and talking about him brings me the biggest joy! Bye now!

@Charlotte Osburn Yeah, after all Nagito's luck is pretty brutal when it's bad, even though his good luck is something quite extraordinary too.... Nagito's luck is something quite amazing and scary to witness I think

Why is no one talking about how hajime, in his head, says he’s never felt this feeling of happiness growing in his heart, after nagito asked to be friends with him?? He crearly has strong feelings for him 😫😫❤️
Now that I think about it… (Spoilers?) If we count some of the parts in the actual DR2 Killing Game, example: the scene when Hajime woke up and saw Nagito, or when they hang out and meet everyone together,… plus the Island Mode or an AU “If there was no killing game” (lol basically it’s still Island Mode 😀), since Nagito is the closest to Hajime, and vice versa, they would have become besties! Something even more tbh when they get out of the Neo world program! Also don’t even try to say sum like Chiaki is closer or this character and that character, when u think about it, 1st of all, Chiaki is actually ded, and the others, unless you play or watch their events in Island Mode then sure but these 2 have been the closest ever since they arrived on the island and the program! So…u guys get me?
I feel like if you make sense with the pieces you have you can make some kind of sense out of it. I always tried to not see his character specifically hat face value so I gave it some perspective and an open mind. And everything he does makes sense and comes with good intentions, he just goes about it the wrong way. It makes me really sad people hate him SO much without even considering what he has and what he’s been through :c

A lot of things could have been prevented if the DR2 cast wasn't so selfish and actually tried to understand him....instead of going against him why don't we try to make him realise he's not alone, that he has friends and all.....the ironic thing is that Nagito wanted to be sacrificed since the beginning....He tricked Teru into killing him so that the others can escape....but when he did that on chapter 5 he believed that's the best way of being a symbol of hope, defeating the bad guys.....but not because he hated them but becuase he thought by doing that he can finally be accepted by the others, he wanted to save them from themselves, "that's what the others would want me to do" he probably thought, that was the first time he by himself tried to be the hero and the good guy for once instead of being a steeping stone for the others. I can go on talkin' about him but it would be too long 😅😅😅
Alex Matejic BRO WHEN I TELL YOU THE DEPRESSION THAT HIT WHEN NO ONE CARED HE GOT SUSPENDED IN THE DESPAIR ARC 😭 And he has good intentions he really does he’s just misunderstood and goes about almost everything the wrong way. He legit says himself that his only dream is to be loved and not die alone. Hajime once asked him what he’d do if he didn’t have an ultimate and Nagito says he’d live an ordinary peaceful but happy life. Legit no one considered him a friend at one point except for Hajime when Nagito died in chapter 5. In conclusion. Someone love him PLEASE like his life is so depressing and no one understands him and often doesn’t wanna try. Even in the fandom it’s too easy to hate him, some of the fans never consider the details on why

i’m in love with him too. how i like to think about it is, it would be much more painful to see him with another female. right? so if i can’t have him (since he’s only fictional), then no other female can. that’s why komahina is a good thing!
Me and my crush (and best friend) both kinned Nagito (I kin Nagito and she kinned Hajime) and Hajime at the same time. It felt like everything was lining up for me to start bring more with her but she's really indecisive and kins a lot of people so she chose someone else to kin. 😧
