Our Triumph motorcycle powered dragster is almost ready to run! Today's episode is focused on SAFETY! We install a racing seat with a 5 point harness, a collapsible steering column, braces for the front wheels, a sweet dragster inspired roll cage, and two side pods for our radiator, battery, and oil cooler to mount. There's still lots to do, but our homemade dragster is getting close to running and driving!
Thanks for Watching!

my only complaint is that I feel the sides are way to large for the project i feel you could shorten them 3-5" and still have clearance and probably better airflow for the radiators!
@ttv8ra23
@ttv8ra23 Год назад
5” at the front and 3” at the back. And angle the front outer edge back towards the tire so it’s not so square on the front. And angle the top bars down. Could make it look waaaaaaay better.
@joeclutchless1944
@joeclutchless1944 Год назад
The side pods need to be angled at the front for aero. That will also protect the legs. A touch narrower would save weight while still containing everything.

Could also shorten up the front bars so it’s tapered in relation to the chassis as well. Still be heaps of room. Chop 5” off the front ones and 3” off the rear ones and angle them. Would look a lot better and be lighter.

The side pods shouldn’t be on the car at all. John just screwed up Ike and Charles’ hard work with that idiocy. John needs to stick with the editing because designing things isn’t his strong point. None of my dragsters have anything like that because it’s pointless.

i wouldnt be surprised if they shortened it or redesigned it slightly, everything was just tac'd in place and no plumbing was done. ike will have some opinions about it i bet. i agree they went a little overkill on the size and profile. there is some fat that could be easily trimmed off that design and its a cool concept.

John, I humbly suggest that you revisit the location of the collapsible steering rod. If you hit the wall at a steep angle, it might bend the rod if it is close to the front, negating the good it was supposed to do. If it collapses further back, there might be less of a chance of kinking the rod before it collapses... Just sharing my thoughts. I am not a builder of any kind. I just wanted to share that thought with you. Thank you for a great channel and for making it better by adding Charles a few years ago... He was EXACTLY what this channel needed! Best biz decision you ever made was hiring that kid!

Maybe you've got this still coming, but the protective cage over the driver needs to be aligned with the main frame triangulation to provide maximum protection. Particularly I note that the front legs should join to a triangulation node. As currently attached, in an roll-over event, the top rail will just bend and the cage fold forward. Also .. the side pods... why?? I suggest just put the radiators above the engine and keep the sides clean.

It is best to have the shoulder harnesses attached to the roll cage as close to level with the shoulders as possible(straight back), the belt should also not be hindered by the seat. Mounting it lower has the possibility of compressing ones spine in an accident and can cause some pretty nasty damage

if you have the seatbelts in the current position you're gonna compress your spine in the event of a crash, the rule in drag racing as far as i've heard is that they should be mounted level with or higher than your shoulders, so some cutting and welding of the seat may be required since it looks like the hole for the seatbelts is too low for Charles and Isaac. just a bit of concern from a scandinavian. i wish you good luck with the rest of the build and i'm looking forward to the result. cheers

Best thing to do is adding of the collapsible steering shaft! A buddy of mine ended up with a new mouth wearing a full faced helmet in a older Promod that was lengthened by someone who didn't install any sort of crumple zone in the steering shaft! Needless to say, during his first few certification runs and being pretty new to drag racing, his alcohol blown engine decided to stick wide open on the last run...... which was his suppose to be the last run before full certification. Welp he locks up the brakes and pulls the chutes, turns off the fuel pumps but never killed the mag and it just kept accelerating towards the sand pits at the end of the track in upstate NY. This was his fastest run ever and since! He somehow survived his ordeal with the steering wheel and shaft which broke his face, literally breaking off his brand new Simpson helmet around his head and putting the steering shaft through his throat. He was helicoptered out in critical condition and flown to Westchester trauma unit, somehow remaining awake throughout the trip. The amazing doctors and nurses were able to stabilize him and with the amazing talents and not knowing what he actually looked like beforehand, they were able to reconstruct his entire face, eye sockets, cheek bones and jaw were all pinned and screwed back together. The nose was the least of their concerns, but they were very good at matching the rebuild to his actual facial structure. Today he is thankful to be alive, but he no longer is messing around with drag racing personally, but he's always there to lend a hand and be there for others. I don't blame him one bit after that horrific event being a little gun shy about getting back on the horse! That was his one lucky chance, and I would feel the same way about getting back behind another 2K horsepower cars steering wheel again too!

I think the scoops can be much smaller and raised up to prevent rock catch points... and shoulder straps should be Level off your shoulder or Slightly Upward, Never Down off the shoulder since that can cause Spinal Compression. So setting it level for the tallest driver is the safest possibility. Your shoulder shouldn't be higher than the belt pass through holes on the seat for the same reason
@kyleewert5630

I hope you guys reconsider the size and weight of he side pods. Drag racing is all about power to weight ratio. A redesign of a smaller "scoop" using lighter weight materials would be very beneficial. Even designing it to add strength to the existing rail. Squares are not very strong.

First off, I love the channel. Been here since the beginning. I hate the side scoops though. Why not put all that stuff in front of the cockpit and combine the oil cooler with the radiator so the fan cools it as well? You're adding alot of unnecessary weight where it doesn't need to be. Like I said in front of the cockpit would be good for weight distribution as well

You want those shoulder harnesses to come straight out of the back of the seat without curving in most applications. That way it doesn't create any extra strain on the straps when under tension. That being said, y'all are absolutely KILLING this build. I'm SO excited to see it do some runs. I would have designed those side scoops completely 180 degrees to what you have now. Slanted in on the front, and wider in the back. That way it's more aerodynamic but the slant would still allow for the same amount of air to enter.

I don’t know guys, I think the radiator and oil cooler should be mounted up high and out of danger of flying objects. The roll cage would lend itself to a sturdy mounting area. And you really don’t need to worry about hose leakage, motorcycles don’t move as much coolant volume as autos or with as much pressure.
@ogrefreak5222

With the need for oil and water cooling, why not get a full-size, dual-purpose radiator with a built-in oil cooler. With the space behind the seat, you can put in a good fan setup and use those side vents (significantly downsized) to funnel air behind the seat. You can also close in the chamber behind the seat, meaning you eliminate the possibility of hot fluid spraying on the driver and you force the volume of air into the radiator. Just a thought. It does look like this will be pretty sweet.

Weight distribution is going to be ultra important in this thing going straight. Also tightening up the pods so that more air is forced through the oil cooler and radiator rather than around it would also be beneficial. I would be thonking along the linea of slimming down those pods and aiming airflow from L to R or vice-versa, that way you got radiator, engine then oil cooler all in one pass, you'd only need the width of one pod shared on either side. Gotta stay small to the air for any real speed, the small an area you present to the wind, the easier it is to cut through it.

I suggest keeping the fuel cell and battery in the nose for weight distribution and redesigning the side scoops. Widening the body around the cage will make it harder to enter and exit the rail. Shorten the scoops front to back then add a small step on the front top edge of them giving more aero like a jet intake at the same time giving better access to the cockpit (pun intended lol).

I would say gas tank on the oil cooler side and battery on radiator side. Nice weight distribution

A dirt bike master cylinder would be best when mounted to the steering wheel someway. Even though people may think that my idea wouldn’t work, without a doubt I know these boys could make it work.

I would use a hydraulic hand brake like a drift car. That way you can launch better. One foot gas one foot clutch and a hand on the brake. Kinda like a trans brake in drag racing. Also you may want to make sure the side pods are equally weighted.

I feel like the front to back bars should slope inward past the front pillars so it's a little more streamline I feel like it would catch a ton of drag because you got 2 big took boxes that stick out past the front wheels It's a cool idea tho can't wait to see it when it's done

just a thought , add two rails each side foward to act as a slide to protect against impact on the side pods

I like the idea of the side podsbut I think they should be more sleek and compact. Just my opinion. Keep up the good work guys!

It's looking great! Can't wait to see it evolve and get some use. I think the next project to tackle is to take a Prius engine, Transmission and electric motor and build yourselves a chassis from scratch for a replica "F1" car with KERS and a tuned engine. THAT would be a serious project :) Love the videos gents!!
